The Manitowoc Yacht Club, founded in 1896, is a historic sailing organization located on Big Lake Vilas County, Wisconsin. The clubhouse was constructed in 1935 at the end of Commercial Street (now Maritime Drive) on the lakeshore. The building was severely damaged by ice during the winter of 1952. The club’s current location appealed to Mr. Kuntz and his friends, as it had an area of about fifty and a half acres, covered in fine timber, and was accessible by land.

B. Buisson St. Cosme, dated 1699-1700. He declares that such a cross was reared in this locality in the latter part of the seventeenth century. His words are: “the 4th of October we came to another small village of Poux (Potawatomi) on a little river where Rev. Father Marais had wintered with some Frenchmen and planted a cross”; J. G. Shea, Early Voyages (Albany, 1861), p. 50.

Hunt’s 1853 Wisconsin Gazetteer: “MANITOWOC, County, is bounded on the nortlh by Brown and Kewaunee, on the east and southeast by the State line in Lake Michigan, on the south by Sheboygan, and on the west by Calumet and a portion of Outagamie. ¿ The general formation of the surface is moderately undulating, and in some parts very agreeably diversified with hills and valleys. The soil is good and well watered, with springs and creeks, and is well adapted to tillage and grazing. The county is densely timbered with maple, oak, elm, birch, ash, pine, and hemlock. ¿ The population in 1840 was 235; 1842, 263; 1846, 629; 1847, 1,285; 1850, 3,713; at present estimated, 7,000. Dwellings, 16; fairms, 37; and mnanufactories, 22.”
What happened in Manitowoc Wisconsin in 1962?
Transmission of temperature and pressure data from the erratic satellite continued until September of 1962, when the spacecraft began a slow plunge to Earth. At about 4:30 am Central Standard Time on September 5, 1962, a 20 by 8 cm piece hit almost precisely on the center line of North 8th Street, near the intersection of Park Street, in front of the Rahr-West Art Museum. The impact of the piece embedded it three inches in the blacktop pavement. Later, small charred fragments were found on a nearby church roof, but despite an intensive search, no other fragments of Sputnik IV were ever found.
Two Manitowoc patrolmen, Marvin Bauch and Ronald Rusboldt, discovered the fragment and turned it over to authorities. Officials at NASA and the Smithsonian Institute identified threads arranged in the metric system, and the detection of two minerals created by the heat and friction of re-entry: wustite and akaganeite.
When the fragment was first offered to the Soviets, they declined its return, but eventually accepted the piece in a quiet ceremony.

28 Submarines were built in Manitowoc!. The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company holds the unique distinction of being the only inland shipyard to build submarines. The first ship, the USS PETO, was launched sideways into the river, and then proceeded under its own power out into Lake Michigan where its equipment was tested and fine-tuned. On April 30, 1942, the PETO was the first submarine launched in Great Lakes history and became the first of a total of 28 submarines subsequently built at Manitowoc Shipbuilding. The USS RASHER operated in the Pacific Theatre and sunk the second largest amount of enemy tonnage of any U.S. submarine during the war.
Manitowoc is the only city in the country to have streets named after submarines.. Custerdale, at the western city limits, was a federal project for defense workers in Manitowoc. The Division of Defense Housing built 400 houses in Custerdale for shipyard and defense plant workers in World War II. The streets in Custerdale were named after some of the 28 submarines built for the U.S. Navy by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. Today many of the original units still stand in the Custerdale community and have been modernized.

The Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans, traces its roots to the Gulf Coast resort of Pass Christian, Mississippi and to the year 1849, making it the second oldest yacht club in the United States.
New Orleans in the antebellum era was a proud, thriving port city, banking center and cultural leader. However, during the summer months, many New Orleanians retreated to the Gulf Coast to flee the heat, humidity and yellow fever. Summer homes, hotels and boarding houses dotted the coast from Waveland, Mississippi to Mobile Bay. A favorite among New Orleanians was the Pass Christian Hotel. There, SYC’s organizational meeting was held on July 21, 1849 and the hotel became its headquarters for several years. On August 8, 1849, Southern Yacht Club’s first regatta was sailed in the Mississippi Sound off of Pass Christian, Mississippi with twenty-two yachts answering the starting gun and was won by Captain Robert A. Hiern of Mobile, Alabama sailing on the sloop Undine. Activities continued at “the Pass ” until 1857 when the club relocated to New Orleans and held its regattas on Lake Pontchartrain.
The seventeen years of the American Civil War and Reconstruction greatly curtailed boating activities until 1878 when the club was reorganized and its first postwar regatta held. The following year, a handsome clubhouse was built over the water. It became the scene of many elaborate social events as well as sailing competition. In 1899 a new and larger clubhouse was erected under the leadership of Commodore Albert Baldwin. Regattas continued annually on the lake with the fleet competing each summer in interclub races on the gulf coast.
Designed by Rathbone DeBuys, a Southern YC member, the one design Fish class sloop had its debut in 1919 and quickly became the most popular one design class in the Gulf South. Other early classes of yachts introduced were the Massachusetts Bay 21 Footers, Stars and Sound Interclubs.
