Is Cineplex Home To Landmark Cinemas?

Landmark Cinema of Canada Inc. is a Canadian cinema chain based in Calgary, Alberta, that operates 36 theatres with 299 screens, primarily in Ontario and western Canada. Its holdings include much of the former Empire Theatres chain, acquired in late 2013, and some Famous Players locations divested as part of that chain’s purchase by Kinepolis Group NV, Belgium. Acquired in December 2017 for $123 million, Landmark is Canada’s second-largest motion picture theatre exhibition company. The company has been operating for 52 years and continues to expand its operations across the country with its recent opening in Regina and two more theatre sites.

Landmark Cinemas’ first major expansion took place in 1984 when it purchased most of the Alberta and British Columbia assets of Canadian Odeon Theatres as part of that chain’s. As part of this transaction, Landmark added 22 theatres and 227 screens to its portfolio, bringing its total theatres and screens to 53 and 352 respectively. The addition of Landmark’s Western Canada screens brings Cineplex Media’s total representation to 2,361 screens, Canada’s only national coast-to-coast cinema.

Landmark Cinemas offers a variety of movie options, including matinées and snack bars, which are 10 to 15 cheaper with bigger screens. The company’s acquisition by Kinepolis Group in 2017 further solidified its position as Canada’s second-largest cinema chain after Cineplex.
