How far underwater do you go when snorkeling?

The average snorkeler can swim down 3-4 meters (12-15 feet). Experienced snorkelers may reach 7 meters (25 feet). By comparison, experienced divers can explore down to 40 meters (130 feet).

Both scuba diving and snorkeling are excellent activities for anyone who enjoys seeing marine life in its natural environment. The main difference between snorkeling and scuba diving is the air supply. Breathing from a scuba tank allows you to stay underwater longer and dive deeper, but it requires additional training.

If you enjoy snorkeling and are curious about scuba diving, read on! Even if you don’t like snorkeling, you should still keep reading. You don’t have to like one to enjoy the other.

Difference #1: Air Supply. Scuba divers carry tanks on their backs (or alongside their bodies) and draw air from the tank via a mouthpiece attached to a sturdy hose. Snorkelers, by contrast, breathe air from the surface through a tube.

Snorkeling. Most of the kayak and dive outfitters in La Paz handle organized snorkeling excursions as well. The most popular snorkeling trip in the region takes visitors out to Isla Espíritu Santo where the highlight is snorkeling with the sea lions at Los Islotes. The tour outfitters will provide snorkeling gear, the park entrance fee, lunch, and beverages. In recent years, since the whale sharks have been more prevalent around La Paz, snorkeling with the whale sharks has become a popular organized tour as well. Those who prefer to snorkel on their own can drive to the beaches along the Pichilingue Peninsula where you can snorkel from the beach. You should bring your own snorkel equipment or rent it in town before heading out to the beaches.

Sportfishing. The best fishing around La Paz takes places May through November. Anglers will enjoy catching wahoo, dorado, tuna, marlin, and world-record roosterfish. The best and most-consistent fishing is over on the other side of the Pichilingue Peninsula near La Ventana and Isla Jacques Cousteau. Most anglers opt to take a one-hour van ride and launch at Punta Arena de la Ventana, rather than going by panga from La Paz over to the area.

Because the waters are so calm in the channel of Isla Cerralvo, fly-fishing and kayak fishing are common in addition to traditional fishing. Catch from inshore fishing includes snapper, grouper, sea bass, and mackerel. Many anglers are after the world-record pez gallo (roosterfish) in this region.

Can you snorkel off the beach in Panama?

The ‘off the beach’ snorkelling sites at Red Frog Beach have been voted the best in Panama, and swimmers have often spotted eagle rays, turtles and even a spiny lobster or two. A little along the coast and you will hit one of the snorkelling highlights that makes Panama totally unique, the thick mangroves.

Continuing our journey around the best snorkel sites in Central America, we land upon the underwater heaven that is Panama. Its privileged geographical location has given this country the most unusual collection of aquatic ecosystems a snorkeler could wish for. With thick, lush mangroves, white sand beaches, deep ocean valleys and vibrant coral reefs, Panama gives even the best of Belize a run for its money.

When it comes to coral reefs in Panama, you’ll be totally spoilt for choice. There are countless reefs right off the beach, and others that you can enjoy a relaxing boat ride out to. With all these options and variety, it can be hard to know exactly which snorkel site is the right one for you. But worry not, I have put together this guide of the best snorkel spots in Panama, to help you pick the perfect one.

Panama has a few outstanding national parks and reserves, which are the perfect place to enjoy a snorkelling adventure. However, one of the most impressive is Chiriqui Marine National Park. This gigantic reserve consists of over 20 small islands, each surrounded by vibrant, colourful coral reefs. If you prefer more of a solo snorkelling experience, simply travel to one of the farthest islands, where you will be met by virgin beaches and glistening turquoise waters as far as the eye can see. Chiriqui is known for its large community of fire corals and anemones, some of which are the biggest of their kind in the world.

Are the beaches in Panama swimmable?

The beaches along Panama’s Pacific Coast are mainly long and wide with large waves, ideal for surfing. Meanwhile, the Caribbean side offers smaller beaches with calm waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The white-sand beaches and turquoise waters here rival the best of the Bahamas.

Having lived and worked in tourism in Panama for several years, I definitely have my favorite beaches. Here are some of the best beaches in Panama:

Guna Yala (San Blas Islands) may well be the best-kept secret in the Caribbean, although the beaches of San Blas have often been described as some of the best in the world. The development has been limited because the archipelago is controlled by the indigenous Guna tribe. There is a total commitment to maintaining a wonderful natural environment. The sands are lovely and white and the water is clear and perfect for snorkeling. Scuba diving is not allowed. Accommodation is eco-friendly and mostly rustic but that’s the charm of this “paradise on earth” and my all-time favorite place.
