Is sailing a technical sport?

1) It’s Multidimensional. There are more factors to think about in sailing than any other sport. It’s technical, you need to optimize your boat and equipment. It’s physical, with some classes like the Laser demanding incredible fitness while other classes less so. It requires studying the natural environment which is beautiful in itself. You need to observe wind, waves and currents and use them to your advantage. It’s tactical, you need to think about how your boat interacts with others on the course and use rules to your advantage. One of my friends described sailing as playing chess with a firehose squirting at your face while running a marathon.

2) You can’t be benched or eliminated. Sailing events are called “Regattas” and are usually held over 2 to 4 days. World championships are usually 7 days long. Anyone can participate at a Regatta and compete whether you are 12 or 75 or even 80!. Unlike football or other contact sports, you can compete all your life. And unlike Tennis, you can’t be eliminated after two matches. In sailing, you get to compete in all the scheduled races.

3) All body types can play. You can be light or heavy as there are different types of boats to accommodate your body type. If you are short in Basketball or small in Football at some point you are going to face some severe disadvantages. Not so in sailing. There are different boat types for small people and big people.

Is sailing a rich mans sport?

Sailing can be done in tiny boats or huge boats, and you can sail with groups of people or completely alone (you can even sail with a cat!) Your sailboat can be your home or you can rent one for the holidays. But the best thing is, you don’t have to be rich to enjoy sailing!

How did I start sailboat racing? I live in Austria, a country with high mountains but no access to the sea, and alpine skiing is our national sport. As a result, I started sailing quite late at the age of 25 when I joined SAT, the former Austrian energy automation company mainly active in the field of SAS, RTUs and SCADA systems. In 1988, I participated in SAT’s annual sailing week in the Adriatic Sea, at that time still a part of Yugoslavia. I got excited about sailing and soon obtained a sailing license, first for inland waters and later also for ocean sailing. Soon after that I bought my Dart 18 catamaran. With this boat but also with other one-design class boats, I sailed many regattas in the past 30 years on national as well as on international events.

The Dart 18 One-Design Class: The Dart 18 is a 5.5-meter-long glass-fiber catamaran to be sailed by one (without jib) or two persons and can achieve speeds of up to 20 knots. Sailing at such speeds with a small cat is a great fun, but very wet, so wearing a wetsuit or, in colder conditions, even a dry suit is a must. The Dart 18 was originally designed in 1975 by Rodney March/UK after he had created the Olympic Tornado catamaran. The Dart 18 has been built around 8.400 times until now and is based on strict one-design class rules. This means each boat must be made of identical components and in result boats are competitive almost irrespective of their age. That makes racing affordable compared to other boat classes which are based on “box rules” and require regular updates of hardware if you want to race competitively.

Ivy Style was inspired by leisure activities commonly enjoyed by the upper-classes in the United Kingdom and northeastern United States (such as polo, sailing, hunting, fencing, crew rowing, lacrosse, golf, tennis, rugby, squash, and swimming) and adapted the sportswear associated with these activities as everyday wear. As such, it incorporated aspects of traditional British country clothing (tweed sport coat, brogue shoes, etc.). By the 1980s, mass marketing of brands such as Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Daniel Cremieux, and Izod brought a resurgence of Ivy and preppy styles and moved them into the mainstream.

For women, preppy-influenced fashions emerged in the 1960s, a trend led by designers such as Perry Ellis and Lilly Pulitzer, influenced by designers such as Oleg Cassini, and popularized by female students at the Seven Sisters Colleges, sister institutions to the Ivy League. These classic ensembles of the 1960s and 1970s include tailored skirt suits, low heels, wrap dresses, shift dresses, silk or cotton blouses, and jewelry with a refined style. Such clothing often includes elements drawn from typical preppy styles, such as nautical stripes, pastel colours, or equestrian details.

All such events are part of the larger world of yachting, if they are done for recreational or sporting purposes.
