What North American Province Is Viking Sailing To?

Scientists have discovered evidence that Vikings occupied a site in Newfoundland, Canada, in 1021AD. The first permanent settlement of Vikings in North America was the seaside outpost known as LAnse aux Meadows, which has tantalized archaeologists for more. The Norse exploration of North America began in the late 10th century, when Norsemen explored areas of the North Atlantic colonizing Greenland and creating a short term settlement from 793 to 1066 CE. The Vikings embarked on various expeditions, from trading voyages in the Baltic and Mediterranean to raids on the British Isles.

The first European to lay eyes on North America was likely Bjarni Herjólfsson. In the 1960s, Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad and his archaeologist wife, Stine, decided to resolve the question of whether Vinland meant. For centuries, scholars lumped Vinland together with other fabled realms like Atlantis or Avalon. However, archaeologists kept looking, and in 1960, archaeological evidence of the only known Norse site in North America, LAnse aux Meadows, was found on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland. Before the discovery of archaeological evidence, Vinland was known only from sagas and medieval historiography.

LAnse aux Meadows in Newfoundland is the only authenticated Norse settlement in North America, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Viking is adding cruise ships to North American provinces, with the second expedition vessel, Viking Polaris, due in August 2022. This new dating technique provides evidence that Vikings were present in Newfoundland in ad 1021, overcoming the imprecision of previous age estimates.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.

  • As a Maya, you can’t discover a new land that is already discovered. The Viking were the first knew outsiders from the old world but the Americas (Americas mean all of America, north, central and south are still part of a continent that make up America) has been visited by outsiders before. It’s been genetically proven that the Polynesians have been doing trade my ancestors, there are pseudo-records of China, Japan, Rome and Carthage traveling but their in the air and what evidence we did found doesn’t give us an exact answer if they truly landed or even survive the trip (plus it’s still disputed if the Chachapoya culture were truly Carthaginian or just another nation made by my people who live in Peru). All we know is that the Polynesians were our favorite trading (and love) partners while we kick out the Vikings.

  • Nice article but unfortunately weak in general culture and basic knowledge. The Spanish conquistadors reached all the way to northern parts of Georgia as well than Mexico( which is North America) as well Central America is North America. It is sad that something thar basic in knowledge is mistaking in the narrative but there are nice historical facts from the vikings expeditions and the proof of their time in this continent
