The USA’s speed during the 33rd Americas Cup was attributed to 3M, a supplier of friction-reducing materials. NASA scientists created drag-reducing patterns called riblets, which were applied to the hull of Stars Stripes sailboat. However, they were later outlawed due to their heat and oozing properties.
Riblets were first used on Dennis Conners Americas Cup 12 boat, and they were applied using a special vinyl tape. The U.S. rowing shell that competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics at Los Angeles had several boats fitted with riblet tapes. They worked with 3M to adapt the riblets to a thin film used to coat the hull of Stars Stripes before the riblets were banned.
The International Rowing body banned 3m Riblet Tape due to its heat and oozing properties. Surface preparations such as PolyOx are also banned for their ability to create airwater. Steel can be an excellent material for deep water boats, but there are considerations such as the grade of steel and the use of butyl.
Both butyl and polyester resins are used in boat construction, but most require a layer of waterproof gel coat to keep the water in. One technique for reducing ship hull drag is by imbuing surfaces with hydrophobic properties. A common misconception about water-based bottom paint is that it will dissolve and leave the hull with no antifouling protection once the boat is in the water. Not true. Once cured, the water in water-based bottom paint evaporates and leaves a protective film containing the biocide.

Unlike on a fibreglass yacht, though, you cannot install electronic devices or mount deckware without knowing exactly what you are doing. Throughout its life, too, the underwater surfaces must be well cared for, with plenty of sacrificial anodes and regular, careful inspections.

You might know you have been meticulous, but they don’t, and this can affect the value of aluminium yachts on the second-hand market.
Scratching or abrading the underwater antifoul and gelcoat can give shudders to a GRP boat owner. But scratching the underwater surface coating is a real worry for owners of aluminium hulls.
What type of planing hull handles rough water the best?
V-Shaped Hulls. “V-shaped” hulls are planing hulls, and are the most common type of hull for powerboats. Deep v-shaped boats are designed to plane on top of the water at higher speeds and provide a smoother ride through choppy water. These boats are usually equipped with a larger engine than flat or round-bottomed boats.
Multi-Hulled. Finally, let’s look at “multi-hulled” boats. These boats can have either planing or displacement hulls depending on the shape of hull and size of engine. Multi-hulled boats are some of the most stable on the water. They also require more room to steer and turn. Examples of common multi-hulled boats are catamarans and pontoon boats.
What hull shape has the least drag?
Semi-Displacement Hulls. Semi-displacement hulls combine rounded sections for increased storage and tankage, and flatter hull sections to partially lift the forward part of the hull out of the water, thereby decreasing drag at high cruising speeds. They generate large bow and stern waves and may need high horsepower engines to get on plane. Larger, cruising motor yachts lean toward the semi-displacement design.
Multi-Hulls. Boats with separate and distinct hulls are called multi-hulls and can be catamarans or trimarans. Multi-Hulls can be either power or sailboats and have displacement or planing hulls depending their shape and the size of their engines.
Catamarans: Catamarans have two hulls with a deck or trampoline in between. Their benefits include excellent stability and depending on size and type, significant living space aboard. Large cats (35 feet and over) have become popular in charter use because they offer more interior and deck space and an easier motion to induce less seasickness. With two engines, catamarans are very maneuverable but they do require more room to turn and berth. Small catamarans usually have just a trampoline in between the hulls and make fun daysailers.

The flat stern provides speed and stability while the V-shaped bow improves maneuverability. This type of boat hull is the ultimate compromise—it has a little of everything but doesn’t truly excel in any category.
