Can Someone With Epilepsy Get A Sailing License?

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) allows people with a history of epilepsy who have been seizure-free off medication for 10 years to obtain a commercial driver’s license. However, this does not necessarily mean that individuals with epilepsy cannot obtain a drivers license. State laws may impact the ability to get a license or set restrictions on driving.

A standard car driving license is required for taxi driving, but some local authorities may set higher medical standards. For example, Transport for London will only allow drivers with 12 months or more since their first seizure to drive. If a person with epilepsy wishes to drive for the first time, they must fill out an application for a license, potentially with a special form.

Finding jobs with epilepsy can be challenging, especially if seizures are not fully controlled. However, there are many great jobs for people with epilepsy, and no licensure is required in most cases. It is recommended to wear a life vest and take a boating course for safety.

Sailing alone with epileptic spouses should not be done if recent seizures occur. If sailing with others, it is essential to wear PFD at all times and make a satisfactory physical optical examination. The RMV does not suspend the license, but requires drivers to not drive until they have gone six months seizure-free following a seizure.

Water sports, including swimming, snorkeling, jet-ski riding, windsurfing, and sailing, are risky for people with epilepsy, but with a few exceptions, it is recommended to ride with someone who knows what to do if they have a seizure.

There are also concerns regarding the risk of interaction of the underwater environment with anti-epilepsy medication.

What jobs should epileptics avoid?

If you have seizures, you may not be able to do jobs that risk your safety or the safety of other people. These include:

  • Jobs that involve driving
  • working at heights, near open water or fire
  • working with unguarded machinery.

Whether or not you can work on active service in the Armed Forces (Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy) depends on your epilepsy. For example, if you have epilepsy now you wouldn’t be able to join the Armed Forces. If you had epilepsy as a child (under five years old) or a single seizure more than ten years ago, you may be able to join.

If I’m applying for a job do I have to mention my epilepsy?. No you don’t have to, but for safety reasons it can be a good idea to tell an employer about your epilepsy.

Can I snorkel if I have epilepsy?

We will begin by talking about water sports. In general, water sports, including swimming, snorkeling, jet-ski riding, windsurfing, and sailing, are risky for people with epilepsy, but with a few accommodations, they can be safely pursued by some.

Death from drowning is more common among people with epilepsy. For those who lose consciousness during seizures it’s especially dangerous to be in water, and should one occur, emergency care must go beyond the standard seizure first aid procedures.

To help promote the safety of swimming, individuals withepilepsy will want to consider some things:

  • Choose a swimming location. Swimming in a pool is safer than open water or a river that may have currents, tides, sudden changes in depth, and colder water temperatures. However, some pools, such as hotel pools, may not have lifeguards on duty which pose an additional risk.
  • Stay hydrated. Hunger or dehydration can cause seizures. Make sure to check in with yourself, or your loved one, before going in the water. This is especially important on hot, humid days.
  • Have an “informed buddy” with you during swimming or water sports. The American Red Cross recommends using the “Reach” system – making sure someone is within “reach” at all times. The “informed buddy” should be familiar with your specific seizure symptoms and the steps to provide immediate assistance. A tool that can explain different types of seizures is the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota’s (EFMN) “Seizure Recognition and Response” brochure. Another tool to help the “informed buddy” is the seizure first aide app. Kids and adults should use an “informed buddy,” even when seizures are well controlled. If the person with epilepsy has any implanted devices (such as a vagal nerve stimulator) or rescue medications, the “informed buddy” should know where it is stored and/or its safe use.
  • Lifeguards, when possible. If you’re at the pool, it is important to tell lifeguards that you or someone you are with has a seizure disorder. States vary widely on the legal requirement for a lifeguard being on site during operation. In Minnesota, look for signs stating if a lifeguard is on duty
  • at a public pool open to use, a warning sign must be in plain view. Minnesota Statute 4717.0950 states the following about the training and responsibilities needed for a lifeguard on duty:

Can people with epilepsy be pilots?

Epilepsy. Pilots suffering from epilepsy are not allowed to fly due to the nature of the disease. To maintain the safety of the pilot and the crew, the CAA mandates that pilots with a history of epilepsy disclose their ailment to the CAA.

Let’s take a look at some of the medical conditions that can prevent you from flying.

Flying an aircraft not only requires good skills but also excellent health. If you have been looking to get a pilot licence, it would be a good idea to first go through a list of disqualifiers that can either make it harder or impossible for you to get a licence.

The CAA has outlined strict guidelines related to health and expects all pilots to carry a valid medical certificate. This certificate is mandatory for all types of pilots and crucial in keeping the skies safe for everyone.

Can people with epilepsy go on cruises?

The Americans with Disabilities Act protects all aspects of travel by bus, rail, cruise ships and while in an airport (prior to boarding the flight). The Air Carrier Access Act protects people with disabilities while on an airplane.

Air travel consists of two parts: the airport and the airplane. Different rules apply to each part of flying with epilepsy. The ADA applies while you are in the airport. However, once you board on the airplane, the Air Carrier Access Act applies (ACAA).Important Considerations:

You can never be forced to travel with a companion just because you are a person with epilepsy. You also don’t have to disclose that you have epilepsy. The rules for what type of service dogs will be allowed onboard the plane can be found on the United States Department of Transportation website. Bringing a service dog along with you on a flight will require advanced planning.;

If you are a person who uses medical marijuana to help control seizures, there are a few things to consider when traveling by airplane. Marijuana is still a Schedule I drug. You should give careful consideration about traveling with it. You may live in a state where medical marijuana is legal but be traveling to a state where it is not legal. In addition, when you are on an airplane, you are flying in space governed by the Federal government. While TSA are not law enforcement officers with the power of arrest, they do have the power to detain you and call local law enforcement. Traveling to a foreign country with medical marijuana should be approached with great care and you should research the consequences of that. You can find more information from TSA about traveling with medical marijuana, and what is considered legal on their website.

Which jobs are not suitable for epilepsy patients?

  • Stress. Feeling stressed is one of the most common seizure triggers, which means that many high pressure jobs – from finance to restaurant work to sales – can be very difficult for people with epilepsy.
  • Tiredness. Having seizures and taking epilepsy medication can make you feel very tired. This can affect your productivity at work, and mean jobs like retail, telemarketing or customer service might not be suitable.
  • Forgetfulness. Having seizures and taking medication can also make you forgetful. This can be an issue in jobs which require short term memory – particularly things like customer service.
  • Safety. If your seizures are not controlled, there are some jobs that are very difficult to do with epilepsy. Many driving jobs, jobs where you work at heights, by the water, or with machines are particularly risky.
  • Stigma. While attitudes towards people with epilepsy are improving, there is still stigma around the condition, which can make finding a job harder.

Who is the most famous person with epilepsy?

Theodore Roosevelt: Throughout his life, Roosevelt suffered from epilepsy and was prone to epileptic seizures, but that did not hold him from his convictions. Upon the end of the Spanish-American war, he was elected governor of New York in 1898. Named as Vice President under President McKinley’s re-election in 1901, he assumed the presidency at age 42 after McKinley was assassinated.

James Madison: In 1775, James Madison attended a militia drill and suddenly collapsed without warning. Madison’s collapse at age 24 has been referred to as an “absence seizure” because the victim appears to momentarily be elsewhere. These seizures, a form of epilepsy also known as “petit mal” (from the French word for “little illness”) usually are brief, often less than 15 seconds and barely noticeable, in contrast to other seizure disorders.

Harriet Tubman: When Harriet Tubman was a teenager, she acquired a traumatic brain injury when a slave owner struck her in the head. This resulted in her developing epileptic seizures and hypersomnia. She did not let her disability keep her or those around her enslaved. Tubman is a prominent figure and was not afraid to be a leader as an African American, a woman and a person with a disability.
