When did yacht clubs start?
Yachting stayed the Sport of Kings for over a century, but by the 1800s yachting had grown to included participants of more than just the crown heads of Europe. The worlds wealthiest had joined in. Yacht Clubs were forming. The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club, was established in Ireland in 1720, followed the Lough Ree Yacht Club in 1770 (again in Ireland), and the Starcross Yacht Club in 1772 in England.
Cowes Castle became the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Squadron around 1858.
Probably the most famous of all the English yacht clubs the The Royal Yacht Squadron was founded on June 1, 1815 in the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London as The Yacht Club by 42 gentlemen interested in yachting.
Across the pond the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was started on July 30, 1844 when John Cox Stevens invited eight friends to his yacht Gimcrack, anchored in New York Harbor. They formed a syndicate to build a yacht with the intention of taking her to England and making some money competing in yachting regattas and match races. They choose to build a Pilot style Schooner to represent the club; at the time there was no faster design!

Is Buckeye Lake safe to swim in?
While the levels of E. coli in Buckeye lake are deemed safe, there are those who are trying to ensure the highest water quality within the area.
A group called Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow has taken the initiative of installing “bubblers” within the lake that circulate oxygen through the water to improve its quality. In addition to Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow’s efforts, H2Ohio – launched by Gov. Mike DeWine in 2019 – has also been working to improve water quality.
Through the use of human-built wetlands, H2Ohio has been filtering water that enters Buckeye Lake. Since much of that water is agricultural runoff, it often contains pollutants such fertilizers, pesticides, soil particles and phosphorus, which could affect the water quality of Buckeye Lake. Through these wetlands, much of the nitrogen, phosphorus, E. coli bacteria and other substances are filtered out before they can make it to the lake.
“Just making sure that people have a safe place to swim is part of that customer-service thing. You don’t want somebody to come and bring their grandparents that are in their 80s and they get sick because they consumed some water while swimming,” Hoffhines said.

Is Buckeye Lake a private lake?
Buckeye Lake State Park is Ohio’s oldest state park. This 3100-acre man-made lake was started in late the 1820s to provide a reliable water supply as the canal descended from here to the Ohio River. The Ohio & Erie Canal connected Lake Erie at Cleveland and the Ohio River at Portsmouth. In the early-to-mid 20th century, it was the site of a large amusement park with interurban train service from Columbus. Private homes line the lakefront, but the public can enjoy access for boating, fishing, and swimming at Buckeye Lake State Park. A 4-mile shoreline cycling/walking path connects the North Shore at Buckeye Lake State Park to Lieb’s Island. Crystal and Fairfield Beaches are public and open during the summer.

The Ohio & Erie Canal’s two summits were the Portage Summit at Akron and the Licking Summit at Newark. From these high points the canal went “downhill” to both the north and the south. The locks that enabled canal boats to go up and down in stair-step fashion used around 80,000 gallons of water for a single “lift,” so each summit needed a large reservoir. For the Licking Summit, a swampy pond south of Newark was the solution. After construction started in the late 1820s, the canal builders diverted water from the South Fork of the Licking River, and by 1830 the Licking Summit Reservoir had filled and became a steady water source all through the working years of the canal. Draft animals pulling boats into the lake from the canal along the north shore walked along a raised embankment to cross to the canal’s exit at Millersport.

My family and I live here in Buckeye Lake.. in fact, our daughter, at 23 just purchased the home we live in, rented from the Landlord who is retiring.. a rarity here, 4 bedroom, with two additional added on bedrooms.. a most excellent family home for three generations to share expenses, live far better than we could individually.. a come back towards what I grew up with as a child.. The dining here is limited by the size of the Village, having only about 2,050 residents.. So I forgive the McDonald’s being listed at the end.. LOL.. We like Dragon Village the BEST.. The owner, Jenny works there pretty much daily and is a good friend of our family.. her customers.. authentic Chinese cuisine, with some Americanized versions.. She and her life’s work Dragon Village are a staple here at the Lake.. A beautiful Lake Front village.. small and has that small town hospitality, very friendly feel we love.. My Mother in law, who lives with us.. God Love her.. a wonderful woman, as is the love of my life, her daughter. We just celebrated our 26th anniversary.. Had “our” small private dinner at Red Lobster in the near by Heath Ohio.. They may not be “in” the village, but are very close bye.. as is Hebron Ohio.. another tiny town that’s a great place to live.. Every place you listed is an excellent dining experience.. so no complaints from me.. Even the McDonald’s is better than your average franchise.. being here.. So Thank You kind Sir, folks for taking the time to tell people about our home and it’s fine experiences.
