Kitesurfing is a popular hobby or sports activity enjoyed by both pro and beginner kitesurfers, regardless of skill levels. It has been enjoyed since the late 90s and can be found at the beach for both hobby and sport. However, when sports have to be postponed due to rain, it is because participants or equipment cannot get wet. Kitesurfing involves the water, so one is already wet.
There are good reasons and myths surrounding surfing and kiteboarding in the rain. Gijsbertus Panhuise patented a watersport in 1970 where a rider uses a flat board or surfboard and holds on to a parachute-type kite strapped into their harness. Kite surfing is a wind-based ocean sport that uses a kite that can support the rider’s weight, moving them along the surface at speeds of 25.
However, there are some places where kitesurfing is only acceptable in rainy stormy weather. In these areas, it is acceptable to ride in the rain but must keep an eye on other riders and head back to the beach if they see others heading back. Fog and light rain can be peaceful and relaxing, but too much rain can make the kite behave unreliably.
Experience is key, and it is not recommended to go kite surfing alone in the rain. Even if a pro kite surfer is a pro, they need to get a company in case of potential danger. The kite feels a bit heavier but is not major drama. It is fine in the rain as long as it is in a shower, but keep an eye out for storm clouds forming.
