Is It Safe To Snorkel In The Florida Keys?

Bahia Honda Key is a tropical state park known for its deep bay and excellent snorkeling opportunities. The bay offers shallow depths of six feet, making it an ideal spot to spot stone crabs, spiny lobster, soft corals, sponges, and various tropical fish. The Alligator Reef is also a top destination for snorkeling.

Key West’s water clarity and calm conditions contribute to the safety of snorkeling, with visibility up to 100 feet on clear days. Snorkeling in the Florida Keys is generally safe, with people returning to boats in the same condition as when they left. However, fire coral cuts or stings are common injuries during snorkeling. Fire coral is not a true coral and can be found near bridges or pilings, so it is important to take precautions.

Snorkeling in the Florida Keys is safe for all ages, but it is best done on sunny days for better photos. Light underwater dims quickly, and there is virtually no beach or shore access snorkeling. There are some dangers to be aware of while snorkeling in the Florida Keys, such as fire coral, Key Largo, Looe Key, and the Key West area. Coffin Patch and Sombrero are also popular spots for snorkeling.
