Is Sailing To Bermuda Safe?

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that travelers avoid all travel to Bermuda due to the high COVID-19 risk as of December 29, 2020. Before departing from your port of origin, Bermuda Radio requests all vessels to complete a pre-arrival safety float plan. Upon approach to Bermuda, visiting yachts must contact Bermuda Radio on Marine VHF Ch16, who will guide them into St. Georges. A voyage to Bermuda can be rewarding and relaxing, provided that you plan your voyage carefully and check and prepare your vessel adequately. It is always advisable to contact the Bermuda Maritime Operations Center (formerly Bermuda Harbor Radio) before starting your voyage for Bermuda and provide information.

April is considered the best month to cruise to and visit Bermuda, as the weather warms into the 70s and it’s a festive time with the Easter holiday and other exciting events taking place. However, sailing to Bermuda in winter months is only for daredevils, as measles cases are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure or have not had measles in the past.

Bermuda has taken safety seriously since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and has emerged as an extremely safe place for travelers to visit in 2020. Exercise normal precautions in Bermuda and follow Bermuda’s guidelines for entry and exit. Onshore, sailors can expect about three days out and up to 200 nautical miles. In general, Bermuda is very safe, with areas with a concentration of nightlife and bars.
