Should I Bring My Social Security Number On A Trip?

22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 C.F.R 51.60 (f) mandate that individuals must provide their Social Security number when applying for a U.S. passport or renewing one. To apply for a Social Security card, individuals must bring their passport or travel document with their Machine Readable Immigrant Visa (MRIV) or Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551). Noncitizens can also apply for Social Security Number (SSN) cards as part of the immigration process.

To apply for a SSN, individuals must provide proof of their identity, age, and U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status. Acceptable documents include a Green Card, which is valid for readmission to the United States after a trip abroad. If you do not have a Social Security number, you can apply for it on the same application form as for permission to work.

It is important to note that bringing your Social Security card to travel is not necessary. Instead, it should be securely stored at home or in a bank safe deposit box. Other personal information may be required by companies in Buenos Aires, but there is no reason for any company in the U.S. to require your USA social security number.

Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint to travel. All Work and Travel USA participants on the J-1 Cultural Exchange Visa need a Social Security card. If you plan to drive, you only need your passport and drivers license. In accordance with 22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 CFR 51.60(f), you must provide your Social Security number if you have been issued one.

Ensure that no other form of identification has your Social Security number on it, including driver’s licenses, state ID cards, and motor vehicle registrations. If you still have old photo IDs with your Social Security number, request a new one immediately.

Password cheat sheets are common among Americans, as they are used to access various accounts. However, a survey by the Pew Research Center found that 73 percent of people use password cheat sheets, and one of the worst places for a password cheat sheet is your wallet.

Social Security numbers (SSNs) are the most exposed credentials in data breaches, as they provide a direct line of sight to identity, finances, and credit records. If compromised, criminals can open bank accounts, obtain credit cards, access medical care, and claim tax returns.

They can also commit crimes in your name and rack up debt, damaging your standing with banks and credit reporting agencies. Identity Guard offers near real-time alerts if your SSN has been compromised, and offers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

  • Great information!! I want to add here that my brother and sister-in-law have traveled extensively and recommended that when I was sending my son off on his travels to copy his ID and PASSPORT and have him keep those 2 items along with CASH in a separate hidden place other than his backpack. They also recommended I keep copies of both those items here at home with me as well.

  • My now wife arrived on K1 visa, We applied for Social security cards 2 weeks after under her maiden name, They requested current I94, passport, visa and birth certificate She was issued a card but our children were denied lol It made getting them on my company insurance a little more difficult but we were able to get it done! We’ll give it a few weeks and apply for the name change.

  • Hi, I recently received my work authorization. After i got married my last name change to just one. My EAD card shows my married name, but my social security card shows my maiden or birth name, according to my attorney I have to update my social security card to my married name, before applying for drivers license or jobs, is this correct?

  • Inquiry: :K1 visa Port of Entry May 4 2022 filed Social Security Number May 19, 2022. queens NY Until June 19 2022 i have not received mail from Social Security. I called they response it was denied due to no signature photocopy of my PASSPORT, advice me to file again, Jun 21 2022 ill went again SS office during the interview but they dont get my docs they only tell me my K1 visa passport is expired JUN 9 2022 they ask my marriage certificate which i have married last Vegas Jun 17 2022. but i have only uncertified copy of marriage which original will be release on 10 days June 27, 2022, however my 90days stayed stamped will be expired on Aug 1 2022. Question im not quite sure if another process need to include on this situtation. Can you help me on this to clear my mind? thank you.

  • My wife already has a social security card with her maiden name, but she is filing for adjustment of status with my last name as a name change form. Will the adjustment of status form tell social security office to issue her a new card with the same number but new name, or would we have to go to the social security office to change her last name before we file the adjustment of status form?

  • This may not be your area of expertise but taking a shot, hoping to get an answer. I am receiving my social security and My wife has received her “award letter” that she is eligible and is making her first visit to the US to meet her SS benefits requirements as a foreign (non-US-citizen) spouse which is to visit the US every 6 months for one month, (She is a Mexican). I bought tickets to depart Aug. 19 and return Sept. 26, this is over the 30 starlight days in a row. But then some people have been trying to tell me she has to be in the US from the 1st of a month to the end of a month, meaning the 1st of Sept. to the 30th of Sept. How does that make since? OK so which is correct? A full 30 days in a row or does it have to be the 1st to the end of a month like all of Sept? It is not clear in the ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10137.pdf publication under section “Your right to Social Security payments when you are outside the United States” page 2 & 3 they sent her. Thank you
