The Cost Of A Medical Evacuation From Mexico To The United States?

Medical evacuation is a necessary step in medical care when a person suffers a catastrophic illness, accident, cardiac event, stroke, or other serious injury. The cost of a medevac flight or ambulance depends on the location and the type of insurance coverage. The average medical emergency evacuation within North America costs just over $25,000. However, the cost can increase significantly depending on the location and medical condition.

Medevac flights from Mexico to the United States or Canada may cost between US$25,000 and US$30,000. If you are not covered by a medical evacuation plan, the cost can be even higher. The Centers for Disease Control states that medical evacuation from resource-poor areas to high-quality facilities can be expensive.

The total cost of medevac varies by location, ranging from $25,000 for transport within North America to ≥$250,000 for more distant and remote locations. Medical evacuation can cost $10,000 and up, depending on your location and medical condition. Medicare does not provide for medical evacuation coverage, but premium medical evacuation insurance plans are available. For example, the cost of medical evacuation from Mexico to Canada or the United States could range from USD 25,000-60,000 for an air ambulance. Most medical evacuation insurance coverage starts at $100,000 per year, but even that might not be enough.

In summary, medical evacuation costs can be astronomical and can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is essential to check with your provider to ensure coverage and coverage is adequate for your specific situation.

How much is a medical evacuation from a cruise ship?

Emergency Medical Evacuation plans typically require a minimum of $100, 000 per person for domestic travel, with plans offering $150, 000 for international travelers. The cost of evacuation can vary depending on the location, and insurance plans offered by cruise lines often fall short of this amount. Some plans offer a Hospital of Choice benefit, allowing the insured to choose their destination hospital. However, this does not guarantee immediate evacuation to the nearest hospital until medically stable, and transportation to the chosen hospital is standard.

All travel insurance policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions unless you qualify for the pre-existing medical conditions waiver, which some comprehensive package plans offer. If you don’t qualify for the waiver, some plans may not apply the exclusion to the evacuation and repatriation benefit. This can be found in the policy’s definition or Exclusions section.

  • Hi Brighton, I’ve been binge perusal your articles and have really learned so much from you. Thank you very much. My husband and I are contemplating relocating to Mexico but he has a donated kidney. I gave him a kidney 6 years ago, We would need access to these services and I am so glad they are out there for us when we move. I live with depression too. Just need a great therapist and a little meds. God bless you and your family. Peace

  • In many ways the ISABI system seems good for residents and expats, except for preexisting conditions and above 65 if I remember correctly. Do you have any articles of people over 65 discussing their experience being forced to pay for Mexican private insurance and hospital discount plans (together with pharmacy doctor care)??

  • Pam’s plan (presently) includes air evac. it includes spouse and I think pets. However she has a great plan. But isn’t it best to “hedge your bet” and live in an area where quality health care is available. That’s part or our logic in choosing La Paz. If we leave Canada permanently,we lose much of the plan. Thus my quest for affordable health plans for those over 65 in Mexico. If the distance was less we could be like Mr B and “commute” and thus save a very good health plan. But that isn’t an option. 2 dogs in a Rav? Thousands of Km? And quite honestly …we don’t want to live in BC and it’s 3600ish km to La Paz. Just my 2 cents (Canadian) worth … I guess. Dave of P n D

  • Americans need to move to Mexico to get medical care. I am an Australian who moved to USA in 2019. There is almost no pain relief for chronic pain patients & to add to this already dire situation on Christmas Eve 2022 Biden passed the no pain act & now you can’t get post op pain medication! Wtf I’m actually serious. Everyday we have mastectomies, hysterectomies, brain surgery, amputations, spinal surgeries with no pain relief post discharge & inadequately treating pain post op in hospital. Tylenol is not pain relief post op. I have to raise the funds to get surgery in Mexico because I’ve had a torn rotator cuff since July. I need spinal surgery too but again I am not having surgery in USA. There are 2 internationally recognized hospitals in Mexico with most doctors & surgeons in these 2 hospitals USA board certified
