Do cruise ships stop in Thailand?

Most cruise ships call on the port of Laem Chabang on the Gulf of Thailand, which is two hours south of Bangkok, the nation’s capital, though smaller ships often dock at Klong Toey on the Chao Phraya River, right on the outskirts of the big city.

Known as the Venice of the East, due to the many canals slicing through the city, Bangkok lies at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River and has been wowing tourists with its exotic temples, lavish palaces and teeming markets for decades.

If your cruise is embarking from Laem Chabang, you’ll want to fly into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and explore the city for several days before joining your ship. If you’re merely calling upon Laem Chabang, your best bet is to consider shore excursions to Bangkok, although there are a few spots near Laem Chabang like the beach resort of Pattaya or the Jack Nicklaus-designed Laem Chabang International Country Club golf course that could be explored by those who have visited Bangkok extensively in the past and don’t wish to make the two-hour trip north. Plan your trip to Bangkok with our upcoming Thailand cruise itineraries.

Can you do a cruise around Thailand?

Thailand’s beautiful coastline lends itself to cruising, but this is not the only area where you can take to the water to see the country from a different perspective. River journeys out of Bangkok are the perfect remedy to a busy few days in the capital, or you can head west to the River Kwai for a historical insight into Thailand during World War II.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand from the 14th to 18th century until it was razed by the Burmese. The site lies some 80 km (50 miles) north of Bangkok and can be visited by road, but a boat journey along the Chao Phraya River is a much more relaxed method of travel. After a few days whizzing around the busy streets and bustling markets of the city, it comes as a welcome change.

Life along the river is very traditional. Teak homes dot the shoreline and children splash in the water as you pass, while local fishermen trawl up and down, selling their catch from the boat.

  • I’m Thai. 1,000 USD is worth 3-4 months worth of full salary of most people here. It’s annoys me to no ends whenever a foreigner from USA or developed European countries come here here and complains about how “bad and corrupted” their countries or governments are. While they can just work like 2 months in their country then fly here and live like a king for 10 months. You guys got an “Easy Mode” countries. Please don’t take in for granted. It’s those guys in Ukraine or Afghanistan that got a “Hard Mode”.

  • Thank you for this!!! Unfortunately, not all of us were financially literate early. I was 35 when I finally educated myself and started taking steps. I went from $176,000 in debt with zero savings or retirement to now, 9 years later, fully debt-free and over $100,000 net worth. I know that doesn’t SOUND like a lot, but I’m incredibly proud of it. Now I’m fast-tracking my wealth building (investing $40,000 annually) and don’t owe a dime to anyone. It’s a good feeling!

  • The best way to find that balance between saving and living is by investing. This way you get to have your saving intact and then live comfortably off the revenue coming in from your investments. Financial freedom is possible, you just need to know what to do and when to do it. I am a living testimony.

  • First time perusal I thought you were going to spend $1000 on your trip… or $1000 a day. Not how much you paid for your Hotel. Lol. Also idk if you clarified well what the $1000 was for but I figured it out in the middle of the article.. good article though. Love the editing and music. I feel like it sounds like I was giving you a hard time but you earned a subscription!

  • VERY ENGAGING FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END!!! DESPITE THE DIP IN FOREX AND CRYPTO, I STILL THANK YOU FOR THE LEAVE-HEADED FINANCIAL ADVICE. I STARTED FOREX AND CRYPTO INVESTMENT WITH $4,345 AND SINCE FOLLOWING YOU FOR FEW WEEKS NOW, I’VE GOTTEN $18,539 IN MY PORTFOLIO . THANKS SO MUCH MRS ETHEL ARTHUR??

  • Hmmm Airfares to Phuket from the US are around $2K to $3K, usually closer to $3K if you fly direct. Lodging is typically $100 plus per night. There are places cheaper, but you get what you pay for. There are even places where it’s $22K a night, no joke. Otherwise, stuff is cheap. In short, if you plan a trip to Phuket plan on $2K per person for flights (it’s cheaper to go through Bangkok) and at least $150 a night for a junior suite. It does depend on when you go with summer prices significantly lower but then it’s hot as all get out there.

  • lol i spend 500$ my friend spend only 333$ 1 year ago just like in their vid everythings so cheap. a lot of company/business are really struggling mostly business that rely on traveller are offer the best quality/grade for customer. i only spend like 500$ and got better than they do(1 year ago on Apr 2020) i rent private house(2bed room,1kitcher, mini pool) they even offer me more than that. also 2-3 year ago i spend 200$? not sure and got the whole resort. yeah whole resort 15 of us party like hell no one there just us. all staff so happy that we went there. they though no one came in the covid19 time like that.

  • I see all these couples travelling around hoping that the articles will keep paying for it. Not sure what is in store for the next generation if cracks start to show in the monetization model, healthcare, retirement, etc, but I hope they have a backup plan. Call me crazy but I persuaded both my daughters to go to college, one for forensic science, the other for nursing. This is entertaining for awhile, just hope it isnt a bubble.

  • Well I have never seen anyone put that very mild sweet chili on pad thai, but each to his own. That is typically for stuff like stuffed omelette. If you want to try some actual hot sauce, which isnt very hot, try Siracha hot sauce. And how much did you guys pay for that room? $1000?!?!? You got taken my friends lol. You can rent a whole villa for a month for that money! And I should know, Ive done real estate there for years.

  • Really great to see that elephant sanctuary. I think I would forego the $1000 dollar a night hotel stay, and just donate the hotel difference to the sanctuary. That hotel seemed really out of whack. It wasn’t even on the beach, you had to take a 5 minute golf cart just to get there…and it was small. You can get a lot better at marquee first world countries for $1000.

  • If i had only 1000 dollars which i dont and not lucky as you, i wouldnt book for sure luxurious hotels and show people this kind of life of narcisism, but i would help communities, do charities, help refugees, associations and help people that for sure in thailand are more poor than westerners. I do already with little money, imagine with 1000 dollars how many people you can help instead of booking a room with the pool on the beach. So what?

  • Hey Brett, love your content. Here’s a question I have asked a few travellers before, do you need a motorbike licence to hire & ride in Thailand? I have been twice & only needed to supply my international Driver Licence, but if it is a legal requirement I would prefer to obtain one as I’m planning many future trips. Living in Australia it’s a heavy task to obtain a bike licence so if one can be obtained in Thailand that would be cool. Thanks for reading hope to hear back from you. ENJOY YOU TRAVELS 🙂
