Flying clubs are a great way to save money, enjoy increased access to aircraft, and spend time with friends and family. They provide access to an aircraft at a lower cost than individual ownership and offer more training and travel options. Pilot proficiency is also a key factor in joining a flying club.
Flying clubs can operate experimental amateur-built (E-AB) aircraft, but the core restrictions found in the operating limitations on E-AB clubs may make it difficult for members to afford an aircraft. The Flying Clubs Initiative promotes three aspects of flying clubs: access, flexibility, and networking.
A flying club is typically a group of pilots and aviation enthusiasts that run an aircraft or a number of aircraft as a non-profit, members-only club. By pooling membership fees, the club can offer more access to better planes and less daily minimums. Many aviation clubs own or have access to aircraft that members can use, which can be particularly advantageous for those needing more flying hours or new pilots looking to fly light aircraft or microlights.
EAA Chapters cannot operate aircraft, but they can build/restore aircraft or take donations of aircraft, but these assets must be transferred to a flying club. A flying club is a non-profit organization that provides aircraft rental for flight instructors, student pilots, and rated pilots. Members share equally the tangible assets of the airplane, and private jet club memberships offer individuals and businesses exclusive access to the world of luxury air travel.

What are the benefits of a flying club?
Flying clubs provide the benefits of aircraft ownership without the hassles and responsibilities associated with maintenance and upkeep. Members pay a membership fee, monthly dues, and hourly flying rates to use the club’s airplane(s). Pooling money together is a cost-efficient way to cover aircraft maintenance, fuel, insurance, hangar storage, and more. Many aviation companies have clubs for employees, such as the Hartzell Flying Club, which offers discounts on pilot training for Hartzell Propeller employees.
Flying clubs come in various sizes, from smaller clubs with one aircraft to larger ones with a fleet of different aircraft types. Gaining experience in a variety of aircraft types is invaluable, making pilots safer and more well-rounded. Joining a flying club with a diverse fleet can help narrow down options and find the right fit for your lifestyle, goals, and budget.

Aircraft Spruce, a Strategic Partner since 2012, sponsors programs that provide hands-on knowledge and DIY spirit to AOPA members, ensuring a comprehensive experience for pilots and aircraft owners.

Can a private pilot act as a PIC?
The pilot in command (PIC) is responsible for the safe operation of a flight, as per Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). A pilot must have a current medical certificate, all required endorsements, ratings, and recency of experience for the type of aircraft and flight conditions. Sport pilots can act as PIC with a valid and current driver’s license in lieu of the FAA medical.
The PIC may allow anyone, including a non-pilot, a pilot who may not legally act as PIC, or another fully qualified pilot, to fly the airplane or be the sole manipulator of the controls during the flight. The PIC is not required to sit in the left pilot seat.
A pilot may log PIC time when they are the sole occupant of the aircraft, are the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated or has privileges, or are acting as PIC where more than one pilot is required. An airline transport pilot may log PIC time when acting as PIC of an operation requiring an ATP certificate. An authorized instructor may log PIC time while acting as an authorized instructor in flight. A student pilot may log PIC time only when they are the sole occupant of the aircraft while training for a pilot certificate and having a current solo flight endorsement.
Can I fly my friends plane?
In the United States, a pilot may permit another individual to operate their aircraft with the owner’s consent, provided that the pilot is not engaged in a remunerated flight and maintains control of the aircraft at all times, thereby allowing the passenger to utilize the alternative set of controls.
How much does it cost to be in a flight club?
The typical fee for joining a flying club is a one-time initial payment between $1, 000 and $2, 000, which may be refunded upon departure. The monthly fees may vary considerably, with a range of $100 to $300. In addition to the economic benefits, flying clubs also facilitate the formation of a sense of camaraderie among members, who are typically pilots who enjoy sharing stories with fellow enthusiasts. The camaraderie among members is a crucial aspect of the club’s membership.
How do flight clubs work?
Flying clubs are non-equity organizations that lease or own aircraft, with members paying dues to the club. They do not have a financial right to the aircraft and have lower buy-in costs for new members. Lease-based non-equity clubs have less control over aircraft management, maintenance, and upgrades. Insurance rates are less favorable for non-equity clubs, and financing is more challenging for startups. To form a flying club, founding members may purchase the aircraft and sell shares to members.
The club can also purchase the aircraft on a long-term loan through monthly/annual club dues, and once the loan is paid off, the club owns the aircraft. To become recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt “social club” under 501(c), the club must file for incorporation within their state.
Can pilots let passengers fly?
Private pilots can carry passengers, but not for hire. They can split flight costs with friends and family, using the term “pro-rata share”. The FAA uses this to determine the cost of the flight, which can include rental fees, fuel, and other associated costs. Pilots often learn to fly in two-seat aircraft, which limit the number of passengers they can carry. Private pilots can pay for their part of the flight, with the FAA stating that each person must pay for their part of the flight.
Is it fun to be an airline pilot?
Being a pilot offers a rewarding career with a wide range of opportunities, including solo flights, landings, and overcoming challenges. Pilots can also maintain a work-life balance by leaving their work on the plane, as they don’t have to take it home after finishing their day. This allows them to focus on their passions and enjoy the satisfaction of flying. A video on starting an airline pilot career can provide more reasons to consider this career. Overall, being a pilot offers a fulfilling and rewarding career.

You may carry dry ice onboard but it can’t be over 5.5 lbs but it depends on what cooler you carry it in . It has to be vented and properly labeled. Styrofoam is what most airlines allow dry ice to be carried in. You do not have to get prior permissions however you do need a label as I previously mentioned.
5:41 Dry ice is not flammable it is solid carbon dioxide. If sealed in a container however it can explode that container from pressure created by expanding CO2 gas created at the dry ice melts also too much CO2 can cause asphyxiation. I would love to see burning dry ice that is not dry ice doused in a flammable liquid.
