Buggery was a common practice on ships during long cruises, with sailors preferring it. In 1756, a naval court martial tried William Slade, carpenter of the Sheerness, for homoerotic crimes, specifically “sodomitical practices.” The British Royal Navy tradition consisted of Rum, buggery, and the lash, which is a significant aspect of gender ideology in maritime culture.

Burgency was first made a capital crime by Henry VIII in 1533, and naval buggery was specifically made a hanging offense in 1627. In 1806, there were more hangings in England, and the term buggery was used as a discreet and grave offense. Officers avoided accusing their comrades of engaging in homosexuality, making it impossible to judge the behavior of those who served in the navy.

The term buggery or sodomy was used as the term for committing sodomy on ships after being out at sea for more than 90 days. The term was used as a derogatory term for the navy, suggesting a connection to an older pederastic tradition. The punishment for committing buggery or sodomy was harsh, and the term was used as a warning against the consequences of such behavior.

In the 18th century, Britain entered a period of unprecedented brutality against sodomy and buggery, with Hubbard and Hynes being two of many individuals who were tried for their involvement in the law. The Royal Navy did not refer to itself as being built on rum, buggery, and the lash for giggles, but rather for the sake of maintaining a sense of order and respect for the traditions of the Royal Navy.

What is a baby’s head in Navy slang?

Snorkers is the nickname for Palethorpe’s pre-cooked tinned sausages. The nickname originated aboard World War II Royal Navy submarines, along with other culinary delights such as HITS (tinned herrings in tomato sauce) and Baby’s Heads (tinned steak and kidney pudding). Fresh food lasted only a few days aboard submarines so nearly everything was tinned.

Snorkers are mentioned in Nicholas Monsarrat’s novel The Cruel Sea as the favourite food of Lieutenant James Bennett, RNVR. Bennett is described as Australian, and the snorkers references attributed to him alone, which suggests a possible antipodean derivation of the word.

Terry Wogan often referred with relish to snorkers, a welcome part of the culinary delights (sometimes) served up for Sir Terry and his “team” on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show.

What did Ships Boys do?

Ship’s boys were usually aged between twelve and sixteen years. Some came from poor families, others who had been convicted of petty crimes or vagrancy were recommended by magistrates. They were at the bottom of the naval hierarchy and were tasked with such menial duties as cleaning the pigsties and hen coops.

• During periods of repair and/or wet and dry dock (when Guests are not on board), Bellboys may be required to operate the Reception desk, making announcements as required.

Why is it called a powder monkey?

Despite its shocking state, the vision was born, and the work began on planning the brewery and developing the brand. The name Powder Monkey relates to the boys who carried the gunpowder to the guns on board ships.

Having recruited Mark, our Head Brewer to the team, Andy & Mark spent many hours planning the working side of the brewery, specifying the equipment and ensuring it was as efficient and productive as possible.

Roll forward to July 2021 and the new facility was up and running and the first beers brewed. The brewery building contains the production facility as well as a visitor centre, shop and tasting bar.
