This type of stress buckling can happen on just about any type of flat sheet metal including aluminum, steel, and copper. Oil canning is usually noticeable prior to construction, and can appear more prominent when sunlight or other lighting reflects off the irregular metal surface.

What causes oil canning?Oil canning’s wavy appearance is caused by stress on the metal and inherent to the metal. Metal stress can happen at any time during the milling process when the metal is rolled from its coil form, and while slitting and forming during panel fabrication. Additional stresses can occur during assembly at the fastening points as sheet metal is formed into wall or roof panels; if the structure is moved or sheet metal panels conform due to settling; due to intentional camber or bowing; or if improperly installed. Thermal expansion during the rolling process or from direct sunlight can also cause oil canning.

Can oil canning be prevented?While it’susually more of an aesthetic concern than a structural one, prevention is still better than the cure when it comes to oil canning.Careful consideration should be given to choice of metal, production, and project type in order to minimize unsightly oil canning. Coil fabricators and sheet metal manufacturers try to minimize oil canning during metal fabrication. During tension leveling, if metal is stretched beyond it’s yield point it creates a flatter surface less prone to oil canning. Panel design and finish should also be taken into consideration when trying to minimize oil canning. For example, visible oil canning may be less noticeable on lighter colored exterior metal panels. Using fasteners that allow for expansion, using backer rods and shimming materials, or using ribbed panelscan also help relieve stress on assembled exterior panels, as well as minimize visible oil canning.

Have you ever seen a metal roof that looked like it was wrinkled? If you have, then you witnessed one of the biggest wonders of the metal roofing world, known as oil canning.

If any professional, such as an installer or manufacturerguarantees that your metal roofing or wall panelwill never have oil canning, run fast and far in the other direction. Unfortunately, that’s not true and you should look for a seller that won’t make a false guarantee.

The truth is: oil canningwill occur in metal, as it’s inherent in the product itself. However, there are measures you can take to help minimize and disguise its appearance.

First, we’ll look at the less serious issue, oil-canning. Go to the furnace and listen carefully at different places, to see if the banging is coming from some place in the duct. The ducts expand and contract as the blower turns off and on. This could be a sign of undersized ducts, closed vents, flimsy ducts, or a clogged air filter. In most homes, ducts are composed of 24-26 gauge sheet metal that’s made into one of three distinct shapes: circular, square and rectangular. The shape of the ductwork has a direct effect on the amount of pressure the ducts can take before they need to expand. Round ductwork can handle the most pressure, and rectangular can take the least. Once ductwork reaches its maximum pressure, it will expand and make a popping sound. This is what we refer to as oil-canning. This pop isn’t indicative of an issue with the furnace itself. Instead, it means that your ductwork needs to expand before it’s able to handle the air pressure produced by the furnace.

If your duct is oil-canning, it likely has a weak spot and needs support. You can easily fix this oil-canning by screwing a slightly thicker piece of metal across and onto the spot. Though it may sound silly, you could even whack that spot with something to dent it in, though I don’t recommend this being your first choice.

If this isn’t the case, you might try ruling out another less common but more serious issue, the roll-out. This involves a little explosion when the furnace starts up, or a burst of flame bigger than it needs to be. To see if banging is caused by a gas ignition problem, watch the furnace as it starts up. Leave the doors on the furnace so that you aren’t affecting the observation. If you can see into the furnace doors, you should be able to see what is happening. If not, listen, to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Watch to see if the doors on the furnace shake at all. If so, then try again with the door to the burner compartment open, to see if the banging still happens and if you can see what happens when it does.

If you see extra flame or shaking associated with your noise, the good news is that you’ve identified a potentially dangerous problem in your home and can now correct it. The bad news is this is about where your DIY exploration of the problem should end. The case of a roll-out should be followed by contacting a professional Austin heating technician, as messing with the gas components of a furnace is not recommended for those without the tools and knowledge of a trained professional.

Choose the Right Panel Design. As you can see in the above images, different panel profiles are more prone to oil canning. Waviness or stress wrinkling is more obvious on flat and ribbed panels, while striated panels hide it much more effectively. With a striated panel, you also get the added bonuses of architectural appeal and extra strength.

A.Oil cans are caused by an imbalance of forces in a panel. I’m pretty certain that in your case the damaged area is overstretched, and it can be repaired by carefully using a heat-shrinking procedure. This can be done with an oxyacetylene torch, a shrinking disk, or by using a stud gun with a shrinking attachment.

To do torch shrinking, heat a dime-sized (or smaller) portion of the metal until it turns a visible color, then, while the metal is still hot, carefully hammer off-dolly on the hot spot. DO NOT QUENCH the metal, since that will harden it, and make further work more difficult. The hotter you get the metal, the more it will shrink. The metal doesn’t have to turn red for this to work — blue, or “straw” colors can be effective for gentle shrinking, too.

On oil cans the size of my palm, I usually make the first shrink in the center, and then spiral out toward the edge if more shrinking is required. For larger oil cans, I usually start near the outer edge, and then work toward the center.

The colour of the metal will also alter the visibility of oil canning with lighter colours reducing visibility and darker colours accentuating the flaws.
