Is Tourism Available In Honduras?

Effective March 22, 2023, travelers are no longer required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test results for PCR, Antingen, or ELISA tests before entering Honduras. However, airlines may still require additional documentation. Honduras is accepting tourists and many hotels, tour operators, and restaurants have reopened.

However, the government of Honduras wants all visitors to abide by certain rules during their stay. Tourist hotspots, public transportation, and some streets are areas where most thefts and pickpocketing occur. To enter Honduras, you must purchase a tourist card at the airport, which allows you to visit for up to 90 days. If you’re not a tourist, avoid non-essential travel to areas with high crime rates and civil unrest.

From August 2024, British nationals must have a visa to enter Honduras. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides advice on entry requirements, safety, security, regional risks, health, getting help, and email alerts.

For those coming from the United States, most visitors can enter Honduras, regardless of vaccination status. Honduras has lifted all restrictions involving Covid testing and immunization requirements. However, it does not permit the entry of travellers who have been in the United Kingdom or South Africa in the 21 days prior to their arrival.

Is Honduras or Nicaragua safer?

El Heraldo visited Nicaragua to understand the low homicide rate of 8 per 100, 000 inhabitants, compared to Honduras’ 57 per 100, 000 inhabitants. The country’s low violence rate is attributed to the modernization of its police force, which began in the 1990s and continued until 2007. The ‘Preventive, Proactive and Community’ police model has helped reduce the homicide rate to 8 per 100, 000. According to official statistics, 79% of the population approves of the police force, and under 5% of Nicaraguans consider crime to be the country’s biggest problem. In contrast, 48% of Hondurans surveyed in December 2015 have no confidence in the police.

Hondurans view the United States favorably, and they host a joint military unit with U. S. service members at Soto Cano Air Base. The country faces challenges such as weak institutions, corruption, poverty, food insecurity, high rates of violence, impunity, citizen insecurity, lack of respect for human rights, inequitable access to economic opportunities and social services, extreme vulnerability to climate change impacts, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

These challenges disproportionately impact marginalized communities, drive irregular migration and forced displacement, and contribute to the expansion of transnational criminal organizations. U. S. policy in Honduras focuses on addressing these challenges, promoting a healthy and open economy, improved business and investment climate, and the well-being and security of the Honduran people. The U. S. also supports Honduran efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change.

Additionally, the U. S. works with Honduras to address regional challenges such as irregular migration, forced displacement, corruption, transnational criminal networks, narcotics trafficking, money laundering, and trafficking in persons.

  • I’m Honduran and like to spend time there. Your article is on point.👍 The reason Honduran people look so different is because they have several native tribes that are different racially. Mayans, Tolupanes, Misquitos, and Garifuna are native tribes but look different from one another. Some are brown, some are copper, some have that aboriginal color, etc. then you have waves of immigrants everything from Spanish, Irish, Jews, Palestinians, and Africans. Even black people differ themselves from one another. You have the Garifunas that were African slaves that escaped their captors before reaching their destination. Garifunas tend to be more African ethnic looking. The other group of blacks are “Negros Ingleses” which were freed slaves from England. These guys tend to be more like the bloodline of NFL players since they have great physical features and usually have their slave owners names like Smith, Thomas, Johnson, etc. They pride themselves on not being directly african since most today are biracial. Then. you have the Misquitos which are short and stout. Then you have “Caracoles”(slang term which means “seashell”) which are those blacks from the Bay Islands that aren’t garifuna nor are freed slaves; they tend to be biracial and usually speak English with a Caribbean accent. There were parts of Honduras where you have predominantly white people like in the department(state) of Santa barbara which was migrated by Irish in the mid-1800’s. They was once also once an Indian migration when freed indentured slave workers from nearby countries that replaced African slaves after England abolished slavery and wealthy english sugar cane plantation owners were left scrambling for laborers.

  • Among Latinos, they know Honduras women are gorgeous, non Latinos are barely exploring that, hopefully stays that way, we don’t need another Medellin, also the country is 90% mestizo, the islands were under British rule for a couple hundred years, the address is rather easy in San pedro sula, if you know the quadrants, when they say 9st 8th Ave NO, it means northwest, and then the house number ex: casa 1234 9 ave means the house is on 9th Ave 8th st, means the closer street is 8th, stay safe.

  • My husband is from Honduras. Him, my one year old son (at the time), and I went to visit the country in 2018. His family lives in Tegucigalpa, so that is where we spent our time. Everyone was kind that I met. The city surprised me in that I expected there to be much more vegetation than there was. It was mostly dirt where trees or grass should be. When we traveled to the coast for a day I saw lots of vegetation and hills. I am not sure why the city did not have much. Since we stayed with family I never paid attention to how different the addresses were there.

  • I am glad you enjoyed yourself here! A bit of context on everything you mentioned. 1:07 Honduran people ARE very friendly. I also travel a lot and here in Central America, I’d say honduran people are second after guatemalans when it comes to being friendly. We make a lot of noise, we are happy, we are welcoming and, most importantly, we are noble. Sure, you’ll find some idiots somewhere, but overall, people will be welcoming. 2:15 Yes there is a lot of MESOAMERICAN culture in Honduras. Mexico and Central America share ancestors, so a lot of what you’ll see in Mexico, you’ll see it here. Also, we used to be a part of the Mexican Empire before becoming the Federal Repubic of Central America and eventually dividing into the five nations we now know. 2:47 Yes. Bachata is the most listened genre. Then we can mention reggaeton and punta. Since we are very caribbean-like, the noisier the music is, the better the party will be. I don’t like any of those genres (except fr punta), but I can understand why my fellow hondurans love them. 4:02 Beaches and coral reefs are the international standard for honduran tourism, but the western side of the country, the mayan part, is also visited by many, mostly europeans. 4:32 A way to make tourism more flexible is to allow USD into the accepted currencies, so yes, the more touristic the place is, the more USD will be accepted. Tegucigalpa does not accept USD. 4:42 Bay islands used to be British, so english is the main language, but you’ll also be able to speak english in the rest of the country.

  • Wow Sly in Honduras 😲😎🙌👍 I have always been curious about this country Honduras. I know this is sadly where Rapper Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes passed away. R.I.P. Now I am motivated to hit that fly button out of the UK to adventure around Central America my mind was on Costa Rica, Panama Nicaragua, and now I will for sure add Honduras to the bucket list.

  • I’m American livin in Roatan for 7 years. I’ve never even seen a fight in roatan. Maybe nobody yelling. Its possible to make a friend for life holding the door for someone. The people are amazing. The only thing thats alarming is the police/security with military grade guns everywhere but I always wonder why do they need the big guns when I havent seen any crime? Maybe them having the guns is the reason there isn’t any crime? Who knows but I feel unbelievably safe. roatan 🇭🇳🇭🇳🇭🇳

  • My friends and i traveled there a few times back in the early 90s . You are right. Very underrated. We visited Tegucigalpal, sand perdro Sula, el Progresso etc. Punta is the general music there, paranda, bachata,Caribean salsa, comba, reggae, merengue, etc . You are right about the addresses.Tegucigalpa interesting. Very steep decent and crazy climb for the planes so most people would not land at that airport but would go to sand perdro Sula and drive back to Tegucigalpa. We wanted to experience what most tourist would never experience so we had connected with local friends there . It was not so bad as it is now .but enjoyed every moment of it . Traveling to the mountains, the incas ruines, etc .the clubs In Tegucigalpa awesome!curves galore. No YouTube then.love your articles reminded me of what I did without YouTube from South East Asia, central and South America and even Europe.

  • regarding the addresses: the system is called “Plus Codes” or “Open Location Codes” (OLC). They are designed to be used with or without a network connection and are particularly useful in areas with inadequate or no street addressing systems. Plus Codes consist of a six-character or eight-character code, which includes a plus sign (+) in the middle. The six-character code represents an area of approximately 14 meters by 14 meters, while the eight-character code represents an area of approximately 2 meters by 3 meters. (but only used by google)

  • I can vouch for USD not being accepted anywhere else in Honduras, besides Roatan. I think the Hondurans understand the importance of being friendly especially when you’re in business. There are many places you can buy the same thing, so it helps to be friendly. Forget about addresses, most of the time it will be based on a specific business. For example if I live one block south of Pollolandia, it will be The Neighborhood name, and then where your house is in relation to Pollolandia. Tegucigalpa has street names.

  • Lived in Honduras for 3 1/2 years. Been to some nice beaches after living in south Fl, Tampa and visiting Greece. The best one I’ve been to are in Roatan. Tela is a close second. Friendly people and food is good. A typical Honduran breakfast is much better than one at a fast food establishment. Recommend not wearing your best watch, necklace, etc.. Leave that at home or in your hotel/motel room. No need to temp people to rob you.

  • Some insight on address (Im honduran) Those weird numbers are autogenerated, we DON’T DO ADDRESSES, everything is reference based. You’ll need to ask someone and they will tell you ” yeah go to X landmark, 3 blocks right, 2 blocks leftf, you will then see a dog peeing on a tree or an old lady sitting outside, or a red truck…., then 2 houses from there” …. The dog, the lady or the car will always be there. This is no joke XD

  • I am from honduras but don’t really know my country but am going back soon. Currently I live in Peru and man this country Can really get you into trouble especially if you involved with a girl from peru. You can imagine what I am talking about if you been to Peru. But sooner or later I will be heading back and I from tegu by the way. Good article bro and thanks for the info.

  • My dad is from Honduras. I plan on going there soon. He lives in Tela by the beach. I can’t wait. I’m black also. He got deported when I was like 18. I’m 36 now. Haven’t seen him in a long time. I talk to him all the time though and FaceTime. I want to build me a house out there. My family (his mom) has a lot of land there. Imma probably start a daiquiri business out there too.

  • About the adress. Those numbers and letters at the begining of the adress aren’t the Street name or number. It is the Google Maps Plus Code where It shows the exact location. Basically what it that means is that Google divided all planet Earth into millions of squares and gave each square a ubique code. Usefull if you’re lost since that code will give you the exact location.

  • Hondurans either have family only in Honduras or have family as well in/from El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, y of course Mexico! You either a majority full blood or a mix of a race. We are mainly a majority Maya/Euro/ mix all over but we also have Afro/ Afro mixes in the north coast or Nicaragua side from the garifuna/misquito from islands like Jamaica, Trinidad, & St Vincent from the English/ Spanish, but Asians came after ww2 majority Japanese/Chinese

  • My Mom was from Honduras from San Pedro sula and met my Dad that was a America from Champaign Illinois and we haven’t been back since 2012 it looks like everything is decent done thier. And I don’t have a good relationship with my relative’s at all so I am just going to chill bye myself and go be sad somewhere else but try to enjoy it 😊 and stay positive and just be in my Illinois world 😊💯

  • We do have uber though. Also be sure to know the conversion rate from dollars to lempiras because some folk might want to charge you way more. If they say a price then ask for a discount, they’ll usually bring it down a little or to the normal price. Watch out for numbered taxis because they charge a lot too, consider using Uber as the app will give you a better price and it’s much safer.

  • Yeah Tegucigalpa the capital . I went there in September 2018 and out of my 37 countries I’ve been to so far that place was the most unsafe and everything you see and hear about it is TRUE. When the sun goes down the crime goes up and if your a tourist 9/10 times you will get robbed. Only thing I loved about it was the FOOD! 😋.

  • Another thing music all the Spanish countries will listen all kind of Spanish music let me ask you something oh from what country are the Beatles and people from the United States listen a lot the band is still in this times so my point is if you want to say something about a Country get better information on the resist dangers but like every country you had to see where you go you are nor going through a bad area nighttime and sometimes daytime and the United States go and walk around at night time In the Bronx and see how everything go for you safety

  • 2:14 Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador the whole region it used to be strongly connected culturally and politically with the Aztecs empire before the Spaniards came to mess with everything, I know this fact because it was written by the first colonizers, every year the Aztec empire they used to send their delegates to collect the offerings for the Aztec emperor of the time, so that means there was a political relationship and thus a cultural influence as well… 6:30 Honduras it used to be a very important hub for the Spanish empire during the early years of the colony, so there were a lot of European people moving to the coastal cities trying to be the first ones, therefore there was a huge mixture between European migrants from south of France, Spain, Italy, also Palestinian that locally in Honduras are called “turcos” assuming they were from Turkey, there ware Irish, and even eastern Europe from Ukraine may be, now put all that variety with the good looking native women that the Spaniards they used to take for wives and then you can have a better understanding why in the region the Honduran women are like that, before I used to heard from US men or from another countries that the Honduran women are very pretty but I did realize what they meant until I start to compare and they are right and is more common to find very attractive and curvy women in Honduras. 8:12 That is because most of those streets are “new” in comparison with the rest of the town so most of the times people don’t even know the name of the street or road so they use like referential addresses like “the red house passing two blocks after the hotel international” and those numbers that you mention are for google maps, so if you put those numbers on google maps then you get the exact location so at the end that looks more modern than the names of the street and avenue.

  • Ok I did my research youre right honduran women are the curviest becuase they’re mixed with African Garifuna and garifuna are a bantu tribe of people that ended up in honduras. Remember south african women are a bantu tribe group as well; it seems the south african women have bantu and khoisan tribe genes and this makes them the curviest women on Earth. The honduras have some of these genetics I noticed the Honduras women have a bantu shape of body.

  • Never been to Honduras, and most likely will be unable to make a fair assessment of Honduran people. I can only express my experience dealing with Honduran natives I have met while living in the states and compared them with other central Americans. I will have to agree, Honduran women are most definitely underrated. I would consider them to be above average in many respects. However, I will need to make a generalization about their personalities, and I have found them to have a swollen head, perhaps a bit on the snobbish side compared to let say Nicaraguans, who I find to be the most humble and pleasant in the region.

  • Too late for me, but for those of you looking for a good woman to marry, Honduras is your place. There you will find a drop dead gorgeous woman (like someone who will be turning heads everywhere you go) who is humble, dedicated, and pure. You can’t walk more than 5 minutes without seeing a woman who is astoundingly beautiful, both young and old. The sad thing is, Honduras has a high female homicide rate. Lots of women are just looking for a way out.

  • Back in 86 i popped over the border from Belize into Honduras, just as i did with Guatamala, bearing mind that i was stationed in Belize with the air force back then. Wasnt impressed with either country to be honest, and as you mentioned crime was very high. However, the people were very friendly, and they didnt have much to give in the first place. Luckily i came back in one piece, as i gave as much as i could. My time in Mexico was far more interesting, but thats another story

  • Yes my dude is pronounced hondurians wit and I as you said and no those people are not Chinese there Philippines is also a country close to us and I’m surprised you didn’t visit your heritage is located on Puerto cortes and la ceiva in Honduras that is there you will see the black hondurians that they speak a dialect call garifona you talk to much about other countries while explaining about Honduras

  • All respect but you talk when so much ignorant just because you see flags of another country means nothing you see flags in the United States of Mexico well I know but countries because it’s a restaurant away somebody from the community and from another article I see for you you walk around only a muscle he only in the bad parts of the cities is like if you go to Pennsylvania and go to the bad areas getting a hotel and those bad areas it’s going to be nasty hotels because is the area where you decide to stay
