Is Traveling To The Sea Of Galilee Safe?

The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Tiberias or Kinneret, is a freshwater lake in Israel that is the second-lowest lake in the world. It is located in northern Israel and is considered a popular travel destination due to its proximity to the Golan Heights. The area is known for its orchards, wildflower meadows, and mountain panoramas.

The Sea of Galilee is considered safe to visit, but it is best to visit during April or May or between September and November to avoid the heat and humidity of summer months. Winters are cool. The area of Ein Gev is considered completely safe, with no unrest in Israel and generally quiet by the Sea of Galilee.

Travel within Israel is generally safe, with high personal safety and low crime rates. However, tourists should be prepared for crowded beaches, litter, music blasting from cars and tents, and arseim. Local advice is recommended regarding specific sites and towns, and the risk from hostile war-related activities is very small.

For female travelers, Galilee is generally safe for them to take the same precautions as any other destination, such as avoiding walking alone. The journey begins in Nazareth and takes in sites of miracles on the Sea of Galilee.

Is Sea of Galilee worth visiting?

The Sea of Galilee, Israel’s largest freshwater lake, is believed to be the place where Jesus walked on water. According to the Bible, much of his ministry was carried out around the lake, making it an important Christian pilgrimage site. The lake is a popular spot for relaxing on its beaches, cycling, or walking, and is home to many sites connected with biblical stories. Capernaum, believed to be the spot where Jesus first met Peter, Andrew, James, John, and Matthew, and where he preached and healed the sick, is a significant biblical site.

The well-preserved remains of a 4th-century synagogue built in white limestone sit above the ruins of an earlier Roman synagogue. Around it lie the ruins of a village where Simon Peter, later beatified as Saint Peter, is thought to have lived. A modern church with a glass viewing panel extends over his house and the ruins of a 5th-century church surrounding it. At Tabgha, the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, built in 1982, protects the remains of a 5th-century church, its floor of 4th-century mosaics, and the earlier foundations of a 3rd-century church.

Can you go in the Sea of Galilee?

The Sea of Galilee, also known as Kinneret or Kinnor, was once called “the Bride”, “the Handmaiden of the Hills”, and “the Silver Woman” by Arabic and Aramaic poets. The ancient Hebrews called it “the Harp” due to its soothing harp-like sounds and resemblance to an ancient harp. Today, it is a beautiful lake with a surface constantly changing during the day. In summer, its waters are sparkling and almost bathtub-warm, providing a refreshing and cleansing experience.

The Sea of Galilee is 210m (689 ft) below sea level and 21km long, from the Jordan River to its empties out. It was where Jesus preached, fed, and restored the sick and maimed. Today, parts of the sea are filled with speedboats and water-skiers, while others remain serene and mysterious. The Sea of Galilee is a vast reservoir of sardine, mullet, catfish, and combfish, which are still caught today, though some kibbutzim have developed careful farming methods.

Why is the Sea of Galilee so stormy?

Why is the Sea of Galilee so stormy?

The New Testament describes several incidents where Jesus and His disciples were caught up in storms on the Sea of Galilee. These storms occur due to the Sea’s bowl-like configuration, which is significantly affected by sudden changes in wind and atmospheric conditions. The warm, humid air at the lake’s surface is impacted by cooler, dry air from the valleys, causing instant turmoil on the sea’s surface.

Israel experiences two basic weather patterns: hot and dry (summer) and cool and wet (winter), which are stable but linked by unstable transitional weather patterns (fall and spring) that can produce significant storms, particularly violent on and around the Sea of Galilee.

The storm likely took place during either the fall or spring season and was frightening to seasoned fishermen. However, it was against the backdrop of this amazing geographical setting that Jesus taught His disciples some of the greatest lessons about faith and His creative sovereignty (Mt. 14:22–33; Mk. 6:45–52; Lk. 8:22–25).

What is the parasite in the Sea of Galilee?

Microsporidium, a waterborne parasite, can cause eye infections and is associated with the Sea of Galilee, a lake where Jesus walked on water and made a miraculous catch of fish. The Ministry of Health has reported numerous cases of severe cornea infections, scarring, and blurred vision in ophthalmologists. As of now, 29 patients have been hospitalized with lesions in the cornea consistent with microsporidium infections. The Ministry of Health has launched an epidemiological investigation, revealing that some cases visited various beaches of the Sea of Galilee.

What is the warning of the Sea of Galilee?

The Health Ministry has issued a warning about the risk of serious eye infections from swimming in the Sea of Galilee. At least three cases have been reported of cornea inflammation and corneal scarring due to microsporidia, a fungal parasite in the water. The ministry advises swimmers to wear goggles and seek medical help if they experience symptoms.

Is Nazareth safe right now?

Israel, often associated with Gaza and the West Bank, is not a popular destination for travelers. The main tourist areas include Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Negev, Nazareth, and the Dead Sea. Israel is in a continuous conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, with occasional small “wars” or operations where rockets are fired at Israel. The Iron Dome, an effective defense system, intercepts rockets, and sirens warn citizens to take cover in bomb shelters.

These operations occur once or twice a year for a couple of days. Despite the perceived security concerns, traveling within Israel is statistically very safe, with high personal safety and low crime rates, especially compared to many Western countries and cities. In terms of crime, traveling in Israel is actually safer than staying in the UK, USA, or most other western countries.

Israel’s main tourist areas, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Negev, Nazareth, and the Dead Sea, remain safe despite the association with Gaza and the West Bank, as these areas are not the primary residences or destinations for most people.

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful article. I fell in love with Kinneret and the Sea of Galilee when i went to Israel in 2016 and how beautiful it is in the morning. I felt the climate also very pleasing and the temperature is excellent. If i had to choose for a place to live this is the only place in my mind.

  • I can’t help but think how so many people from the past. Those who wonder about the places Jesus Christ walked and importantly where He gave so many The Gospel for the first time. I am so blessed to be able to see something that so many only dreamed of. Praise Be To God Almighty for sending us such a wonderful Gift In Jesus Christ. Thank you for sharing all the work you and the others for putting together these articles. They mean alot to many and will mean alot to those who have not yet seen them.❤

  • I was excited to see on that large stone monument there was ancient Hebrew carved that shows the name of the LORD. In the paleo-Hebrew the letters represented more clearly the meaning of each letter. In the case of LORD, the letters: hey, yod, hey, vav represents: Behold (hey) the Hand (yod), Behold (hey) the Nail (vav)! They’ve recently found the oldest representation of LORD on a “curse tablet” at Mt Ebal. The name LORD showed how Christ was going to come to die on the Cross for Man’s sin!

  • Thanks for sharing this precious article. I am listening and seeing Jesus, the Disciples, Mary Magdalene, and the rest of the followers, especially the fishermen. This is so priceless. I wish I could afford to pay a visit before I die. Visiting the places where Jesus was only a couple of thousand years ago means so much to me as I am a strong believer in Christianity. I so wish that I would be able to though. 🙏

  • So neat! I have enjoyed perusal your articles…. I feel like I have been there now. One day we will all be able to walk where Jesus walked. How I love my Lord and yes, His will be done in my life…if I die, I die….He will give any the strength to carry out His will. He died for all…His precious blood atonement paid the full debt…🙏🙌🏼🇮🇱

  • watching the first three seasons of The Chosen once again…truly with to you all to watch this amzing Story telling…Simone Peter has just procured a boat to travel back to Capernaum…He said it will be easier to row the eight miles across the sea of Galilee…then to walk the 12 mile coast line back to Capernaum

  • please pray for the lord to speak to me. i went to visit israel a couple of weeks ago and my dad got sick having to cut my trip short. i didn’t get to see sea of gallelie and it saddens me greatly because i feel that i should have chosen to stay. I want to come back to Jerusalem and finish my holy trip.🤍

  • Jesus Christ the One and Only He came from the throne of The Father to the womb of a woman. He put on humanity that we might put on eternity. He became the Son of Man that we might become sons of God. He was born in poverty and raised in obscurity. His family was inconspicuous and had no influence. In His infancy, He startled a King. As a boy, He stunned theologians with His wisdom, for He was taught of God. His wisdom just kept growing with Him. All of the wisdom of men has never matched His wisdom. Never has a man spoken like this Man. In His manhood, He ruled the elements and quieted the raging sea. He healed the multitudes without medicine and fed thousands from a boy’s lunch. He restored life back to the dead and demon spirits even obeyed Him. He never wrote a book, yet no library can contain the books written about Him. He never wrote a song, yet He is the theme of more songs than all songwriters combined. He never founded a college, yet all the colleges combined can’t boast of His number of students. He never built an army, yet no leader has ever had as many volunteers. Great men have come and gone, yet He lives on. Herod could not kill Him. The devil could not tempt Him. Death could not keep Him. The tomb could not hold Him. He was rich but, for our sakes He became poor. He laid aside His glory for a simple robe. He was born among farm animals and slept in a feeding trough. He paid the price for all of our sins and He was placed in another man’s tomb. He laid down His life and took it up again, just as He said He would.

  • Hi Thank you so much for sharing your amazing experience of the Sea of Galilee with us! Shalom to you from Melbourne Australia! I just wanted to point out that’ Kinneret’ means ‘ Harp’ in Hebrew, and that name was given to the Sea of Galilee when viewed from a mountain, as it’s shape resembles a harp, as used maybe in king David’s time! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua returning soon to reign over the world from Jerusalem forever.

  • Well done. It puts everything into a clearer perspective. Couple this with the Chosen series, the entire New Testament becomes so much more clear. I always thought the demonic infested men were at Gergesa / Gadarenes about 30 miles to the SE. But when it is all pulled together, this seems to make the most sense – the caves, the pig location etc. Not that it is important, but it does clarify and adds credibility to my understanding. OK, got that settled. It is all good. I can now see the events in my mind and put a thumbtack into the place and event. Peter’s home, not much to get excited about, is it? a small storage shed! And I didn’t realise Matthew was from here as well – thought it was Jerusalem. Got that cleared up. And the so called mighty Jordan is not much more than a deep creek! That really took me by surprise. And this was the river that Joshua had to cross?? – you can pretty much walk through it – hardly an obstacle. And I can see why Namaan was so ticked off at having to be washed 7x in it. Dirty, small creek! Well, at least we know. And it makes perfect sense why Jesus chose Capurnaum – a trade route where He can have the most strategic impact. And the many towns nearby, the positive attitude of the people who are fed up with the religious nonsense down south. I would have chosen this city as the best as well. As I said, well done.

  • Great article. ‘Been there. But several things showed and explained in the article are biblically and archaeologically speculative. Just for one example the place of Peters House. The place mentioned is more likely the house of Peters mom. Recently archaeologists discoverd the place thats more likely the house of Peter…

  • The Great Commission: 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 | ESV

  • The only time that the word commission is used in the Bible is Acts 26:12 where the Apostle Paul is speaking on when he was Saul of Tarsus he was given a commission from the high priests to round up followers of Christ and bring them bound to be put to death. Jesus simply commanded them to go preach. The real commission was not a good one at all. This is why some are apprehensive to call Jesus’s commandment to His disciples a commission.

  • There is no evidence that Yeshua lived in the home of Peter. However, we know Yeshua lived in the town. It’s suspected that Yeshua was probably giving housing by the rich man of whom Yeshua healed from a distance. If your son was dying and was healed by a Rabbi. What would you do to show your appreciation?

  • So beautifully built by our father. When you go through torture torment and blackmail. The whole time jesus christ was with you going through it to. Allowing you to see Jesus in visions letting you know he with you and he hears and feels what you feel. So many were tortured ” jesus was with each of us with angels saints. He let me see just how real he is. And how many evildoers there are. I rebuke it in jesus name saying to the devil. You will see more will turn to jesus christ. Just like jesus and his 12 chosen the two boats. Me and jesus and others are catching men, woman, children you’ll see. A few turns to mulitidues. Amen ask and you shall receive. I rebuke the snakes I my back and in my yard the next day. Jesus went through it to. I forgive what they did to me but not what they do and did to jesus christ. Sorry I can’t be okay with making jesus look like the grinch. It was evil.

  • Enjoyed this much thank you. You mean Yahshua right ? It is painful to hear the pagan name used. In violation of the 3rd commandment. The word “in vain” is “l’shav” in Hebrew לשוא meaning “falsely”. Not Greek on the mount stone . Aramaic Hebrew /Otiot pictographs = Oldest of all lettering. Jeremiah 6:16 This is what the YHWH says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

  • And out of all those little towns the only one that stayed is Tiberia (Tyberius). Others are only biblical sights, you can see ruins, what is escavated but no towns. Jesus said that if so many miracles happeed in Sodoma and Gomorah they would be covered in ashes and repenting their sins. But these towns, despite having Jesus there still stayed hard. He spent 2 weeks in Chorazin working as a carpenter to help one widdow with 5 kids and sick mother. Whose husband died. He finished all the works that her husband didn’t get the chance to finish. People were coming to see, said he is hungry for money and that he did not talk to them and teach. He did. He taught them about love,Mercy, helping through work. They would do anything to destroy a woman who was already in deep problems. That is one of the reasons why those towns were dumed

  • It blows my mind that Israelis aren’t fisherman. Only around 3 tackle shops in Isreal. I guess Jews don’t fish. 9 miles offshore they can catch nice tuna and other beautiful fish.. i guess they rather eat farm raised tilapia grown in ponds with massive drugs… maybe 3 tackle shops in Isreal… prove me wrong.. I ll be there in November. Im fishing

  • Galilee: Ga (in Dorian dialect) or Gee (Ionian) was a Greek land, 98% populated by Greeks since Alexander the Great. Ga or Gee means “land”, Lilaia = beautiful/ cute. Lilaia was a Nymph in the Greek mythology and a village near Delphi. JESUS was Greek = IESUS from the verb “iao” to heal. This means He was a HEALER like “iatros” (doctor) from the same verb iao. Iaso in feminine gender used in Maternity clinics in Greece. IESUS CHRISTOS both names Greek: Healer Anointed. Someone becomes a Jew from the mother! If Jesus was a Jew the Jews would claim His genealogy from His mother MARIA. Instead they claim genealogy from His STEP father Joseph. They knew nothing about virgin Mary and the birth from the Holy Spirit neither about archangel Gabriel who announced to virgin Mary that she would be the mother of God’s Son. Only the Greeks were expecting God’s Son from a mortal woman + “Dias” (in the European languages the word “God” comes from DIAS = Zeus i.e. Dieau, Deus etc, so that the Son of Dias (Zeus) and a mortal woman (Prometheus explains all these to Io, that many generations after her this would happen and she gets amazed to hear about the future hardships of that mortal woman….her Son would go to Hades (Adees) /the Underworld, ro fight against Chronus (in Latin Saturn…) (equivalent to devil: Poseidon) and to set us free from the bonds and passions of our mortal life and give us the Eternal Life (as we read it in the tragedy ” Prometheus Bound” of Aeschylus tragic poet. The Jews were and still are expecting a messiah from David, an earthly king who would defeat the Roman occupation and make them the rulers of Earth. Jesus DOESN’T come from David! His Father is our FATHER GOD, through the Holy Spirit. He was born by the Holy Spirit. Btw, Maria is a Greek female name found in Homer, comes from the verb “marmairo” and from this verb we get “marmaro”: marble, the rock which shines. In Latin and Italian “mare” comes from this verb and means “the sea” the shining water (under the sunlight)! The Jewish name is Marjiam or Myriam not Maria. Jesus was a Greko- Roman citizen that’s why the Jews couldn’t touch Him (they were wondering if He was a Samaritan) and always Jesus was separating Himself from their ancestors: YOUR father is Abraham etc. The fact that He was crucified proves that He was under the Roman laws. The Jewish punishment was stoning, kicking from a cliff, stuffing somebody with barley. The American preachers don’t have the “feel of the Greek language ” nor the deep knowledge of it and they should better either study it or seek advice from someone who is originally Greek and knows the ancient dialects like “koinee”. Of course…Iesus Christos is coming to “collect” His people before the Antichrist (messiah from David) will come. “Because you kept my Word of perseverance I will keep you to ESCAPE OUT OF
