Where Is Odysseus And His Men Sailing To?

Odysseus, a legendary Greek hero, recounts his journey from Troy to Ismarus, the city of the Cicones. After defeating the Cyclops, he and his crew encounter a violent storm at sea, which is Zeus’ punishment for pillaging them. As a result, Odysseus becomes curious about the nature of the cyclops and takes his crew to Polyphemus’ island to determine whether he is a savage brute or friendly, god-fearing.

Odysseus and his men sail from the land of the Cyclops to the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds. Aeolus presents Odysseus with a bag containing all the winds except Polyphemus, a Cyclops. After escaping the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men arrive at Aeolus’ home, where they are warmly welcomed and hosted for a month.

Odysseus and his men return to Aeaea after the Land of the Dead and give Elpenor proper burial rites. They escape from a cave unseen by Polyphemus, clinging to the bellies of the monsters sheep. They sail to Aeolia, where Aeolus sends Odysseus with a gift containing all the winds except Polyphemus, a Cyclops.

Odysseus and his men attack and fight native Cicones, plundering and enslaving them to resupply for their journey. After ten days of sailing, the Greeks are so close to home that they can see men tending fires on their island. Exhausted, Odysseus falls asleep and lands on Scheria, where he meets Nausicaa and visits Teiresias in the Underworld. Odysseus narrates his adventures to the Phaeacians and eventually sails to the island of Circe, where he is reunited with his crew.
