HKSF is organizing Level 1 and 2 Dinghy courses for individuals aged 12 or above, based on the adult dinghy scheme. These courses are designed to help beginners learn sailing on a dinghy, which is a small boat between six and twenty feet long with a shallow draught. Sailing a dinghy requires basic knowledge and skills, such as essential sailing techniques.
Sailing on a dinghy is a great way to start sailing, especially for single-handers, as they are lightweight and easy to rig and launch. Rigging and launching a sailing dinghy may seem daunting at first, but with a step-by-step guide, you can confidently set sail in no time. People of all ages can participate in dinghy and keelboat sailing, and it becomes more than just a sport due to its sociability.
RYA offers dinghy courses for kids aged 8 to 12 and up, with the Competent Crew course being the best introduction to sailing. The youngest group learns about rowing around in a group from around age 4 or younger, while the oldest is now 5 and knows how to pull the ropes in and which side to sit on.
The Start Yachting and Competent Crew courses are suitable for children aged 8 and 12, respectively. The minimum age for the RYA Day Skipper course is 16, and courses typically run over a series of weekends. Courses will start in the spring.
To get started in dinghy sailing, a comprehensive guide provides the key information needed to kick off your new hobby. If one person enjoys adrenaline, they can enjoy a dinghy in 18 knot winds, while those who don’t need adrenaline can attend with a friend or adult known to them.
