Americans need a valid U.S. passport, an Australian visa or travel authorization, and a valid Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enter Australia as a U.S. citizen. Most U.S. citizens who travel to Australia with a visa or visa-waiver are admitted without incident, but Australian authorities have the right and responsibility for assessing their character.

US citizens must apply for a valid Australian Visa (Subclass 601) online or directly with the Australian Government. If you’re not a national citizen, a valid visa is required to enter Australia.
Most visa applicants must meet certain minimum health standards in order to be granted a visa. If you have a United States passport, you need an ETA for Australia. To determine your visa requirements, follow these steps:
- Submit your application well in advance of your travel.
- Attach all required documents.
- Use the Australian ETA app (Subclass 601) to apply for an ETA.
- Be of good character and declare all recorded offenses to the Australian government.
- Follow the steps provided to determine your visa needs.
