Summer is a popular time for travel, making it difficult to find good deals on airfare. To book flights for summer 2025, it is recommended to book domestic summer flights between 14 and 44 days of travel, with the lowest fares coming 21 days. These are ideal time frames for finding cheap flights during peak travel times (think summer) and off-peak periods (early fall and spring).

Historically, travelers have been advised to book flights on Tuesdays to get the best flight deal. However, there is no magical time or day to book airfare for the best prices, but the best bet is to fly midweek, specifically on Wednesdays, for both domestic and international flights. March and April are the best times to lock in tickets, while June 1st is considered one of the best days to book.
The best time to book airfare is within a window of 21 to 74 days before you plan to fly, and the cheapest tickets are generally on mid-week flights. Although you can find cheap flights on Tuesdays, you might get a better deal on a Wednesday, Thursday, or any other day of the week.
For international (long-haul) flights, deals usually start 1 – 2 seasons before departure, such as summer trips. Booking about one to three months in advance is typically when cheap flights have the highest likelihood of popping up.

Why is flying in the summer so expensive?
Demand for travel is outpacing supply, with people preferring to travel during the summer months. Although airplane production has slowed down, fleet sizes are still increasing, resulting in higher demand and lower supply, leading to higher fares. As demand subsides, lower demand leads to lower fares, as seen in recent fares like $456 nonstop roundtrip from New York City to Rome and $283 roundtrip to Tulum for fall and winter travel. Oil prices play a small role in this, with the current price of oil at around $80 per barrel, up $10 from 2021 but down $30 from 2022.
Most analysts believe that some of these increased oil costs will be passed on to travelers, making tickets slightly more expensive on average than in a parallel world without Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, rising average fares don’t matter as you can only book available fares.
