Why Does My Kayak Not Go Straight?

Kayaks can be difficult to paddle in a straight line, especially for beginners due to their non-symmetrical nature and tendency to turn in one direction or the other. To avoid drifting off course, it is essential to maintain a straight line. Common reasons for kayak not going straight include improper paddling technique, wind or current, or misaligned rudder.

To keep your kayak straight, it is crucial to apply proper body posture, find the right type of paddle, and improve your feather blades. Feather blades are easier to use and reduce wind resistance, giving the kayak more momentum. Additionally, cocking can occur when the paddle passes the side of the kayak, creating a pressure difference between that side and the other side, pushing the kayak toward lower pressure and turning.

Stuff dangling in the water on one side, warpage from storing it on its side, or one side of the kayak being too short can also cause this issue. Leaning over every paddle stroke helps the boat turn, while not holding the paddle centered can result in more power on one side.

Several reasons for kayak not tracking straight include improper paddling technique, body posture, and the kayak itself. A sweep stroke keeps the paddle close to the surface of the water, while proper body posture is essential when paddling. The narrow shape of a kayak can cause it to tip sideways before moving. Going straight in a kayak is a competition between the forces acting to turn the kayak and the kayak’s tracking, or resistance to turning.

Additionally, asymmetry in your physiology, such as muscular problems in the back or shoulders, or uneven distribution of personal belongings, can also contribute to kayak straying. By understanding these causes, you can take steps to correct your kayak’s movement and enjoy a smoother, more efficient paddle experience.
