Do Cell Phones Work On Disney Cruise Ships?

Disney Cruise Line offers Cellular at Sea, a convenient cruise mobile phone service available in staterooms and public spaces aboard the ship. This service allows guests to direct dial, receive phone calls, or text anywhere in the world right from their stateroom. Ship-to-shore rates apply and will be posted in your cellular provider’s account. Some cruise lines offer packages that allow guests to use their cell phones onboard, such as Disney Cruise Line’s Cellular at Sea program.

However, it is not always possible to use a cellphone on a Disney cruise without incurring outrageous roaming charges. The best way to use your smartphone at sea without it is through the Cellular at Sea program, which is available in staterooms and public spaces aboard the ship. If you know you will be making calls on your scheduled sea day and would like to use Wi-Fi instead of Cellular at Sea, you can purchase packages.

Disney Cruise Line, through an agreement with Wireless Maritime Services (WMS), provides an advanced cellular network onboard Disney ships. However, your land-based international calling plan will not work while you are at sea. To be fully accessible via phone while at sea, you can use the Wave phone, which allows cruisers to call any shipboard phone, stateroom phone, or other Wave phone. The phones also work on Disney’s private island Castaway Cay.

In summary, Disney Cruise Line offers Cellular at Sea, a convenient cruise mobile phone service available in staterooms and public spaces aboard the ship. However, it is important to note that your land-based international calling plan will not work while at sea.

What happens if you don’t put your phone on airplane mode on a cruise?

Make sure to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges. Cellular rates at sea can sneak up on you, and you can easily rack up a $500 roaming bill.

Even if you’re not actively on your phone, most are still using data, so make sure to put yours on airplane mode to avoid roaming charges.

Really, just turn your phone off unless you’re using it to take photos or access the ship’s WiFi.

I often see passengers eat all three meals at the buffet every day. I know some people just really love the self-serve option, but it surprises me how many guests have no idea what’s included with their trip.

Can you text on a Disney Cruise?

First things first: Before you set sail, download theDisney Cruise Line Navigator App. Once you are onboard, you canconnect to Wi-Fiand unlock all the functionality designed to make your cruise a breeze.

  • The Navigator app has a chat function for you to message fellow shipmates. This is a great tool to plan meet-ups, see where everyone else is, and have someone go ahead and order a drink for you while you are on your way to meet them.
  • Internet packages are available for purchase. There are a few options based on what you will need. Once you are on the ship, open the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and select the “Connect to Internet” tile. This will open a separate browser for you to view internet plans and purchase internet access. These packages will support phone calls to four-hour video conference calls (which I can sadly share from my own experience).
  • Disney Cruise Line has access to Connect at Sea. The rates for this are determined by your cell phone carrier. Some carriers offer special plans you can purchase to use on your cruise. If this is the route you take, I suggest checking with your carrier about rates. If I happen to leave my phone in cellular mode and the ship gets far from shore, my phone lights up with caution messages from my carrier letting me know to switch to Wi-Fi to avoidCellular at Sea charges.

Just a tip: To limit extraneous data usage, set your phone to Airplane Mode and then turn on Wi-Fi.

Speaking of cruising and calls, did you know you can request a character call before your cruise? It is a lot of fun to have Mickey Mouse give you a ring and share his excitement to welcome you on board!

Does WhatsApp work on a Disney Cruise?

Once you reach the terminal and connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi, the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app becomes your guide to all the onboard fun. Take advantage of the handy chat feature to stay connected with your travel party. The app is free to use, and if you have an iPhone, you can send and receive iMessages while onboard. You just won’t be able to send or receive any pictures or videos. Additionally, you should be able to use WhatsApp for text messaging as well.

There are also several internet packages you can purchase to check your email, surf the web, post pictures on social media, or even stream your favorite music platforms. On my last sailing aboard the Disney Wish, I had no problem with the “Stay Connected” plan to visit and post on social media sites. If you want to check your email and surf the web, I suggest the “Basic Surf” plan. I find that this plan is faster loading pictures, too. There’s also a “Premium Surf” package for streaming video. Check the app for the latest cost and information.

I hope you discover the perfect option that allows you to share your magical moments with your loved ones back on land. Safe travels as you pack and prepare for your voyage aboard the Disney Magic.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.
