The bridge on a cruise ship is where the captain and crew manage the navigation, speed, and other critical functions of the vessel. Ship bridges are located towards the front of the ship in an elevated position, allowing the captain and crew to have an unobstructed view of what is happening. Modern cruise ships typically have a glass-enclosed bridge on an upper deck near the front of the ship, giving the captain and crew a clear view forward.
The bridge is the area of the ship that contains navigation equipment and controls the ship’s movement. In modern cruise ships, the bridge is usually on an upper deck in the forward part of the ship and extends over the sides of the superstructure, allowing deck officers to view the sides of the ship as well as down to the ship. Nearly every cruise ship has a card room where passengers can meet to play bridge or gather at a shaded table on deck.
A bridge or wheelhouse is a room or platform of a ship or submarine from which the ship can be commanded. When a ship is under way, the bridge is manned by the captain and his officers. Many ships have a bridge position located about one third of the distance of the length of the ship, being the optimum position for all crew members.
The bridge is the brain of the ship, from there, the captain and his officers command and maneuver the ship, keep watch for other crew members, and ensure smooth sailing.
