Is There Internet Service On Cruise Ships?

Wi-Fi on cruise ships is available on all major cruise lines, but it may not be as fast or reliable as home connections. Cruise ships use satellite connections, which means stepping on the ship. Larger mainstream cruise lines typically offer Wi-Fi packages, such as Royal Caribbean WiFi Packages and VOOM internet service, which is billed as the fastest internet at sea. If booked ahead of time, passengers can get up to 30% off the rates they will pay on the ship.

Royal Caribbean VOOM is now available on every Royal Caribbean ship, with six times faster onboard WiFi speed than any other. However, each cruise operator has their own way of distributing internet access to their passengers. Most cruise lines offer Wi-Fi, but quality and cost varies from ship to ship, even within a cruise company’s fleet.

Internet access on cruise ships is both better and worse than you might expect. Generally, wifi on a cruise ship is slow, depending on where you are sailing, what cruise line you are on, and what kind of work you do. Establishing an Internet connection on a cruise ship can be done by connecting the vessel to a satellite. Traditionally, ships have telephones. Most cruise ships provide free WiFi to their internal network and services on the ship itself. However, you can still connect to the internet using your phones 3G or 4G if needed.

Is there a way to get free Wi-Fi on a cruise?

There aren’t any cruises that’ll give you unlimited Wi-Fi for free, but some do provide limited complimentary services.

Because cruise lines are already operating Wi-Fi networks, it can make sense to create in-house systems to allow guests to communicate with each other. Disney Cruise Line has done so with its app, which provides complimentary messaging to other guests on the ship.

The service also provides showtimes, daily activities, menus and the ability to book paid activities without needing to go to the front desk.

So, let’s say you’re interested in staying connected while aboard ship. If you’re not able to wait for ports of call (or don’t have international data on your phone), it might be worthwhile to pay for a Wi-Fi package.

Can I use my unlimited data on a cruise ship?

Rates for roaming on ships are determined by your home carrier. Please note that calls to 800, 888, 866, and 877 numbers are not toll free. You will be billed by your home carrier for your international roaming usage on your regular mobile phone bill. Typically charges will appear on the next monthly bill, but depending on your carrier it may occasionally take up to 60 days for charges to appear on your phone bill. Please note that most cell phone carriers do not allow their unlimited rate plans to apply to cellular calls, texts or data used while onboard ships. Please contact your own carrier to confirm this and your specific pricing details.

Service is provided by Wireless Maritime Services. Use of the WMS services requires compatible wireless phone and qualified wireless service with a home carrier provider that has a roaming agreement with WMS. Your home network will determine the international roaming rates you pay for usage.

WMS provides CDMA, GSM voice and DATA services. Other service features may not be available. Voice usage is measured during the time you are connected to your system, which is approximately from the time you press the button that initiates or answers the call until approximately the time the first party terminates the call. Voice usage for each call is billed in full minute increments with partial minutes rounded up to the next full minute. Data usage for each billing record will be rounded up to the next kilobyte and a cost will be associated with each billing record and rounded to the nearest cent.

How does the internet work in a cruise ship?

Internet access at sea is much slower and less reliable than on land. Cruise ship internet access works by sending a signal 22,000 miles to a satellite, then 22,000 miles again back to earth. This limits what applications can be used. Generally, high-data applications, such as video and VOIP services do not work.
