What are the disadvantages of a snorkel on a 4WD?
Maintenance can be another concern. A snorkel system includes components that need to be checked regularly to ensure they’re free of debris and properly sealed. Failing to maintain the snorkel can lead to issues with water or dust ingress, negating the benefits the snorkel provides.
Noise is another potential drawback. Some snorkels, particularly stainless steel models, can increase the intake noise. This is especially noticeable when the vehicle is under load. While some drivers enjoy the added engine sound, others may find it intrusive.
Installing a 4×4 Snorkel. Installing a snorkel for your 4×4 can be a bit of a challenge. It’s not as simple as just bolting it on. The process usually involves cutting into the vehicle’s bodywork. This can be intimidating, especially if you’re not experienced with car modifications. Most snorkel kits come with a template to guide you on where to cut and drill. These are the general steps involved when installing a snorkel.
Before you start, it’s important to gather all the necessary tools. You’ll need a drill, a hole saw, and a variety of wrenches and screwdrivers. The snorkel kit should include all the bolts, clamps, and hoses you need. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure a proper fit.

What is a snorkel on a Jeep?
Snorkels are installed onto the air intake, creating a seal to keep water out of the engine while allowing the air intake to keep taking in air.
The snorkel pipe that runs out of the air intake then travels through the hood and up the passenger side windshield post where it is securely mounted.
With the opening to the air intake now extended up so it’s above the roof of the vehicle, the chance of sucking in water is low.
The air intake is protected and the vehicle can cross water that’s deeper than it would be able to without the snorkel.

Is a snorkel worth it on a Jeep?
Along with providing clean, dry and cool air to your engine, a snorkel can also help prevent water and dirt from entering the engine. Providing your engine with cool air increases the amount of horsepower, improves the performance of your engine and will help your vehicle last longer. Using a snorkel allows you to keep your air intake free of water and mud if you cross any deep streams or rivers while off-roading. If you are off-roading in a dry dusty area, a snorkel will prevent dust and dirt from being pulled into your engine.
Many off-road enthusiasts feel that the addition of a snorkel is important in maintaining your engine and keeping it free of water and dirt while off-roading. Others feel that it is an unnecessary accessory to add. If you do the majority of your off-roading in areas that are very dusty you may want to consider installing a snorkel. It also makes sense for those of you who do a lot of off-roading in wet areas or areas that require you to cross deep rivers or streams.
Deciding if a snorkel is necessary for your Jeep is purely up to you, but there are many benefits the most important being prolonging the life of your engine. Anyone who has had to replace the engine in their Jeep knows how costly it can be. Adding a snorkel may be something that only hardcore off-roaders choose to do, but it is important that you understand the benefits a snorkel has to offer when making your decision.

📹 What Does a Jeep Wrangler Snorkel Really Do? | Jeep FAQ
So one of the questions we get all the time is if I buy a wrangler with a snorkel kit obviously I can go underwater up to about here …
Nice article. I just got a new JLUR XR with the factory installed CAI. Factory does not install the hood vent. But I want to change the reusable filter to the stock “paper” disposable one as the stock air filter may be more suitable for dusty environment. Do I just need to remove the 4 screws from the box or do I need to loosen the clamp on the intake tube too?
