There are two variants of missiles for each size in EVE: high dps, short range type (rockets, HAMs), and heavy missiles. If you’re having trouble hitting frigates with missiles, rigor rigs and flare rigs can help with explosion radius, but Rage Heavy Assault Missiles with Hydraulic Bay Thruster rigs can be used. Rockets and Heavy Assaults have lower damage but better application, while Torpedoes and XL Torpedoes have better range.
Heavy missiles should not be very effective against frigs or destroyers, but they can hit cruisers now. Heavy Missile Frigates are weak against Strike Craft, particularly bombers. Concussion Missiles can destroy a ship, and when fully stocked, they take 450s or 7.5 minutes to completely empty, resulting in a total of 4500 damage sent.

There are two special cases to missile flight time.
Eve uses 1 second ticks. If the missile flight time is not an integer then the missile will fly for the integer number of seconds shown and has a chance to fly one more second. For example a missile with a flight time of 7.5 seconds has a 50% probability to fly for 7 seconds and a 50% probability to fly for 8 seconds.
How do defender missiles work in Eve?
- Defender missiles. When activated, Defender Launchers will scan local space for bombs within range. If a bomb is detected, the launcher will fire one Defender Missile to intercept and destroy it. How do decoy missiles work?
How it works. Operators send a formation of the MALD decoys into hostile airspace. The flexible, modular systems fly a preprogrammed mission that protects allied aircraft while confusing enemy integrated air defense systems. Each craft weighs less than 300 pounds and has a range of around 500 nautical miles.
MALD-J decoy. The MALD-J decoy is the jammer variant of the basic decoy and the first ever stand-in jammer to enter production. The unmanned system can operate alone or in pairs, and moves much closer to the victim radar than conventional electronic warfare when jamming electronics. One correction I have to make: Aircraft carriers traditionally used to have diesel engines. This, however, does not mean they would run on diesel fuel. In fact, the diesel engine is named after the Diesel cycle, as invented by Rudolf Diesel, and the fuel after the engine. Diesel engines can run on a variety of different fuels. Most marine diesel engines use heavy fuel oil, which is way cheaper than diesel.
Imagine a battleship created with today’s technology. They could have just one gun turret, but the accuracy would be insane. Could easily swat away smaller threats with modern missiles and point defense systems while just looking at something miles away and wiping it off the map. Modern fast attack craft (or missile boats) have much more firepower than older Frigates, and modern multirole corvettes have more firepower than older detroyers. This has made it difficult to compare different types of warships from different times. In the age of sail, a Frigate was a square rigged tall ship that had “full rig”, meaning all of her masts had square sails, (four-cornered sails perpendicular to the keel line of the ship). In other common types of tall ships, like barques, brigs and brigantines, the sternmost mast only carried a gaff-rigged mizzen and a few other fore-and-aft rigged sails (sails parallel to the keel line). A corvette was a smaller full-rigged ship.
Battleships weren’t really made obsolete by other ships so much as by the development of combat aircraft (connection with carriers here, of course, but the aircraft came first), whose use against ships was championed in the West by visionary pilot Billy Mitchell. The most striking demonstration of this was probably the easy destruction of some of the UK’s most advanced battleships in the Pacific by a handful of Imperial Japanese bombers during WW2. Neat FUN FACT: The USS Des Moines-class Heavy Cruisers built after WW2 in 1948 was the last gun-only Heavy Cruiser line the US Navy ever built carrying a terrifying armament of Anti-Aircraft weapons, 6 twin 127mm secondary battery and the most attractive part of the Des Moines, 9x 203mm cannons mounted in triple turrets that had autoloaders which, if I remember right, had a rate of fire of about 6 seconds per shell.
My last year of high school my shop teacher had his brother, who worked for Lockheed Martin, do a class presentation for us. Although, the presentation was supposed to be about how he was hand building a canoe in his recent retirement and the wood working skills he used, it turned to his line of work prior. he had a part in the development of littoral combat ships and he told us how when they launched the first one and it took off it’s wake washed all the civilian boats out of the way. Honestly a fascinating and fun story.
I remember hearing about a situation where as a ship was about to capsize, the ships captain ordered the entire crew to stand at the opposite side, turning it upright. That just goes to show how many people are in the ship, that them on their own can actually act as a counterweight to the ship itself
The term ‘cruiser’ comes from the Dutch term ‘kruiser’ meaning ‘crosser’. It was invented to bring the firepower of a battleship, but with much higher speeds to ‘cross’ enemy ships at sea, meaning to intercept them. About the frigates, there can be air defense frigates too. Most frigates have decent anti air capabilities. The littoral combat ships are discontinued. There are more categories. Logistic ships like tankers and tugs for example.
I have to say, I was thinking about doing a document trying to distinguish between ships like cruisers and destroyers. Torpedo boat ‘destoryers’ learning of the origin for the name makes me think of stellaris. A common tactic in that game is to build pretty much entire armadas of torpedo and missile corvettes, one of the only ways to defend against it is to have a screen of a few dozen destoyers covered head to toe with anti-torpedo and missile weapons. They wont win any fights but they’ll make sure the corvettes cant wipe half your fleet in the opening volley.

Classifications of ships differ from country to country, and from year to year. Even within Britain’s Royal Navy, for example, the rules for classifying a ship as one class or another changed every time a new set of admirals sat on the panel of advisors who determined such things, or the same guys might change their minds from one year to the next and re-write their rules. Another example is Britain’s Leander class frigate, which was classified as a “destroyer escort” when purchased by Australia.
In 1915, a cadet at the Japanese Naval Officer’s Academy by the name Isoruko Yamamoto said: The most important warship of the future will be a ship that carries airplanes. This man rose to the rank of Admiral and C-in-C of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and did great things with Naval Air Power. He died before he could see his enemy totally overwhelm Japan with Naval Air Power.
For those interested, allot of nations classify their ships as different classes based on different metrics (Shock, I know). What this means is the U.S Zumwalt class Destroyer is named a Destroyer for its intended purpose, while many other Navies in the world would refer to it as a Battleship since it displaces more water than many past Battleships. Europe now uses allot of what they call Frigates, but the U.S would call Destroyers. They displace Frigate amounts of Water for European classification, but in a direct example, the French Stealth Frigates carry as many missiles (or more for the upcoming new frigate) as the largest U.S Destroyers. This is why the Frigate section of the article may sound a bit confusing or conflicting.
From what I understand: Destroyer : Jack of all threat, meant to take on any threat and dominate, but lacking in facilities such as commanding, intelligence, electronic warfare, medical. Frigate : A cheaper Destroyer, used to patrol friendly or enemy shores ( think Coastguard ships ) and offering support to ground troops, launching assault vehicle, boats, helicopters etc. Cruiser : Well equipped to command Destroyers and operational theater with it’s facilities, to conduct better intelligence, electronic warfare, etc. Corvette: Bigger patrol boats, used to skirmish against ships near your shores and water.

In 1940, aircraft launched from the Royal Navy’s HMS Illustrious sank 1 Italian battleship and badly damaged 2 others in Taranto, Italy. After this momentous event, aircraft were used more and more in naval engaments and became key to the success of the US Navy’s campaign in the Pacific.

Cruisers were originally fast moving picket ships that had big enough guns to knockout smaller ships but didn’t have the same armor as battle ships. By having less armor and usually a few less big guns they could out run battle ships and report the enemy movement. These were originally called “battle cruisers”. By ww2 cruisers in the us navy were divided into “heavy” and “light” cruisers. Light cruisers were bigger higher endurance destroyers essentially. Heavy cruisers were little battle ships essentially. Cruisers are basically an obsolete classification as destroyers can do everything they can do. Frigates are baby destroyers. Corvettes are baby frigates.
Another one correction. Torpedo was invented by Croat Ivan Vukić or Ivan Lupis or Giovanni Luppis. He was from Rijeka and especially that part of Croatia because of close borders was targeted through history for Italian/Venetian invasions and because of their attempts for asimilation he had both names. Even now because its part of their culture in those parts our people have both Croatian and Latin names and most of them speaks both languages. But diversity of my people’s dialects and culture is for another article. The torpedo was the downfall of the Battleship, whether carried by torpedo boats, destroyers, submarines or aircraft. The modern successor to the motor torpedo boat is the Fast Attack Craft, armed with a 40 to 57 mm rapid fire cannon and a mix of torpedoes and missiles. More missiles and less torpedoes on more modern craft. Also, since the 1960s the only difference between cruisers, destroyers and frigates, are the size, and that the larger ones have a more comprehensive weapons suite (anti-air, anti-sub, anti-FAC).
A note on battleships: Not all were decommissioned for good after the Cold War. In the US, 3 Iowa class battleships (Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri) were actually RECOMMISSIONED from 1986 to 1992 and used in every major war since. The Missouri was stricken in 1992 and the Iowa and Wisconsin are still kept battle ready tho not in active use. These ships were the original and remaining WWII battleships and they underwent many reconfigurations over 50 years.
Looking over these, some of them can apply to Sci Fi space craft as well. Starfighters: You know what they’re for. Corvette, small ship that is agile and used for ant fighter duty or harassing enemy forces, small size and speed make great for running blockades or hit an run ops. Transport: little weaponry, focused more on carrying troops and supplies. Frigate: decently sized ships often used to escort and support Cruisers. Cruiser: Backbone ship of the Navy, general purpose, often escorted by Frigates. Destroyer: Ship with little hanger space but very heavy weaponry, meant to get in there and let loose offensively at the enemy. Dreadnought: Large very rare and expensive ships but are extremely powerful, often used if a necessary battle is not going well, or leading the attack or the flagship of someone important. Can often take on several enemy ships at once.

The lines between destroyer and frigate are blurring right now since their size and roles are getting similar, that’s why I often confused between those two. The only difference I get is: frigates are (slightly) lighter than destroyers. It’s even funnier how some countries like the Netherlands, Germany, or France classified their ships as “frigates”, although internationally it should be classified as destroyers.
I literally work on and have helped build the LCS’s from 3 to what will be the last of its kind 31.. they had a very badass concept, but definitely fell short of their conceptual potential…. But we allegedly are going to be tryin to contract out for new naval frigates.. sounds great and all but it being a new design, and being a bigger project then the LCS program it should be interesting working out the initial kinks, as the first few are always basically prototypes.. it’s cool working on the US Navy’s vessels.. but it’s also sad to say that my shipyard in particular is one of the few shipyards that builds these tax funded technologically advanced and very pricey Navy vessels, and is also (no exaggeration) THE lowest paying shipyard in the country per trade skill… not tryin to make this sound like a sob story, but it is no doubt pathetic that a company that has the power to directly affect the quality of the equipment our armed forces uses and actually LIVES in.. doesn’t care about the quality of the products they provide for the support for our own national security… simply by screwing over the hands on working force via pay, benefits, PETTY infractions and mutual respect, it undermines incentive and ambition to give a top notch quality product day in and out (some folks still take pride in what they do as they are just prideful people, but a fair amount of people also hate their lives because the company definitely abuses its laboring force).. it’s supposed to be a team effort but in reality the yard ends up being a corner cut scapegoat type environment, where management and engineers from the company are far more concerned about bonuses(for management only of course) via pushing unrealistic schedules.
The latest ships are a bit different. Size doesn’t matter so much. Sweden has a corvette that can do anti ship, anti air, and anti sub. Canada has a frigate that is 10,000 tons which puts it into the light cruiser size. Because of VLS or vertical launch systems we can stick a lot of weapons into a smaller hull. New missile launch systems are also designed to take a variety of missile types. The same launcher can do anti-air, anti ship, anti sub etc.
Yea, about the LCS… The modular thing turned out to be impractical, the Freedom class turned out so terrible that they are going to be decommissioned next year, essentially without ever seeing service, and the Independence class is experiencing a hull cracking which is due to a structural design flaw. It’s a failure of Mk. 14 torpedo proportions…

The power of the US naval arsenal is absolutely terrifying. And on top of this article, the new American Ford class carriers are in service with a sizable capability and technological improvement. The power of the US military that is publicly known is mind blowing, imagine the stuff we dont know about. Im convinced that if the US military was fully unleashed, theres no other country that would even stand a chance.
There is talk within the navy to bring back Battleships (Dreadnaughts) due to how much electronics are now used on ships for missiles. Modern ships can be disabled through cyber attacks, jamming, etc… so using old, reliable manual guns would allow the Navy to still have reliable firepower. The biggest issue with guns currently is their range, but there has been testing to increase the range. If the technology becomes operable we could see a return of the Battleship
