What is St. Thomas best known for?

St. Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles, was known for his doubts about the Resurrection of Jesus and his demand for physical proof of the wounds of Christ’s Crucifixion. His name, “Thomas, called the Twin”, means “twin” in Aramaic and Greek. He was also known as Judas Thomas by the Syrians.

Thomas’s devotion to Jesus is evident in John 11:5-16, where he refused to let the disciples go to Judaea to die with him. At the Last Supper, Thomas was unable to understand Jesus’ message of coming again and taking him to himself. His question about how to know the way led Jesus to reveal that he was the way, truth, and life.

The phrase “doubting Thomas” developed from his request for physical proof of the Resurrection, which was fulfilled when Christ reappeared and asked Thomas to touch his wounds. Thomas’ sudden realization of truth made him the first person to explicitly acknowledge Jesus’ divinity.
