Even though the chicken is more at Costco, it is much more convenient. It comes as 6 connected packages you can cut to separate and they freeze well in the thick packaging. If you don’t use the Sam’s package all at once you need to take the time and whatever bags, foil or wrap and break it into more usable sizes.

The Costco warehouse is cleaner and less crowded. Wish list — an app that would allow you to select the stores you normally shop at, then tell you which store has the lowest price.

The rotisserie chickens are bigger at Costco than the smaller ones at Sams .. the scan and go at Sams is nice.. Costco moves their items around the store constantly and doing so from keeping people bored— ie they seem to put random things on sale too (here and there) which makes one go into their store more often.. ❤️

I’ve been shopping at Costco for 28 years. Two weeks ago, I went there and spent $500. – and saved $25. with their coupons. I also do a lot of shopping on-line — and I rarely have to return anything. There’s a Sam’s Club 5 minutes from my home – I walked around the store and felt very uncomfortable. Costco is 10 minutes away — and shopping there always makes me happy. Great Quality Products, Easy Returns, Cashiers are always helpful and put the products in my cart for me – as I’m “old.” Many times, I have one of their workers walk the cart to my car and unload it. I currently have both but still prefer Sam’s because of the Scan and Go feature as well as the plus membership which allows me to shop as early as 8am. Costco is always packed even right when they open their doors, but going to Sam’s at 8am has been my go to and it’s never packed at that time. The thing Costco has that I prefer is their frozen section as they have more variety of items and they also have a lot of snacks. However, I did find a good amount of Sam’s products to be cheaper that I usually buy on a regular basis.

Although I don’t have a personal membership at Costco, I do know several people who do. The shopping 🛒 🛍 experience at Sam’s Club is better to me because they have it where you can check yourself out using their app. This makes such a huge difference to me because I can check myself out as I shop which means when I’m finished, I can go straight to the door where they verify my items and reviews my purchases. A huge win for Sam’s in my book! 😊

Love your vids! But this vid just reinforced what I was once told many years ago… If you join a warehouse club JUST JOIN ONE the differences in cost savings from one club to the other is negated by the membership fees for the second club. So join the the one that is most convenient for your shopping and don’t look back!

I prefer access to as many organic products as possible, so I do the bulk of my shopping at Whole Foods and ALDIS. I used to be a Costco member when I lived in California. There were multiple Costco’s close to my home but no Sam’s Clubs. Now I live in Knoxville TN. The only local Costco is a 40 minute drive from my home, but Sam’s Club is only 5 minutes away. Plus the Costco here for some reason doesn’t stock any of the items I routinely purchased in California. And Sam’s membership fees are cheaper. I switched to Sam’s shortly after moving here. I shop at both Sam’s and Costco. I have my favorites at both but for paper products Kirkland is way better than Member Mark. Also I believe you get more product, i.e. more sheets in both the paper towels and the toilet tissue with Kirkland. Based on the cost you’re putting for the soda I’d like to shop at your Sam’s or Costco it’s way more here in Southern California than what you are quoting.

Price is just one factor, qualities is also important factor for consideration and product comparison. Which warehouse carry more values and durabilities? I feel Costco product quality is much better than Sams as well as their generous return policies. Do you end up consuming more for the similar items sold for cheaper price? I have been to both and I feel Sam carry lower quality products to Costco.

Costco Fan here! Ultimately the products they sell are a little spendy, but the quality checks they probably have to pass are second to None. I used to be a Target fan, the products they sell are low quality and marketed to those who have too much money to throw around, but Thank You for helping in my decision to renew that higher-up membership cost, it’s been so worth it..Plus, the Food Court is accommodating and has a small but amazing selection, and people who don’t have a lot of money or somone to cook for them don’t need a membership to use the Pharmacy or Food court. Plus, major holiday sales save you hundreds if not thousands for big purchases.

I would like to know price wise who the winner was, meaning how many dollars would Sam’s cost vs Costco. I love these types of content! I live near the giant Costco in Salt Lake City, Utah and across the street is Sam’s. I have items that I prefer from each of them. The pesto is the exact same bottle and $3 cheaper at Sam’s.

I have both memberships. I prefer Sam’s for a couple reasons. I like the Members Mark toilet paper better- I’m a toilet paper snob. I find their sales are pretty significant. Generally, Sam’s is cheaper for the things I buy. The only thing keeping me at Costco was the diapers. Their diapers are superior to ANY other diaper on the market (I worked at a daycare, I’ve used it all). The sinker for me to shop 90% of the time at Sam’s… they take American Express! My Amex is a 5% back on groceries which overall makes it wayyyyyy more worth it!

I have arthritis in my knees, at 41 years old. I use Voltaren gel for pain relief when they’re extra painful. Sam’s Club has the best price of anywhere, even vs great value Walmart generic. Two large tubes and one small one for $36.98. Got a 5 quart Kitchenaid Mixer with bonus bakers bundle (extra smaller bowl, beater, and a scraper) for $246.08 almost 2 years ago. Ended up giving it to my stepdaughter because I found out I was diabetic and don’t need baked goods around to tempt me. 🤣 I find super cheap clothes there sometimes.

The huge problem with Sam’s Club, it’s owned by Walmart, a truly horrible corporation. Walmart makes sure to hire lots of part-timers, that way, they don’t have to provide health insurance, in turn, many of their workers have to apply for Medicaid. Costco provides health insurance and overall, they treat their workers much better, Costco workers earn an actual living wage.

Intresting note as someone who is an avid egg white purchaser, when Costco changed the packaging of there egg whites they also changed the weighing method. Its no longer 16 fluid oz but rather 16 net wt oz. Meaning 16oz with the carton weight itself. You only get 14oz of egg whites now per individual carton. Don’t be fooled. I measure every cartoon and I go through 14 cartoons a week. Its 14oz. Kirkland is really cutting corners now so you have to pay attention to everything, especially if you see new packaging

Thank you for this article Matt! I’ve had both memberships for a long time and I’d say that each wholesale warehouse has their advantages. I constantly compare the fluctuating prices at both. But, I do notice that Costco does push their brand more than Sam’s Club’s Members Mark. Sam’s seems to have more name brand items on deck. Also when it comes to “shopping experience” I’d say I like Sam’s clubs app better. They have that Scan and Go! feature that costco needs so badly. Gets you out of the store fast. You don’t need your card to get gasoline either, they have a QR code scanner on the app that connects to the pump and you just “scan & go” for that too. I love Costco for mostly bigger warehouses at times. Costco needs to have self-checkout at all locations and they need to fix the issues with their horrible app and very long lines to get fuel. Food court, Sam’s has a bigger selection of food especially with pizza toppings, and more drink options at the beverage bar. Also when you search for a regular item like eggs or milk on the Costco App it doesn’t say if the item is in stock and doesn’t give you the price. If you call them they won’t give you the price over the phone. Costco wins for having the business centers though, with a bigger size quantity of certain items and more bottled drink selections, larger quantities of meat in case you need to feed a large crowd. Overall it’s hard to choose!

Extra Bonus…… Costco for rental cars. I work in the industry & except for corporate discounts Costco has (almost always) THE best rates. You must book online through the Costco site but great rates, no prepayment required; meaning you can always change your res or rebook it if the rate lowers, and you get a free driver too (paperwork is required at rental counter for BOTH drivers). That’s alot of savings. I’ve also gotten great cruise rates with them also.

I was really surprised by your findings in this article. I belong to both Sams and Costco. I know stores in different locations price differently, but of the products I purchase, I have never found Sams to be cheaper on anything than Costco. Additionally, the quality of Costco products is far superior to Sams. The reason I keep my Sams membership is because they carry some products I want that Costco no longer carries.

If we’re talking about overall shopping experience, at least where I live, I prefer Sam’s. Both my local Sam’s and Costco are usually pretty busy. And becuase Costco doesn’t label their aisles so you know where everything is, I feel like it contributes to the chaos of shoppers going back and forth across the store and it makes it harder to navigate around. But I agree with others that Costco has more variety of items to choose from. I keep both memberships so I can have access to cheaper gas from either store also.

First off…I like your articles. We shop at both warehouses. We do comparisons prior to purchasing. What I noticed about your article is that in several cases it’s apple to oranges. Ex: Trash bags. Garden variety (1.4 mil) at Costco vs Contractor (3.0 mil) bags at Sams. We never do comparisons the way you are. We compare price per ounce. Price per square foot. Price per load is a very misleading number as is price per roll. I could go on but y’all get the gist. Thanks for the great articles.

Just wanted to point out that you compared black cartridges at costco to color cartridges at sams. color are normally more expensive than black, so not quite a like-item comparison. I go to both, personally. 2 items I found drastically different, is the peeled garlic cloves. $9 at sams and $15 at costco. and then also new potatoes were $6 at sams and $12 at costco. I’ve worked at Costco…. I whole heartedly HATED The management. We were treated like poop, understaffed. Over worked. Pushed way to hard. Talked. down to. Never knew your schedule. When you were assigned to do something on the schedule.. it never was the case. They just threw the majority of the staff on boring things…. All day long. No variety. They favored the lifers.. Why would i commit 5-10 years of my life to a modern slave labor. Before i begin to be treated less like garbage. No thanks. It felt good leaving. During my last week . The store manager said that is a waste of time to switch and go work somewhere else. And why in the world i want to be a mechanic. When i could just put my time there…. Fast forward 4/ish years.. ( where I’m at now) I went shopping there and was curious as to whom was still there. I saw some of the same sour faces. Still collecting carts. Still look stressed and unhappy. While me, i finished my diesel mechanic school. Also got a welding certificate. Moved up about 3-4 times. Went from literally almost getting hit by cars collecting shopping carts for 8 hours a day. Being called “the help” by pretentious customers. Being told my 5. Minute break was too soon and i can’t make small talk with my co workers… Can’t look at my phone for the time, but if I’m late for my scheduled lunch. I’ll get written up…..Etc, on and on and on. To now … I have my own desk. Computers. Laptop.i get respect. I get a 2500 tool allowance .250.00 Boot allowance evey year.

An advantage for Sam’s Club…more free shipping and curb side pickup. Their app is easier to use too. Sam’s will have choices of pickup, shipping, or delivery. Costco does not show prices in store and online prices are higher than in store. When prices are similar, I order from Sam’s since they participate in Cashback apps…Drop, Rakuten, etc. Sometimes I can double dip those.

With a score of 34 to 30, and 21 items at “dead even”, your price comparison was pretty much a “wash”! I guess that it comes down to what one’s personal favorite might be, and what your round trip transportation cost to either is! In my case, living in the Jacksonville area, Sam’s is substantially closer to me than Costco, and Sam’s is usually less crowded, although I do also enjoy Costco! As a suggestion, you might do a comparison between the two on car tires and the like! Again, Matt….thank you for your diligence!

As far as the overall winner it really depends on what you usually purchase. We do not have a Costco in Thibodaux, La. but we do have a Sam’s Club about 15 miles away in Houma La. Also the membership at Sam’s Club I believe is cheaper than Costco’s membership. I am curious as to gas prices also. As far as alcohol, wine, and beer it depends on the deal that is being offered to the clubs. They can go 6% over cost as allowed by law. I do know I love my Sam’s Club. In my area, Blueberries at co Cosco 2.99, Strawberries $3.99, Kitchen garbage bags $12.99, Gallon of milk $2.99, pasture-raised eggs $7.99 for 24 eggs, three packs of Lysol 8.99. Cosico has a better selection of organic and kosher products. Tuna cans 5.99 kosher salt 1.89 oranges 6.99. Prices vary by location, I see. Walmart spends more money on products in other parts of the country than in my state.

Some of the reasons I switched to Sam’s from Costco membership price (and Sam’s basically gives the cost of the membership back to you). location, Sam’s is a lot closer to my home than Costco. Sam’s carries more of the items I am likely to buy, however, I wish they carried more of the organic foods and I would love both clubs to carry a lot more of the low carb/keto items.

I have had memberships to both. The selection at Costco includes better quality products and higher-end products. I used to have my prescriptions refilled at Sam’s Club. I would call in and request a refill and then show up a few days after and when I went to the counter to pick it up they would tell me they were “finishing up my refill request” and it would be another hour. After this happened to me several times, it became clear that they were always running behind and they were starting to refill my prescription after I arrived at the pharmacy counter. I joined Coscto, which had a warehouse just down the block, and have not been back to Sam’s Club since then.

I have both memberships. There are things that I prefer at both. Mostly though and honestly Costco is more to my liking. There is only one Sam’s club near me but at least half a dozen Costcos. And quality, I have to say I am going with Costco. Costcos return policy is the best. If I have to choose one membership it will be Costco always.

Love both stores but Sam’s gets more of my business cause of Scan and Go inside their warehouses and at the pumps, while Costco has longer lines at the registers and gas stations. Main reason for membership at both places is cause of the gasolina. I drive around 5k+ miles monthly for my job and gasoline is decently priced at both stores.

It’s the tires for me, the only reason I still pay my sams membership is the discount on tires, if you buy at the right time they’re a considerable a better deal at sams, also at my Costco location in the city there’s less brands to choose from (tires, we’re talking tires) for everything else Costco is the winner. I live in the Midwest and my Sams is in a suburb (30-40 min drive) and my Costco is in the city (20 min drive from home, 5 min drive from work)

In the Pittsburgh area, there are only 3 Costco stores. None of which are anywhere close to being convenient to me. I know that the Costco membership costs more, and I have found that most of the items I buy from Sam’s Club, aren’t sold at Costco. So Sam’s is the winner for me. Pittsburgh just got it’s first 2 BJ’s Wholesale Clubs, which again aren’t convenient for me to use.

I have both memberships for the first time. While I love all the organic items at Costco, Sam’s wins hands down for paper towels and toilet paper and trash bags. Their quality is so much better than Costco and you get more for your money. It would be a tough situation to try to pick. I will probably only renew Sam’s because of what I buy and the price of the membership is so very much cheaper!

I noticed you reviewed Sam’s clear plastic cutlery. I personally use the Sam’s 600 count spoons & forks you purchase separately. Having 5 kids & 4 still at home it’s worth buying Member Mark plastic spoons, MM forks, MM paper plates but in the 300 count 8.5 inch size, MM napkins, MM paper towels, MM scented garbage bags (I have no idea how my kids generate so much garbage & it’s not from their plates and cutlery😂), but most importantly I definitely get MM toilet paper! We easily go thru 2 of those in a month and sometimes need a 3rd one. Thank you for doing this because I’ve seen so many neat finds from social media people I follow that shop at Costco. We don’t have one remotely close to us so I felt like I was missing out. But not so much now. Thank you!!!

Car battery purchase paid for my membership COSTCO won for me! $75 over $130. AND I got an Interstate. TRIGGER WARNING: In my experience Costco employees hold more college degree than do Sams. Why does that matter? They problem solve faster, less steps, find a solution to getting you in and out faster. Ask a question at Sam’s, CRICKETS. Only one staff person on duty is capable of rising to the occasion for a solution. My Costco membership expired, and I was approaching a long return line waiting to re-new, a clerk was addressing everyone in line and redirecting them like an air traffic controller. She recognized my car battery core exchange and plucked me from the back of the wait line to the front of the auto counter, I didn’t even come to a complete stop to wait in the return line! AMAZING. Labor day weekend the parking lot was jammed, not one single empty space, and yet I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. BOOYA. Costco WIN WIN!

I wish there was a Costco in my area but there isn’t; so Sam’s it is. I think the closest Costco is over 3 hrs away. I do wish there was a Costco closer. Also unless you’re going to use olive oil very quickly; it’s better to buy it in a dark bottle since light can break it down; changing the taste. Also check to see what brands have quality olive oil since if you’re going to pay a nice chunk of change; you want to be sure you’re getting good quality olive oil.

Matt I think you’re great and I always watch your Costco monthly suggestions. I have both Costco and Sam’s clubs memberships. Here in South Carolina I do favor Costco but Sam’s has more name brands. While I was in Texas Sam’s was the only game in town and I liked it. On this article many times if Costco is 1 or 2 cents cheaper… you say Costco wins that category or item. When Sam’s is 1 or 2 cents cheaper… you say they’re comparable… ???

I’ve eaten both and Costco’s chicken breasts are way better than Sam’s. The Costco rotisserie chickens are Perdue chickens. I also feel Kirkland products are better than Sam’s brand (I can’t even remember the name since I canceled my membership). I drive 35 minutes for Costco when Sam’s is 10 minutes from me. The one thing that annoy me about Sam that a lot of people don’t know is their plus membership. It offer free pick up and shipping which use to be part of the basic memebership but now it not. Costco base membership still have free shipping which people need to consider if they shop online a lot. You get $25 off clothes if yu buy 5 online which is awesome.

For the checkout experience alone Sam’s wins hands down. A trip to Costco causes me so much anxiety and being forced to go through a Checkout line is horrendous. For produce I prefer Sam’s. Ever Costco I’ve been to lately has been lacking in quality produce and the packaging for items such as Apples, potatoes and onions is not ideal.

to problems with some of your comparisons; 1) I believe that stores can not sell postage stamps at a profit. The only time I’ve seen a difference in total coast was because of a shipping and handling charge. 2) You compared table salt and kosher slat (what you showed in the article). Kosher salt is always more expensive that table salt. Still loved the article.

Other than the fact that many of the sourced Kirkland products are from superior products (this is especially so in the food products, alcohol, and other consumables), the Costco gas station and Tire Center are their grand slams. Not just in financial savings for an actual individual product, but for the ancillary service behind it. In the case of gasoline the additives that they put in the fuel which make it a highly ranked TopTier gas. Kirkland fresh meats are also an incredible deal. Iowa beef. What I find Sam’s to have are some Walmart carried products that I like. Whether it’s a deodorant or a variety with soaps… They carry a lot of more “common” products. By the way, when you compare with diapers, you should look at who makes them. I believe Kirkland is supplied by a major US manufacturer and the Sam’s in my county had diapers that were imported from Central America.

I have been a member of Sam’s Club since the 1980’s but I am giving my membership up soon in October of 2022. I had enough of their Bull Shit. Sam’s is now charging a fee for Club Pickup no matter how much money you spend that even at $4 will add up in a years time causing your cost of goods to cost you more. They have become Greedy. Their answer to me just buy their one hundred dollar plus membership soon going up if I don’t want to pay the new $4 pickup fee. The benefit for me a Senior Citizen today has been taken away being I can’t walk Sam’s Club anymore like I did when I was much younger. I feel discriminated against now as a Senior Citizen at Sam’s so I will soon give up my membership. Not only that Sam’s is charging a pickup fee it doesn’t always have the items anymore that I purchased in the past. At least purchasing online to pick up I knew right away if the items I needed were in stock for pickup another plus before I commit to a 25 mile round trip there and back to find out they were out of stock on the items I wanted. Sam’s finally found a way for me to see that I don’t really need them anymore. I refuse to pay a pickup fee. They lost my business. I now go over to Walmart more I find picking up my orders. At least there I don’t need to pay a membership fee and prices aren’t much different. The same bulk Olive Oil at Walmart was 42 cents more at Walmart but Walmart is only 1/3 the distance away from me then Sam’s Club with the high price of gasoline out there today.
