This was a really good article, Weird History! Speaking of tacos, everyone knows about Jack In The Box’s (in)famous tacos, but not enough talk about the history of the restaurant. While Jack was always the mascot (except in the 80s), it wasn’t until the 1970s that he became a full-fledged character. He also had a group of friends: Onion Ring Thing, Hamburgermeister, Small Fry, Secret Sauce Agent, and The Shakes (a milkshake band). They were called the Jack In The Box Bunch and had a TON of merch during the 70s. The most popular were the bendable buddies. Another tidbit: the JITB Bunch were voiced by Paul Winchell, better known as Tigger from Winnie The Pooh. Honestly, Jack In The Box’s history in general is interesting ( it was briefly renamed Monterey Jack’s in the 80s), but I find not enough people talk about Jack In The Box’s 70s characters and ads. I worked as a Mgr at Taco Bell for about 4 yrs in my early 20s. When I 1st started, we cooked and seasoned the ground beef. About halfway thru, we started getting the boil bags of the precooked/preseasoned meat. We also cut and cooked the nacho chips, taco shells, pizza shells, salad bowls and cinnamon twists. Good times. Also when Taco Bell first opened in my neighborhood, on the menu board, they included a pronunciation key after each item that my friends and I thought was hysterical. Things like: Burrito (burr-EE-toe). They also had an item that was basically a sloppy joe (tie to that previous article) but with their taco meat on it. It was called the Bell Beefer. I ordered it once almost on a dare and could barely order it without laughing. It wasn’t around long, probably because they were wasting too many hamburger buns. And finally – no mention of the Taco Salad? That was around for a long time, because if you put the word “salad” on it, it must be healthier, right? Basically the same ingredients as everything else but in a large almost open clamshell taco shell. They briefly tried a seafood taco salad that didn’t last long at all. Then there was the discontinuation and return of the Mexican Pizza. Again, you could easily do a second article on Taco Bell to cover all of these things and others.
I’m glad to see Taco Bell is finally making a come back here in Australia. They tired about 20 odd years, under the Tricon branding, by joining with KFC. It failed and Taco Bell exited the market only a year or so later. I feel the pricing and limited menu didn’t help either. In 1998 when I was 19 years old I worked graveyard shift for a new Texaco gas station in Fairview, Oregon on the weekends. They had an A&W and Taco Bell built into the station. I lived in Mexico (including Monterrey) and was told thar Taco Bell was banned there. Many Mexicans feel insulted by the gringo taco. The negative effect of TB (not tuberculosis) on Mexican food is that the chain takes real names of Mexican foods and then recreates some similar tasting abomination that does not resemble the real food. Most Americans (and Canadians) don’t know what a real chalupa, gordita or quesadilla is. Most people around the world thinks that the quesadilla (thanks to Taco Bell) is cheese melted between tortillas when it is more like a stretched footlong taco filled with meat, veggies, cheese and topped with squash flowers. I lived in Monterey; and ate at every mall food court in that City; and I don’t think that Dairy Queen exists in thar City anymore. I probably walked by the location where it used to stand.

I ate at that taco bell in Guantanamo as soon as they built it. Since it was a military installation, my family worked there and i grew up on that island. Was nice to see some actual places from the US come down there. Those were the days. We had Subway, A&W, Taco Bell and Mcdonalds in terms of fast food.
Taco Bell’s quality has improved so much over the years. I remember growing up in the 90s and the quality as well as the amount of meat and cheese they would put on the tacos would be a joke. It was basically a lettuce taco with meat and cheese flavoring. And if you got it with no lettuce, the amount wouldn’t be any different. Needless to say that is not the case these days and sometimes I even prefer TB over regular “authentic” Mexican food. It also has the best app/rewards program of any fast food place IMO. As well as the best prices. Could easily feed yourself full for under $10. That sadly isnt the case with many other fast food options these days.

I’m sorry. I was a Taco Bell employee in the late 1970s. That beef was real beef. Locally sourced and weighed before and after cooking to guarantee its fat content. Only thing added was a spice packet Taco Bell branded. Pinto beans in bags. Cooked I pressure cookers with salt lard and water. Taco shells were fried onsite daily. My first job there. All the produce was sliced and diced on site. Even the cheese was in 40lb blocks. Locally sourced and grated daily on site. That poor Hobart ran day and night keeping everything stocked.

For the life of me, I absolutely adore Taco Bell. So much so, last week, I was getting off a 15 hr sound tech job and then the hour drive back home for something to eat, decided on Wendy’s. One family member worked at a Taco Bell in mid 70’s. She had to stir the beans cooking in a big pot. when it was time, she had to mash the beans using an electric drill. There was a wall near the pot, and it had crumbling plaster. That crumbled plaster got into the mashed beans. A customer broke a tooth, sued and won. Strangely, the store manager never fixed the crumbled plaster wall. An employee put some cardboard over the broken wall. This is the level of restaurant cleanliness and safety before Yum took over. Not quite. I’m at another location, sitting at a table, trying to enjoy my Taco Bell. Of all the spaces in the dining area, an employee is sweeping, stirring up dirt and dust. Right under my chair, etc. I start coughing. I said please come back after I leave, and employee does. I leave. I look over where the other employees are preparing food. There are little mounds of swept dust near them. Yuck
I am Canadian and I remember those Johnny Cash commercials in the 90s. At that time, ATM machines were actually pretty rare and I only seen a few in my life. After the Johnny Cash commercials, I thought that every ATM machine was called a Johnny Cash the same way that a toilet was called a Johnny on the spot. I remember calling ATM machines Johnny Cash for years thinking if that was the real name for them!
In the 90s or early 00s, they had a bacon cheeseburger burrito that was awesome — of course, anything with bacon automatically becomes better. Taco Bell hasn’t been the same for me since they got rid of it. Also, I was surprised you didn’t include the short-lived “Border Lights” menu from around that same era — supposedly healthier, lower-calorie items. It didn’t last long, but I remember the ads with Robert Stack — then host of Unsolved Mysteries — who would narrate the ads like it was an episode of the show. Things like “The calories were gone . . . but where did they go?” They also ran ads with Charlie Sheen narrating and talking about “pepper jack cheese.” You could easily do a Part 2 of this article with things that weren’t in this one.
The first Taco Bell in our town was built in the 70’s and looked like a little Mexican building. My dad told me they even had a guy that would deliver on bicycle. That place closed down and a new TB was built next door and then the old place turned into a Charlie’s Chicken then a Subway. It is still a subway still today.
Another partially failed promotion was the Star Wars Episode 1 drink toppers. One of the toppers was Jar Jar Binks. Not many wanted the Jar Jar topper. I worked for Ameriserve, later McLane, who delivered food and supplies to the Tricon/Yum brands restaurants. We had so many cases of Jar Jar toppers left over after the promotion that we force shipped them to the restaurants, not allowing refusals. Restaurant managers were very angry with the practice, and many simply threw the cases of Jar Jar toppers in the trash.
Taco Bell tacos are OK and I like them, but I’ve been spoiled by the taquerias in Texas, and “The Mighty Taco” that at least used to be open for business in Buffalo, NY. My memory is sketchy, so it was filled in as I got older, but we basically got what looked like a smear of meat, a dob of sour cream and some bits of lettuce while my dad had two whole jalapeno slices. We threw them in the trash and walked out and I think we stopped at a Sobey’s or something and bought some bread, dip, fruit and veggies. They didn’t open a Taco Bell here in Malaysia until 2021, and even then it was a single location pretty far from where I lived at the time. Wasn’t until like March of 2022 that they opened one near me and I finally got to go to one. I don’t know if it’s because we have much stricter food quality and safety laws here, but it was honestly pretty good.

It’s funny that Taco Bell’s first location was in Downey because if you drive down Firestone Blvd you’ll see a dozen taco/bionicos spots every mile and even a Portos (Cuban bakery). The majority of the people eating at that location are most certainly not Mexican. The American food that identifies as food from another country just like Panda Express and many others. McDonalds, Taco Bell, In-N-Out all starting right next to each other and Del Taco 50 miles away all around the same time.
the problem with fast food is that it is getting smaller in portion size and larger in price and most of the costs of running the businesses are so expensive even the business owners cannot find creative ways to stay in business. the food court at the mall has lost almost half the kiosks there including the taco bell. between rent and food cost it is really killing some locations off. my friend has a taco bell near her still because it is attached to kfc but that location doesn’t seem to have as many specials for taco bell as they do for kfc so i am not sure if that is taco bell not having sales now or if it is just that location. all i want is to see things come down in price so people can afford to enjoy things like this again.
I understand that Taco Bell became a very big success. One thing I don’t understand. Why did they remove the Bell Beefer? The only ingredient that it added, was a steamed hamburger bun. Everybody I knew, loved the Bell Beefer. They will never convince me that it wasn’t a popular item. I truly miss the original Taco Bells. We used to go to the Downey location. But once they opened the Huntington Park location on Florence, it was within walking distance, so that became our favorite. The other one that must have made a ton of money, was the one across the street from Bell High School on Atlantic. That thing was flooded with kids everyday after 3pm.
