Where Can I Kayak Without A License?

Paddle UK offers a Waterways license, which allows access to 5,000 miles of inland waterways in the UK. However, there are several beautiful waterways where kayaking is allowed without a license. These include rivers, canals, and tidal rivers. To canoe, kayak, or paddle board on many of these waterways, a licence is required.

In Ohio, you can register your kayak at various locations, such as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources office or an approved DNR. The Lake District provides excellent opportunities for beginners to take to the water in a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Tidal rivers do not require a license, but there are two other rivers where there is a public right of paddling without a license.

A British canoeing license is available in Wales, Ireland, and other countries. No license is required to paddle in these countries, except for waterways in England and Wales. If you’re unsure about a waterways license, consult your local jurisdiction.

Everyone is welcome to canoe on canals and rivers, but a small craft license is required before paddling on the water. A British Waterways license may be necessary for non-powered kayaks or canoes unless using a PA Fish and Boat Commission boat ramp or surrounding property.
