The Yarmouth Dragon Boat Regatta is a popular event in South Western Nova Scotia, featuring a 500-meter double-elimination tournament that allows teams to showcase their skill, teamwork, and endurance. The regatta takes place between the 12th and 14th July in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and is sponsored by Champagne Taittinger in association with River Yar Boatyard, Wight Marine, and Edelweiss Gurgl.
The 15th edition of the Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta (14-16 July 2023) is already attracting a mix of repeat and new competitors for a weekend of racing and practice sessions and training. Teams can book practice sessions through Yarmouth Recreation before the regatta to get familiar with the event.
The Taittinger Regatta has a growing reputation as a great fun event, with a mix of sailors and yachts. The event began primarily as a regatta for sailing boats such as the Solent Sea Birds and included races off The Common for four-oared coastguard galleys from Beaulieu, Lymington, Yarmouth, and Cowes. There were also races for pair-oared boys and swimming races, again for boys only.
The 16th edition of the Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta will take place on May 18-19, with races for keelboats and river cruisers held upstream of Acle Bridge.
For those interested in joining the regatta, the Yarmouth Gaffers Regatta is open from June 13th-16th, 2024. The regatta is open to anyone over the age of 10 and requires at least 20 paddlers.

Why is it called a regatta?
A regatta is a series of boat races. The term comes from the Venetian language, with regata meaning “contest, contention for mastery”(from regatare (“compete, haggle, sell at retail”), possibly from recatare) and typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed water craft, although some powerboat race series are also called regattas. A regatta often includes social and promotional activities which surround the racing event, and except in the case of boat type (or “class”) championships, is usually named for the town or venue where the event takes place; for example “valley field”.
Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, they are usually formally structured events, with comprehensive rules describing the schedule and procedures of the event. Regattas may be organized as championships for a particular area or boat type, but are often held just for the joy of competition, camaraderie, and general promotion of the sport.
One of the largest and most popular rowing regattas is the Henley Royal Regatta held on the River Thames, England. One of the largest and oldest yachting regattas in the world is Cowes Week, which is held annually by the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, England, and usually attracts over 900 sailing boats. Cowes Week is predated by the Cumberland Cup, Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta and Port of Plymouth Regatta. North America’s oldest regatta is the Royal St. John’s Regatta held on Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John’s, Newfoundland every year since 1818.
What is the biggest regatta in the world?
Our History. First held on October 16, 1965, the Head Of The Charles® Regatta is the world’s largest two-day rowing event.. Founders and Cambridge Boat Club members D’Arcy MacMahon, Howard McIntyre, and Jack Vincent, created the Regatta on the advice of Harvard University sculling instructor Ernest Arlett. Arlett proposed a “head of the river” race (similar in tradition to races held in his native England) be held on the Charles River. “Head” races are a class of regattas generally three miles in length. Boats compete against one another and the clock, which starts sequentially, approximately fifteen seconds apart. Winners of each race receive the honorary title “Head of the River” or, in this case, “Head Of The Charles.”
Since 1965, the Head Of The Charles Regatta has grown tremendously. Today, more than 11,000 athletes from around the world compete in 55 different race events. In 1997, the Regatta grew to a two-day event and now attracts thousands of spectators during race weekend in October. Support from numerous boat clubs, colleges and universities, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), as well as 1,700 hardworking volunteers help make the HOCR a continued success year after year.
Head Of The Charles is a registered trademark of the Cambridge Boat Club, Gerry’s Landing Road, Cambridge, MA. For more information, call Head Of The Charles at 868-6200, [email protected].

What is a regatta in sailing terms?
A regatta is a sailing sport competition, or in simpler terms, races on sailing yachts. Once an elite and expensive sport, it is now accessible to many without gender, age, or other limitations even in serious global competitions. For most Europeans, regattas in the Mediterranean are the most accessible: during the yachting season from April to November, there are numerous events, and in some places, like Cyprus, races are even held in winter. You don’t have to be an Olympic-level professional to participate in a regatta; you can enter the sailing sport literally from scratch and at any age.
The objectives of organizers and participants in regattas vary widely. Firstly, it helps promote yachting as a sport or hobby, either generally or in a specific region. Secondly, such races support yachting traditions and aid in passing on experiences to others. Another goal is to increase the visibility of brands that sponsor many regattas (for instance, brands like Rolex, Rixos, Volvo, Heineken sponsor numerous prestigious regattas). Of course, making a profit is also not insignificant. Often, well-known personalities are invited to participate in regattas to enhance their prestige.
There isn’t a single definitive answer, of course. However, many would agree that they primarily want to satisfy their sporting ambitions. If you’re someone who enjoys thrills, then a regatta is definitely for you, as the intensity of the race is always exhilarating. Many simply live for this; among them are those who earn money from regattas and those who spend quite a bit on them. An important aspect is that a regatta is a great way to hone yachting skills in competitive conditions. For many, the social aspect is crucial – gatherings, new acquaintances, networking with like-minded individuals, and sharing experiences.
How does the regatta work?
In a typical regatta, A Fleet will sail 2-3 races and then switch with B Fleet who then sails 2-3 races, and so forth. The scores of A Fleet and B Fleet for each team are combined to determine the overall winning team. Team Racing – Two teams of 3 sailboats compete head-to-head.
