Is Bavaria Yachts Manufacturer In Financial Trouble?

Bavaria Yachts, one of the world’s largest production boatbuilders, is in financial trouble after US investors withdrawn support for the company. The German yacht manufacturer, acquired by Bain Capital at the peak of the buyout boom, is set to be taken over by Oaktree Capital and Anchorage Advisers. Bavaria Yachts has been bought out of administration by a private equity fund advised by German investment company CMP Capital Management-Partners. The new owners of Bavaria Yachtbau, American companies Anchorage Advisors and Oaktree Capital Management, provided the German manufacturer with a private equity fund advised by the German investment company CMP Capital Management-Partners to continue Bavaria Yachtbau GmbH. The subsidiary Bavaria has agreed not to disclose financial details.

Bavaria Yachts placed itself into self-administration in April after falling into financial difficulty. The group was bought out by a German private equity fund. Bavaria filed for insolvency after investors Oaktree and Anchorage pulled out due to high losses and several hundred million EUR debt caused by the company. In fiscal 2016/2017 (ending 31 August), Bavaria Yachts reported boat sales of a good EUR 1 billion and is operating with a profit.

Which country builds the best yachts?

NORTHERN EUROPE. The Northern European countries are especially known for building fully custom and semi-custom motor and sailing yachts. The Netherlands and Germany top the yachting industry for delivering yachts over 50m with large volume and a high value. German builders Lürssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Nobiskrug deliver full-custom yacht projects, while Dutch builders like Amels/Damen Yachting, Heesen and Moonen build high-end semi-custom yachts based on model platforms. In the full custom category, Feadship, Oceanco and Royal Hakvoort specialize in the construction of full-custom motor yachts, while Royal Huisman delivers made-to-measure sailing yachts. Both custom and semi-custom yachts built in Northern Europe tend to keep a far higher resale value on the brokerage market. Thanks to their high-quality finish and extreme levels of customization, it’s fair to say that these yachts are akin to floating works of art.

Among Northern Europe’s production series yards, Sunseeker, Princess Yachts and Pearl Yachts offer motor yachts between 17m and 40m. These directly compete with Southern European yacht builders. Among the Mediterranean countries, Italy and Turkey are the two main producers for semi-custom and production series yachts up to 50m. Most Italian-built yachts are made from GRP and often form part of a branded series for yards, examples of which are Sanlorenzo, Custom Line, Ferretti, Benetti, Arcadia Yacht, Maiora, Falcon Yachts and Amer Yachts.

ITALY. When it comes to speed, Italian builders, such as AB Yachts, Tecnomar, Azimut, Mangusta, Leopard Yachts, Riva and Pershing, excel in planing and open vessels. But over the past decade, a flurry of new yacht builders has entered the market delivering lager yachts and more customizable options that rival heritage builders like Baglietto, Codecasa and ISA Yachts. Perini Navi remains one of the most exclusive sailing yacht builders offering performance and style, but when it comes to innovative design solutions, Columbus Yachts, Tankoa, Cantiere delle Marche and the revival of Admiral brought have risen through the pack.

What is the history of Bavaria yachts?

The Bavaria Yachtbau shipyard was founded in 1978 by Winfried Herrmann in Germany. Herrmann was an aeronautical engineer with a passion for sailing. He started building sailing boats for his own use, and then decided to found his own company to produce high quality boats at affordable prices.

The evolution of Bavaria models. Since its foundation, Bavaria Yachtbau has experienced a significant development as a European yacht builder. The first Bavaria models were mainly cruising yachts. Later on, the yard moved into the construction of motor yachts.

Bavaria’s first sailing yacht models were the Bavaria 707, 808 and 909. These yachts, designed for coastal cruising, were a great success in Europe.
