Which one is better, Royal Caribbean or Carnival?
Is Royal Caribbean or Carnival better? Assuming both cruise lines can fit your date, destination and amenity preferences, Royal Caribbean comes out ahead. This is particularly true if your budget can accommodate the higher cost for interior cabins and/or you aren’t traveling with kids.
Meanwhile, more price-sensitive solo/couple travelers may prefer Carnival. It offers ample specialty dining and activity options, not to mention a good experience at a generally cheaper price point. While suites are more expensive for traveling families, the entertainment available to young cruisers is hard to beat.
Why is Carnival so cheap?
To encourage onboard spending, cruise lines may offer lower upfront fares, knowing that passengers will likely spend more once they’re on the ship. Furthermore, some Carnival cruise itineraries are shorter and visit destinations that are closer to their homeports, which can result in lower fuel and operating costs.

Do they sell clothes on a cruise ship?
Can I buy clothing on the cruise if I accidentally leave something at home?. Most cruise ships have shops onboard, where you can purchase clothing, shoes (typically sandals and flip flops) or accessories you forgot to bring. The options are limited, so if you’re picky, wait until you’re in port to shop around.
Can I do laundry onboard so I don’t have to bring as many clothes?. If you’re a light packer or want to reuse some of your clothing items during the cruise, most cruise lines including luxury and river offer laundry services onboard. Prices are typically based on single articles of clothing and fluctuate depending on the cruise line. Expect to pay roughly between $2 to $8 per shirt or blouse, unless you’re in a suite or loyalty program that includes laundry service. Some cruise lines even put self-serve launderettes on their cruise ships, if you want to save money and wash your own clothes a cheaper but more time-consuming option.

Are there retail shops on cruise ships?
Will my cruise ship have a gift shop or other stores onboard?. Most large cruise ships have several shops, usually placed together in an onboard “mall” area. On a typical ship, you’ll find a boutique that sells handbags and cruise-y clothing (with and without the cruise line’s logo), T-shirts, books, items for kids and souvenirs; a high-end jewelry store that also sells watches; and another store that sells duty-free items, such as perfume, cigarettes, chocolate, alcohol and makeup.
Some ships have even more specialized designer boutiques. Celebrity Cruises, for example, has a standalone Michael Kors boutique and also carries name brands like Kate Spade, Cole Haan, Trina Turk and Hugo Boss on some ships.
Other places where shopping lurks on the ship include the photo gallery, which often sells camera equipment and accessories like memory cards; the computer lounge, which might sell gadgets and equipment (some Celebrity ships have iLounges that sell Apple products); the art gallery, where you can buy original works; and even the bar, where you can sometimes get the drink of the day in a souvenir glass.
Do cruise ships have a general store?
What’s in Store While every cruise line is different, most vessels have five core shops: jewelry and watches; fashion; cosmetics and fragrances; logo wear and a general store selling liquor, tobacco and sundries. Some of the newest ships have recently introduced stand-alone branded stores like Coach and Guess, said Jeannette Coto, RCI manager and revenue partner. Other unique shops on the Oasis include Candy Beach on the Boardwalk deck and The Star Pier, a surfing sub-shop next door.
RCI gift shops also offer itinerary-specific products which can be purchased in the local itineraries, Coto added, which is a great resource for guests who have an all-day excursion and don’t get a chance to purchase something while in port.
Downey noted that while every ship carries perennial bestsellers like T-shirts, souvenir pins and magnets, most cruise lines make a concerted effort to compete against the ports-of-call shopping. Although some merchandise has gone more upscale, there are more bargain-hunting shoppers and international guests sailing the seas than ever before.
