Why Did The Queen Mary Ship Stop Sailing?

The Queen Mary, also known as the Grey Ghost, was a ship that sailed on its maiden voyage on 27 May 1936. It was sailing at considerable speed and had to carry on after hitting the HMS Curacoa. Due to the Great Depression, construction on the Queen Mary came to an abrupt halt. The British government agreed to give a loan to spur the sluggish economy, and due to the threat of German U-boats, the ship did not stop for rescue operations.

The liner was handed over to Cunard White Star Line on 11 May 1936. Due to a combination of age, lack of public interest, inefficiency in a new market, and the damaging after-effects of the national seamens strike, both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were retired from service and sold off. By 1965, the entire Cunard fleet was operating at a loss, and they decided to retire and sell the legendary Queen Mary.

The Queen Mary closed in 1992, but reopened the following year. It also closed in 2020-22 during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 1967, the Queen Mary completed her final voyage from Southampton, docking in Long Beach, California, where she remains permanently moored. Twenty of the Queen Mary’s lifeboats were left off the ship to save weight, and they were lifted into their new home.

The Queen Mary closed to the public in May 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Prior to this, it was estimated that the ship had been closed for over three years due to the pandemic and much-needed repairs.
