This article focuses on the basics of windsurfing upwind, including understanding the Points of Sail and the No Go Zone. Upwind windsurfing is a technique that allows sailboarders to navigate towards where the wind is coming from. To sail upwind, one must understand the direction of the wind and use the upwind technique. There are three main types of windsurfing boards: freeride, freestyle, and wave. Freeride boards are versatile and suitable for beginners and intermediate riders.
To sail into the wind while windsurfing, lean back, steer the board slightly off the wind, and position the board correctly. The Windjammers booklet provides a basic introduction to windsurfing. To stand on your board, maintain your shoulder, pelvis, and front ankle in one line. Your board must be pointing across the water.
There are two basic ways of sailing downwind: on a broad reach or a run. The broad reach is the easiest and most stable point of sail when learning to sail with the wind coming. With a rudder or fin in the water, you can use the wind coming at you from one side and the water pushing against you on the other to shoot out.
To steer a windsurfing board, find a comfortable body of water, unfold the centerboard, phaul your sail, and get your hands close together and your arms together. Windsurfing is a sport that balances aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces. Before taking the downwind (running) sail position, be on a broad reach. Remember to read the Steering section before turning on the board.
