On a cruise, there are several foods and drinks that passengers should avoid, including scrambled eggs, old, congealed foods, green salads, and communal condiments. Scrambled eggs are the top food to avoid on a cruise, as they can be heavy on the stomach and may leave passengers feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. Green salads are a good option, as they are some of the freshest food on the ship.
Communal condiments, such as ketchup, can be found in the buffet station. However, it is important to avoid eating foods that have been triggers in the past or that you haven’t consumed before, as they can cause food poisoning on a cruise. French food, sugary drinks, pizza, daytime ice cream, buffet sushi, already-made eggs, burgers, and fries are also not recommended.
Unpasteurized foods, tap water, steak condiments and heavy sauces, seafood, sushi, and unpeeled fruits and vegetables that have not been washed can have harmful bacteria that can cause unpleasant symptoms like an upset stomach. Very spicy or bean-based dishes might not be the most practical choice when dining on a cruise.
In summary, while cruise lines offer a variety of food options, it is essential to avoid certain foods and drinks to ensure a pleasant voyage filled with delicious meals. By avoiding these potential pitfalls, passengers can enjoy the delights of cruise cuisine without any unwanted side effects.

📹 5 foods NOT to eat on a cruise
Cruise ships are a foodie’s heaven. There’s something for every craving, whether it’s late-night pizza, a juicy steak, seafood, …
Condiments, which contain vinegar, do not need to be refrigerated, even at home. Maybe they shouldn’t be out in the sun but people are way too obsessed with the condiments. Mayo, if homemade, does need refrigeration, due to eggs. Just use common sense, people. It’s that corn syrup in them that needs to go.
While tap water in poor countries is risky, the tap water on the ship is treated to be safe although it does have a chemical after taste. I will take a filter bottle or pitcher instead of having to buy bottled water on the ship. Agree, eggs on hot tray in buffet are lousy; I choose to get breakfast in the dining room on a sea day and the last morning.
Am I missing something here? Have been on many cruises and never heard of anyone ever having food poisoning from eating food on the ship. Norovirus yes and touching handles and serving utensils can be ify. I love the eggs every morning and yes the omelets are the best choice. Can’t afford the extra in speciality dining. Just say’n we enjoy cruising and maybe we are just stupid lucky never got sick nor saw any problems with other passengers. Fully agree when off the ship—–be careful what you eat or drink and always have wipes or something for your hands —- don’t bring something back to the ship your ship mates will not be happy.
The ketchup and mustard tip is actually spot on. I’ve seen people take a bite of their hotdog and then add more condiments while touching the nozzle to their food. It’s more the outside bacteria, not that the ketchup went bad, that causes stomach issues in some people. Kids are especially guilty of this. I saw one swipe the drippimg ice cream from a soft serve machine and stick their finger in their mouth and do it again. It was beyond disgusting and luckily a crew member saw it and shut down the machine for “cleaning”.
I am an infection control nurse. Like you, in the buffet, I wash my hands before dining, and after I have my food. I believe that the issue with the condiments, ice cream, etc., is that everyone does not wash their hands. It is difficult to change people’s mindset. Since the Civil War, Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton, have educated people on infection control. It’s the 21st century, and people for some reason do not know, understand, or implement handwashing techniques.
Some buffet still have self serve with ladles and serving spoons, handled by everybody. Make sure you sanitise your hands after taking your food and before eating. Better still, sanitise your cutlery unless it is an individually wrapped disposable. Wipe down every knob and handle in your cabin as soon as you get on board, including the TV remote.
I’ve seen crew filling condiments from large containers. Where these containers are stored if doubtful. Soft serve ce cream doesn’t have cream. It’s emulsified palm oil filled with sugar. Specially dining is expensive. Go for it, and thank you for subsidising my cruise. Along with those on excursions, 😂😂 gamblers and drinkers.
My wife and I cruise celebrity, I have not seen self serve ice cream.they have a person serving it to you. The one thing Ive learned is yes do not eat the scrambled eggs, I usually go to the breakfast station and order fresh omelette, hot dogs and hamburgers the outside grill they are of poor quality. Condiment area, I see an employee wiping down the station frequently, but it is good to use a napkin to get what you need. In the dinning room is usually cold but the down side is your food gets cold quickly. Ive also learned that even tho the temperature is cold in the dinning room they don’t always keep the food warm and by the time get you food drink the food is usually cold.
So much wrong with this content. 1. Ketchup (and other condiments) are shelf stable, meaning they do not have to be refrigerated. We refrigerate them at home because we use them so slowly over time. Cruise have a tremendous number of people they are serving, so the condiments change over quickly. Nobody is getting food poisoning from ketchup. 2. Ships aren’t bringing in local water for you to drink. It’s highly filtered and perfectly safe to drink water onboard a cruise ship. 3. I’ll give you the eggs are better fresh. 4. Most cruise ships serve you at the ice cream machines for this very reason. Someone is usually stationed at each machine.
Ive been on 17 cruises none of these issues have arisen on four different cruise lines, princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and celebrity. I think it’s a bit of a nervous Nellie attitude, they’re very very scrutinized on their hygiene practices. Poor hygiene practices will bar these cruise lines from being able to visit their main source of income, the US ports. Going to specialty is a waste of hard earned money. Why would you want to do that when you have the main dining room with four or five options at every meal, the buffet available always, not to mention snack fruit places like the pizzeria or the burger joint. Going to the special dining is a waste.
These workers work very hard everyday ….They start at 6am and dont finished until 11pm …..Most of them fr diff country, 6 months on, 6 months off …They dont get to see their family 6 months ….They dont make much money, but where they come fr, its alot for them ….but ..They happy that they have a job….Where they come fr, very poor and cant find job.
