James Blackman’s masterclass at Divers Ready focuses on improving finning techniques for scuba diving. He recommends using fins with short or elliptical blades, as they are more efficient and reduce energy use. One of the best finning techniques is reversing backwards without turning your whole body. To do this, stand with your partner, pass one fin and put on the other by crossing one leg over the knee, using the opposite hand to the opposite foot. Move fins apart slowly and horizontally in an opposing back and forth motion while rotating them. Fins are suitable for swimming, snorkeling, free diving, and body surfing. For scuba diving, fins are preferred as they provide more comfort. The motion requires slow, slow kicking with legs, primarily using bigger leg muscles.
