Which Cruise Line has its own private island?
Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered the private island trend when it opened Great Stirrup Cay in 1977. Once a hideout for buccaneers, the island is a port of call on all NCL cruises in the Bahamas, offering a host of activities for modern-day adventurers, alongside a raft of more tranquil pursuits.
There’s the opportunity to snorkel through an underwater garden filled with 23 sculptures – among them mermaids, seahorses, camels and even a piano – or take a short boat trip to nearby Treasure Island to swim with pigs in the shallows. Back on dry land, thrill-seekers can see the beach from a completely different perspective on a series of zip lines that start 120ft above the ground. If that all sounds a bit much, spend your time chilling out in a cabana before heading for lunch at the expansive 8,500 square foot beach buffet.
The line is currently building a new pier $150 million pier at the island – large enough to accommodate two ships at the same time – which is scheduled to open in summer 2025.

Why do cruise lines have private islands?
Offering sandy beaches and a variety of amenities, private destinations often garner a cruise line’s highest guest approval ratings. They are so in demand, some travel advisors say their clients don’t care where they go as long as their cruise stops at a private island or beach. And most Caribbean-bound ships oblige, some offering itineraries that visit more than one private destination and others sailing short jaunts with only a private island call.
Cruise lines are heeding the call from their customers, evolving and refining the destinations they have and opening new ones that rethink the concept of a private cruise destination. In some cases, they are shifting from private, secluded stops to optional offerings adjacent to the public ports that are critical to their itineraries.
In all cases, the offerings provide what makes them so popular: an exclusive extension of the cruise experience ashore.

The private islands of Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay are both located in the Bahamas, and just 15 miles from one another in the Atlantic Ocean. Half Moon Cay is its own island, while Princess Cays is located on the southern point of the island Eleuthera.
Each of these private destinations are less than 300 miles from Miami, so many cruisers will find themselves in these Bahamian ports on the first or last day of sailing from Florida.

Does Carnival cruise own a private island?
Carnival also owns the smaller Half Moon Cay, a resort-like private island in the Bahamas, that has activities like horseback riding and swimming with stingrays.

Guests can splurge on these exclusive destinations’ paid excursions, boosting the cruise line’s profits.
Which one is better, Royal Caribbean or Carnival?
Is Royal Caribbean or Carnival better? Assuming both cruise lines can fit your date, destination and amenity preferences, Royal Caribbean comes out ahead. This is particularly true if your budget can accommodate the higher cost for interior cabins and/or you aren’t traveling with kids.
Meanwhile, more price-sensitive solo/couple travelers may prefer Carnival. It offers ample specialty dining and activity options, not to mention a good experience at a generally cheaper price point. While suites are more expensive for traveling families, the entertainment available to young cruisers is hard to beat.

Royal Caribbean International (RCI), previously known as Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL), is a cruise line brand founded in 1968 in Norway and organized as a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group since 1997. Based in Miami, Florida, it is the largest cruise line by revenue and second largest by passengers counts. In 2018, Royal Caribbean International controlled 19.2% of the worldwide cruise market by passengers and 14.0% by revenue. As of January 2024, the line operates 27 ships and has three additional ships on order.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line was founded in 1968 by three Norwegian shipping companies: Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, I.M. Skaugen & Company, and Gotaas Larsen.(citation needed) The newly created line put its first ship, Song of Norway, into service two years later. A year later, the line added Nordic Prince to the fleet and in 1972 it added Sun Viking. In 1978, Song of Norway became Royal Caribbean’s first passenger ship to be lengthened. This was accomplished via the insertion of an 85-foot (26m) section to the vessel’s severed center. Following the success of this work, Nordic Prince was also stretched in 1980. During the stretching of both ships, their sterns were modified to create more open space. In 1982, Royal Caribbean launched Song of America.
