Cruising in bad weather can lead to seasickness, which can cause discomfort and even cancellation of your cruise. To avoid this, take immediate steps to ensure your safety, such as taking over-the-counter medications like Dramamine or Bonine, using an acupressure wristband, or applying a patch. Packing options and pre-trip planning can help prepare for any weather conditions.
If a storm is threatening the area a ship was scheduled to sail to, cruise lines will reroute the ships if the forecast is severe enough. While cruise ships can typically outrun most storms, passengers may still experience rough seas as their ship skirts the edges of a weather system. Ports usually aren’t closed for more than 24 hours, 48 if it’s a slow storm or if there’s damage to assess. When bad weather keeps a ship from entering a scheduled stop at a port, it will skip that port and you get a sea day.
Cruise lines are well-versed in ways to ensure passenger safety and provide unlimited options. Effective solutions to seasickness include acupressure wristbands, antihistamines, Dramamine, and the Transderm Scope. If you didn’t bring any with you, the Transderm Scope can be used. Cruise ships have thick steel hulls that can withstand the ravages of a storm, and the vessel might list to one side and then the other, in a motion.
To avoid bad weather, change your itinerary ahead of time and consider staying informed about potential weather conditions. By doing so, you can enjoy your cruise trip without worrying about the potential consequences of bad weather.
📹 What Happens When a Cruise is Threatened by a Hurricane (uncommon knowledge)
Have you ever wondered what happens if a cruise is affected by a hurricane or storm? In this video I share some uncommon …
How windy is too windy for a cruise?
So many are curious about how windy is too windy for boating. The answer obviously depends on the size of a boat and the size of the waves, but in general, wind speeds over 20–33 knots (around 28–54 km/h) are considered too windy for boating. At this speed, almost all sizes of boats are greatly affected and smaller ones may even be in danger of capsizing.
The Effects of the Wind on Different Boats Out in the Water.
Some boats handle the wind much better than others do. Boats that have very high hulls and/or big flybridges, will be affected by the wind a lot more than boats that don’t. This is because the surface area on these boats will almost act as a sail which will catch a lot of the wind causing the boat to move accordingly.
What happens if it rains during my cruise?
There are some fun things to do, from bingo to shows to games and don’t forget the many food options.
And, yes, there’s a good chance that if it’s raining the water slides will be closed.
In fact, gusty wind alone can shut down water attractions. My best advice is to check the water park area often once the rain and/or wind subsides.
Utilize the kids’ camp. Traveling with children? The kids’ camp was a godsend for us on rainy days. Our kids camp staff was outstanding and kept the kids wanting to return.
There were no rainy-day stir crazy kids in our family. In fact, this option gave us adult time for relaxing and listening to live music in the bars. (Read about how kids’ camp on our Disney Cruise was the best thing since sliced bread!)
Can a cruise ship survive a tsunami?
A Cruise ship in port would get damaged and destroyed like any other ship in port when a tsunami hits. Tsunami, when they are out in the deep ocean, are not massive waves and walls of water. they are a large impulse wave of large wavelength and periodicity racing through the water at the speeds of a jet airliner.
Will they cancel a cruise due to weather?
Cruises don’t get cancelled due to bad weather or rough seas. The ship may skip a port due to weather ( including high winds at tender ports), strikes, civil unrest and ship maintenance issues.
Are cruises safe during thunderstorms?
There is absolutely nothing to worry about rain in any cruise ship or for that matter any big ship. You might want to stay indoors to stay dry or to avoid getting struck by lightning in a thunderstorm. Otherwise rain is never an issue. It is generally the seas that accompany a gale that always cause concern.
Is cruise ship air dry?
Onboard Dryness. When I lived on a cruise ship for 100 days, I discovered just how dry the air can be on a cruise ship. To prevent mold and reduce humidity, cruise ships are often overly air conditioned, which can leave you feeling dry in your cabin. This is similar to how an airplane feels if you’ve ever taken a long international flight.
Oddly enough, you’ll be experiencing the hot humidity outside while returning to a dry and very air conditioned cruise ship.
Prepare for your lips to feel chapped if you spend a lot of time in your cabin. Also, you might experience that your skin dries out. Your nose is also more dry, which can make you more susceptible to viruses and bacteria.
Are cruise ships safe in high winds?
Can a hurricane capsize a cruise ship?Theoretically, a hurricane with sustained winds of at least 74 mph, with high seas, could capsize a cruise ship, but cruise ships neither wait for or steer toward hurricanes to find out if they can stay afloat in them.
Can a cruise ship actually out-run a hurricane?According to NOAA, a hurricane’s average forward speed is about 11–12 mph (9.5–10.4 knots). The average speed of a modern cruise ship is about 20 knots (23 mph). So, yes, typically a cruise ship can out-run a hurricane, but cruise ships normally never try to out-race hurricanes. By constantly monitoring weather conditions they adjust their route to steer clear of them.
Won’t cruise ships encounter rough seas while running from hurricanes?Yes, cruise ships may encounter rough seas while avoiding hurricanes; however, modern cruise ships are fully capable of handling rough seas and have highly efficient stabilizers to prevent ships from rolling.
Is it safe to be on a cruise ship during a storm?
Can cruise ships withstand storms?. Cruise ships have thick steel hulls that can withstand the ravages of a storm. The vessel might list to one side, then the other, in a motion known as rolling. Alternatively, a forward movement might pitch down into the swells before rearing up again. None of this should cause concern, as every ship has been tested in simulated storm conditions. You might notice the swimming pool is emptied and outdoor decks closed off but, inside the ship, the well-trained crew knows what measures to enact to make passengers safe and comfortable.
What are cruise ships doing to protect themselves?. As operational safety is an absolute priority, cruise lines are increasingly one step ahead in forecasting bad weather. They have the latest meteorological equipment, as well as an arsenal of weather charts, satellite images of storm activity, and even computer models from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US. Royal Caribbean Group, as an example, has a “storm centre” at its Miami headquarters, where, during hurricane season, a wall of screens is monitored by the company’s chief meteorologist, James Van Fleet.
One man who’s been at the helm when nature throws a tantrum is Captain Dag Dvergastein. With five decades of experience sailing the globe with Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn and now, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Dvergastein has valuable insight. “Each ship is constructed to a class standard such as Lloyds or Bureau Veritas to certify safety,” he says. “Ships of all sizes will experience movement in heavy weather, but the larger the ship, the less the movement. Stabilisers minimise the rolling motion, thus maximising comfort.
When should you not go on a cruise?
The Caribbean is also popular with families, so going outside of the summer months can mean more availability and better fares – though ships are likely to be crowded during other school holidays like spring and winter breaks. Banks also recommended avoiding hurricane season, which runs from June through November.
