The American Sailing Association (ASA) offers a comprehensive range of sailing certifications, including Keelboat Sailing, Small Boat Sailing, Bareboat Cruising, and Multihull Sailing. The Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course is designed to provide sailing instructors with information on teaching more safely, effectively, and creatively. The course includes a 6-hour self-guided online course and a three-day, in-person session. To simplify the charter process and operate a vessel in compliance with EU Law, applicants must obtain a US Sailing International Proficiency Certificate.
The course covers cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety, and seamanship. The course is aimed at adults wanting to learn to sail, ideal for complete beginners, those who learned to sail years ago, or a conversion from yachting to sailing.
To sail in a destination, candidates must have one of the following certifications: ICC or RYA Day Skipper. Original license or certification must be submitted in advance. The 40-hour training course is crammed into four intense days, and Level One candidates must show proficiency in both sailing and teaching techniques, plus power.
The Start Sailing Course introduces beginners to the basics of sailing and is offered in our fleet of J80 Sportsyachts. The US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course is mandatory for anyone interested in teaching sailing at the US Sailing Center. Complete all 11 steps in the order listed to receive your Small Boat Instructor Level Certification.
