Does Sergey Brin own a yacht?

The sleek, silver-and-white vessel sits among a smattering of other high-end cruisers, but this boat is a bit different: Butterfly, as the yacht is known, is owned by the world’s 13th-richest person, Google’s cofounder Sergey Brin.

Butterfly isn’t the tech mogul’s only oceangoing investment. Brin has quietly collected a fleet of luxury yachts and water-sports vehicles that those in his inner circle call the “Fly Fleet,” a recent Insider investigation into the post-Google lives of the 49-year-old and his fellow Google founder, Larry Page, found.

The blossoming armada is just one part of how he’s keeping busy since stepping back from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, in 2019 — along with a string of high-flying parties, an effort to build a new generation of zeppelins, and hundreds of millions of dollars in philanthropic donations.

According to people close to Brin, the Fly Fleet consists of three major vessels and a coterie of small craft and water-sports equipment. First, there’s Dragonfly — a 73-meter flagship yacht that features a helipad and movie theater and that was once described by Boat International as the “fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water.”

This list of motor yachts by length, is a table of the world’s longest active superyachts, with an overall length of at least 75 metres (246ft) and up.

These boats are also known as “megayachts”, “gigayachts” and even “terayachts”, usually depending on length. It has been generally accepted by naval architects and industry executives that superyachts range from 37m (≈120ft) to 60m (≈200ft), while those over 60m are known as megayachts and boats over 90m (≈300ft) have been referred to as giga-yachts.

Are pursuit and tiara the same?

The Tiara 3100’s from the ’80’s were sometimes outfitted with extra fishing equipment and referred to as Tiara Pursuits. The only difference between a Tiara and a Tiara Pursuit was a couple fishing options and a couple brand badges. Towards the end of the ’80’s/beginning of the ’90’s S2 decided to try to differentiate the brands a little more and started making a few dedicated Pursuit models (1990 Pursuit 3250 Express may have been the first). They redesigned the Tiara 3100 in ’92 and then a year later they decided to keep making the old version and call it the Pursuit 3100. They changed a few things including the portlights as you mentioned, but it was the same boat. So a ’93+ Pursuit 3100 was essentially a pre ’92 Tiara 3100. Then for a year in 1994 they decided to call the Pursuit 3250 Express the Tiara 3300 Offshore but only made it for a year. Point in mentioning that is that S2 was pretty confused about how to handle the Pursuit vs Tiara branding throughout the ’90’s and went back and forth and did things that didn’t really make sense.

They didn’t really get it straight until about 2006 when they finally decided all Pursuits would be outboards and would be made in Florida and all Tiaras would be inboards and would be made in Michigan (up until that point nearly all inboard Pursuits were still made in MI). But then, of course, recently they started making some outboard Tiaras which again blurred the lines between the brands and that is likely what led them to sell off Pursuit.

I didn’t get into the ‘Continental’ name at all. The Continental name was used in various ways over the years (more branding confusion). I know that the 2700 was made as an Open and a Continental with the Continental being a cruising oriented boat with a midcabin and the Open being a more standard fish/cruise mix that Tiara is known for. I thought they used the Continental name w/the 3100 for the Flybridge version for a year or two but that doesn’t line up w/the picture you posted which looks like a 3100 Open. So I’m confused on that one.

Who bought Malibu Boats?

Malibu “was early to recognize the importance of wake boarding as an outgrowth of the traditional sport of water skiing”, and therefore became positioned to capitalize on this market. By 2002, Malibu was “arguably the largest custom ski boat manufacturer in the world”. In 2006, Black Canyon Capital, as the primary investor, acquired Malibu Boats. Malibu’s market share grew during the Great Recession of the mid-2000s, as most companies in the industry were contracting.

In 2009, Jack Springer became CEO of Malibu. Under Springer’s direction, Malibu established the Axis Wake Research brand, and relocated the executive headquarters to the production facility in Loudon, Tennessee, due to the proximity of that location to the larger freshwater marine manufacturing industry. Malibu later “decided to concentrate its boat manufacturing to Loudon”, also moving its customer service, finance, procurement and human resources operations there. As of 2012, Malibu had 325 employees in Loudon, had received 19 “Boat of the Year” awards and 31 “Product Excellence” awards, and accounted for 30 percent of the worldwide towboat market.

A new entity, Malibu Boats Inc., was formed on November 1, 2013, as the holding company for Malibu’s operations. The company then had an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in January 2014. It “began trading on the NASDAQ at a price of $14 a share”, yielding “an initial market capitalization of more than $300 million”. In mid-2014, Malibu acquired “all of the equity interests of the Malibu Boats licensee in Australia”, while assuring regional interests that boats would continue to be manufactured in Australia, with the possibility that the Australian production facility could become Malibu’s producer for the entire Asian market. As of 2017, Malibu had “grown to over 500 employees in Tennessee and nearly 600 worldwide”. In July 2017, Malibu acquired competitor Cobalt Boats in a deal “valued at $130 million”, with Malibu maintaining Cobalt’s manufacturing operations in Neodesha, Kansas, and adding Cobalt CEO Paxson St. Clair to its board of directors. In September 2017, Malibu CEO Jack Springer was named the Boating Industry Mover & Shaker of the Year.

In 2018 Malibu Boats acquired Pursuit Boats from S2 Yachts. Pursuit offers of 15 models of offshore, dual console and center console boats. The saltwater outboard fishing market is one of the largest and fastest growing segments in the marine industry.

When did Malibu buy Pursuit?

In 2018 Malibu Boats acquired Pursuit Boats from S2 Yachts. Pursuit offers of 15 models of offshore, dual console and center console boats. The saltwater outboard fishing market is one of the largest and fastest growing segments in the marine industry.

Malibu has maintained two major brands in the industry, Malibu Boats and Axis Wake, and as of 2017, has acquired the competing Cobalt Boats brand.

The company’s original brand, Malibu Boats, remains the company’s premium brand. In the early 1990s, Malibu adopted the practice of offering to fly purchasers of certain high-end custom boats to their factory headquarters, then located in Merced, “for a red carpet factory tour where they can see the special edition being built right before their eyes”. Malibu still produces 12 models at their Loudon, TN plant and offer factory tours by appointment. Several lines of boats are sold under the Malibu brand, including the “Response”, “Wakesetter”, and ultra-premium “M” series.

While the Amazon founder made waves last year with the debut of his megayacht Koru, Zuckerberg is the name on the yacht world’s lips this season.

By May, the transaction seemed all but confirmed when both the yacht and Zuckerberg made their way to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday with a fete that included a few spins on his infamous hydrofoil.

Now that summer is here, Zuckerberg has debuted Launchpad —and her support superyacht Wingman — on the biggest stage in the yachting world: the Mediterranean.
