Pennington Flash Country Park is a 200-hectare (490-acre) country park located between Lowton and Leigh in Greater Manchester, England. The park offers a variety of activities, including dog-friendly areas, a clean cafe, and a new nature-themed adventure play area. The park also features new swings inspired by its surroundings.

The park is ranked No.1 on Tripadvisor among 9 attractions in Leigh and No.2 on Tripadvisor among 14 attractions in Leigh. Visitors can enjoy swimming or canoeing from the yacht club slip, but it is not allowed from the car park side of the flash. The Leigh Lowton Sailing Club allows paddleboarding membership, and Wigan Canoeing Group offers kayaking, open canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding at Scotmans Flash on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons from March to October.

The park also features a new children’s play area and a network of paths for families. The Sailing club owns a large portion of the water, so they can do as they like, but they should only swim within their ownership boundaries. Can you canoe on the Royal Military Canal?

To use your own boat, rowing boat, canoe, paddle board, dinghy or other small non-motorised craft between Seabrook Outfall and West Hythe Dam on the Royal Military Canal you must have a permit and public liability insurance. Model boats are not permitted on the canal.

The Royal Military Canal (originally intended to be a Napoleonic defence) is now an award-winning haven for wildlife, recipient of the Green Flag award every year since 2010.

Officially designated an NNR by Natural England in October 2022 in recognition of their remarkable natural beauty and immense ecological importance, these precious wetland habitats were originally and uniquely formed by the ‘flash’ flooding of former coal mining sites.
