Why India’S Tourism Is Declining?

India is facing challenges in attracting tourists, including increasing competition from other countries, a shortage of hotels, and concerns about visitor safety. With a 166% surge in arrivals, the impact on locals and nature is concerning. India has slid down from 46th in 2019 to 54th place in the global travel and tourism development index. Tourism is 4.6 of the country’s GDP and is not a priority sector for the Government of India. The UN World Tourism Organization predicts international travel won’t fully recover before 2024.

To tackle overtourism, India needs to adopt resource management technology, create resilient infrastructure, and address issues such as inadequate transport, information technology, infrastructure, and tourist facilities. Additionally, persistent issues such as labor shortages, supply and demand imbalances, and price increases have strained destinations and businesses.

Despite these challenges, tourism numbers across India have increased to 87 of pre-COVID levels, with external tourism estimated at just under 7 million in 2023. In India’s famed destinations, disempowerment of local communities and rapid environmental decline signal the need for more sustainable, inclusive tourism. Indian tour operators are witnessing a decline in leisure travelers from the European market due to several factors including the economic slowdown.

The pandemic has significantly reduced the number of tourists traveling to different countries, including India. To arrest further decline in tourist numbers, India must implement measures to address climate challenges, improve infrastructure, and promote sustainable, inclusive tourism.

What is a major problem of India’s travel and tourism industry?

The Indian tourism industry faces several challenges, including insufficient digital promotion and marketing, high taxes on airline facilities, hotels, and tour operators, increasing security issues like sexual abuse of women, theft, and credit card fraud, and public violence. To address these issues, a National Tourism Authority (NTA) should be established to execute and operationalize various tourism-related initiatives, while a National Tourism Advisory Board (NTAB) should provide overall vision, guidance, and direction for the development of the tourism sector.

Creating synergy in the tourism eco system is crucial for ensuring synergy at various levels of government and with the private sector. A robust framework for quality certification of products and services across all segments should be laid down. Enhancing existing luxury tourism products, such as Nilgiri Mountain Railway and Palace on Wheels, should be enhanced and their numbers should be increased. Railways can play a game changer by operating more trains connecting tourist destinations and providing an array of products, from luxury tourist trains to budget catering tourist trains.

Prioritizing popular tourist destinations is essential, and the Indian Government has taken several initiatives to promote tourism. The Swadesh Darshan Scheme, launched in 2014-15, encourages theme-based tourism and develops tourism-related infrastructure at over 500 tourist destinations. The National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI) aims to use technology to empower businesses, and the E-tourist Visa initiative simplifies the process of obtaining a tourist visa for foreign nationals.

The Indian Government has also launched advertising campaigns, such as the Italy edition of Incredible India Reconnect 2022, the International Buddhist Conclave, the National Mission for Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) scheme, a multilingual tourist helpline, and the Dharamshala Declaration, which recognizes India’s potential in supporting global tourism and promoting domestic tourism.

In conclusion, the Indian tourism industry needs to address these challenges and work towards a more sustainable and efficient tourism sector. By implementing these initiatives, the Indian government can continue to capitalize on its rich cultural heritage and attract international tourists.

  • We are Indians we have self respect ✊ we don’t need any red carpets, we need respect to our nation, leaders and also our people. They need us for revenue. But we have 10000 of wonderful tourism places in our great country within budget. First of all we need great apologies from their main leaders not from chota leaders. Hello Maldivians u prefer China, we prefer Lakshadweep ❤

  • Dude, they dont feel bad about what they did .. They feel bad about losing 💰from our tourists. Let Muizzu go to the town square, remove his INDIA-OUT T-shirt .. put INDIA-WELCOME T-Shirt and campaign everywhere where he had campaigned wearing that stupid INDIA-OUT T-Shirt .. then at least our tourists MAY start thinking about …. Mad-Dive. … what we really want to see is LAKSHADWEEP becoming the Hottest tourist Destination.

  • Maldives is a gone case – badly indoctrinated in the wrong way. He fought his presidential election championing the slogan, “India out!”. And he won it, and closely on it heals the Indian soldiers in station were literally chucked out. So no point in trying to patch up with them. Why, we have our Lakshadweep string of islands, which perhaps have greater potential as a tourist destination. And then the Andamans. So let us start the game first with our Lakshadweep islands!

  • If you are an Indian and still visiting. You might get good price deal, you might get special treatment also.. but listen to what these ministers said and for once have a conscience and do what’s right. It is to stand with India. And promote Lakshadweep. Let it be a lesson to all our allies… If you are not for us, then you are against us. 🙏

  • Why on earth is Maldives howling about loss of revenue when their current leader is the one who instigated all this through his ‘INDIA OUT’ campaign. Even the Maldivians are to blame to a certain extent for even voting for such a person inspite of being fully aware of the intentions of Muizzu. Why aren’t more Chinese, Turkish and Pakistani tourists aiding Muizzu.

  • I cannot believe in spite of all the India out campaign by Mizuzu and anti-India actions by the current Maldivian Govt that nearly 40,000 plus Indian have visited Maldives in this year alone as of now. Who are these tourists, the govt ought to check on this. Also Indians should keep a watch on any celebrity doing Maldivian promotion or reels.

  • The reason why Maldives is rattled is becoz their revenue drop has caused a distress. Imagine if Maldives tourism was a multi billion dollar industry where people from across the globe would visit then they would not beg India to come to their place and would infact keep abusing our PM and people alike. It’s out of desperation they are doing this but we need to be resilient and not allow them our money.

  • If the majority of the people in Maldives dont want India, then there is no point in going there and helping their tourism industry. Let their people change the present Govt which is pro china. Now their Tourism is affected. but if we stop supplying the essential food and many other products then it is disaster for them. Let thier people realize the mistake and outst or throw the present Govt.

  • Definately No No to Maldives. They abused our PM for no reason even though we have been generous to them. Even 31000 tourists from India is too many. We have a huge coastline and beautiful beaches in our own country. We should have nationalistic pride in our own country. Maldives is also an Islamic radicalised country. Absolutely avoid.

  • We are Human beings. We get hurt and insulted like anybody else. India Out … OK Boss! Muizzu has not apologized. We give Maldives 3 months to: 1) Get Doctors from Turkey or elsewhere. 2) Get all food supplies elsewhere, 3) Arrange for medical services with some other countries. Bharat will accommodate Only emergencies. 4) Return our dues, ask China or Turkey they will help, they are nice Guys, unlike Bharat. Bharat gave Maldives tourists, food supplies, medicine, medical support, pilots, free vaccinations, grant of 770 Crore in 2023-24 alone, donated aircrafts, still executing Infra projects, and some- which amounts to almost nothing…. The Whole world is waiting to Give Maldives more if Bharat is made to GET OUT !! More than 50% Maldivians supported “INDIA OUT” obviously local sentiments are against Bharat. Jesus Christ said ‘don’t throw pearls before swine’. Maldivians want everything from us. But they want to show they don’t need “India”… Let’s get out. Just and fair.
