I live in Florida. I don’t care how difficult it is to cut a OC shingle because of the fabric strip lol. They original roof installed in 2004 had lankmark shingles (assuming builder grade on new house). They went flying of one by one from Irma. The failure was they ripped past the nails. I choose OC because of the strip. The strip helps keep shingles from tearing through the nail heads in high winds if the glue fails and the wind gets under the shingle. I like shingles that don’t fly off easier because of high winds even if they look ” nicer” lol again. They don’t look so nice scattered around the neighborhood after a hurricane.
I bought a new house and within 5 years the Certainteed shigles were turning loose and flapping in the wind. I’ve replaced a few places after breaking off but after 10 years now its getting worse. I dont know if I just got a bad batch or what but I will never have Certainteed on a house again. I really like The Owens Corning you are showing and am looking to having the roof replaced now. Thanks for the very informative article!
I like how the article points out the back of the fiberglass matting on CertainTeed actual shingle but doesn’t do it to the Owens Corning shingle. Even though they’re sitting within feet of each other. You chose to grab the sales brochure of the shingle and show the back of that to explain this fiberglass matting but in the article you can see the back of the Owens Corning shingle as you raise it up just for a second and it looks the same as a CertainTeed. Why is that? Just a question. I like both shingles but can you help me understand this?
i never liked duration shingles because that stupid fabric strip, they’re a hassle to cut during installation and while trying to cut them that fabric strip will come loose and it won’t seal back it’ll be just hanging, and if you need to repair a roof with duration shingles, it’ll be your worse nightmare you might as well just replace the entire section of roof or the whole roof, that’s probably what oc intended to do in the first place, other than that, i’ll pass on them really.
