Heading (HDG) is the direction in which a ship points at any instant, while speed(S) is the speed of the ship through the water. Course through the water (CTW) and heading (HDG) are for the most part interchangeable, but there are some nuanced differences.

HDG is obtained by a gyro magnetic compass, while the rate of turn (ROT) or angular velocity of the ship is obtained from the time derivative of HDG. The HDG-normal mode of the autopilot means heading.

Haading is the direction that the boat is pointed, COG is the actual course followed, and bearing is the compass heading for your waypoint. Course Over Ground (COG) is the actual direction of motion, while heading is the direction in which a vehicle points of heads at any instant.

Heading is constantly changing value as a ship oscillates or yaws across the ground. Ground Wind Speed (GWS) is the wind speed relative to the ground, while heading (HDG, HDT, HDM) is the compass direction in which the boat is pointed.

Heading sensing devices, such as autopilots, instrument compasses, and GPS compasses, are required to accurately measure heading.

Surface Preparation. When the fabricated steel arrives at the galvanizing facility, it is hung by wire or placed in a racking system which can be lifted and moved through the process by overhead cranes. The steel then goes through a series of three cleaning steps; degreasing, pickling, and fluxing. Degreasing removes dirt, oil, and organic residues, while the acidic pickling bath will remove mill scale and iron oxide. The final surface preparation step, fluxing, will remove any remaining oxides and coat the steel with a protective layer to prevent any further oxide formation prior to galvanizing. Proper surface preparation is critical, as zinc will not react with unclean steel.

What does HDG mean on a boat?

This is in effect an alternative name for heading, but with some nuanced differences that are more convention than critical.

Course through the water (CTW) and heading (HDG) are for the most part interchangeable. When referring to DR or grib reckoning (qtVlm) we would use heading (HDG) as we refer to an idealized concept. The actual direction the boat is pointed at any moment is its heading, but when we display this heading we are steering that we read with a heading sensor it would be called and displayed on meters as course through the water (CTW). In actual sailing with live NMEA input, we can average the instantaneous headings to get a more accurate CTW, sometimes called “data smoothing.”

When you want to know what the compass reads (ie which way the boat it pointed at the moment), you would probably ask the helm for your heading, not what your CTW, but when entering this in the logbook it could be called either one. Likewise a meter label could be HDG or CTW. When writing equations dependent on heading and speed, we would likely call them CTW and STW to be consistent.

Is course over ground the same as course made good?

Note we distinguish course over ground from course made good, as one being present dynamic value, and the other being past. The phrase “course made good,” can be used to refer to a single track line or to the combination of several course changes between two points. If i sailed 1 mile north and 1 mile east, i made good a course of 045. Or, if i tried to sail course 200 but was being set between 10 and 20°, then i might end up “making good a course” of say 214.

The distinctions between terms is not often critical, but may help to clarify some communications.

As we use the term here is it essentially a derived GPS function when it comes to real values. Otherwise we are only estimating it.
