While cruising, mobile phones can be used on cruise ships. Most cellular providers ensure their service is available at sea, and passengers can register as many devices as needed for use onboard with the 250 free minutes offered under the older Free At Seas promo plan choices. The package allows unlimited calls, voicemail, and messaging, including group chat, to other guests onboard using the app.
However, it is not always possible to use a cellphone on a cruise without incurring outrageous roaming charges. Norwegian Cruise Line guests can make and receive calls, send and receive text messages, read emails, and surf the web on their own cell phones and mobile devices. Cellphones work by sending radio signals to a cell phone tower, which then sends them along to the recipient of the call or text. Understanding how cellular communication works on cruise ships, including satellite and ship-based systems, helps navigate the limitations and costs associated with using a cellphone on a cruise.
Norwegian Cruise Line offers popular Free at Sea options that allow passengers to get internet access. However, kids’ cell phones should be confiscated for the duration of the cruise. Most cruise ships have their own cell service, and travelers can connect to Wi-Fi facilities available onboard or use their cellular data on cruise ships.
In port, passengers can connect to local WiFi facilities.

Can I text with my phone on a cruise ship?
WMS offers an advanced roaming network onboard cruise ships allowing you to use your phone just like you do at home. Service for voice calls, texting (SMS) and data is available onboard while the ship is at sea. Once the WMS network is switched on, while roaming on our cruise ships, you will see a distinct display on your handset that differs from your home carrier. Depending on the make and model of your phone, the handset will read Nor 18, cellular@sea or 901 18.
As a reminder, international roaming charges apply and will be billed by your home carrier and not by WMS.
Due to regulations, the WMSatSea network only works when the ship is at sea at least 12 nautical miles from shore (2 nautical miles in the European Union). When the ship is sailing on international waters, you will be able to use the WMS network for incoming and outgoing calls, SMS, and Data services (email and web surfing). Once in port, you can connect to local roaming networks as permitted by your home carrier.

Will my cell phone work on ncl?
Q – Can I use my wireless device onboard? A – Yes, you may use your personal or company issued wireless device while onboard. Wireless internet is available throughout NCL’s entire fleet. Simply open your settings and connect to the ships’ Wi-Fi. You will be directed to our login page once your internet browser is opened, but if not, please visit loginnow.com. Use the Logout button to save your minutes if you have a minute plan. You can return to this window at any time by visiting loginnow.com in your browser. For unlimited plans, logging out is not necessary. If you are planning to utilise VPN access while onboard, be sure to discuss your VPN limitations with your company’s IT department if you are planning to work while sailing. We are not able to change your settings onboard.
Q – Is the speed of my connection the same as on land?A – No, the data for onboard connection is transmitted via a slower wireless signal to satellites orbiting the earth approximately 22,000 miles from the earth’s surface and then bounce back down to the land-based exchange. At home, your data is sent through a fast cable connection to your local exchange, just around the corner from your house. Therefore, internet access onboard is significantly slower than high-speed connections normally experienced on land. We are in the process of updating our fleet with Starlink, the fastest internet at sea and are constantly working on finding ways to improve your internet experience onboard.
Q – Can I access video streaming and conferencing onboard?A – Yes, you access streaming with our Premium Wi-Fi plans.

Really, just turn your phone off unless you’re using it to take photos or access the ship’s WiFi.
I often see passengers eat all three meals at the buffet every day. I know some people just really love the self-serve option, but it surprises me how many guests have no idea what’s included with their trip.
Can I use Whatsapp free on a cruise ship?
Guest Snaxmuppet. Not unless you have an internet package or one of the Plus or Premier packages. To use Whatsapp you will need access to the internet.
That is an incomplete statement and requires more detail to be accurate.
You can use the ship’s WiFi Intranet for all sorts of free local access on the ship. The Medallion App for instance uses the free WiFi to order room service, order a drink, see the daily schedule, locate companions, use Crew Chat and so on.
To access the Internet via the ship’s WiFi, you must pay. What I was originally saying is that there have been instances of WhatsApp and iPhone iMessages working when only connected to the ship’s free Intranet as there has been a “port” or “portal” in the Intranet allowing these messages onto the Internet. This has been true in the past and may still work now but haven’t tested it lately.
