Is there a cruise ship port in Georgia?
On the east coast of the United States in the historic and vibrant cruise port of Savannah, Georgia, separated by neighboring South Carolina by the Savannah River. The height of southern culture, the city may be smaller than you think: its 145,000 residents are ever-proud to show off the area’s heritage. Settled in 1733 by British colonists, it remained one of the few cities in the south whose antebellum charm and architecture remained intact after the Civil War. Book and movie fans may also think of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, in which Savannah was as much a character as any of the humans. It’s an excellent city for walking, and the Historic District (around one square mile) provides excellent self-guided audio tours or tours with a guide for a more interactive adventure. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Savannah, Georgia:
- The mother church of Savannah’s Roman Catholic Diocese, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was built in 1873
- its interior decoration took an extra 13 years. While it’s lovely from the outside, the massive inside is especially beautiful, thanks to the stained glass windows and immense pipe organ.
- At the edge of the Historic District is Forsyth Park, highlighted by a fantastic fountain trees draped in Spanish moss. It’s an excellent place to sit for a spell, relax, and people-watch
- you might even come across an artist (or several) displaying their wares.
- For more of Savannah’s unique atmosphere, visit Bonaventure Cemetery. There are several southern people of note buried here among the artful stones and statues, such as musician Johnny Mercer and writer Conrad Aiken. Its website describes the cemetery as “Where Death and Beauty Meet,” and that’s an apt statement indeed.
- Anyone who knows anything about Savannah is aware it’s supposedly very haunted. So finding a ghost tour is no difficult task here
- there are guides here to expose you to the paranormal in the cemetery, on a pub crawl, on a tour by trolley, and, of course, by candlelight (if you’re there after dark).
